He was born August 23, or 24, 1763. He enlisted while living in York District, South Carolina, in 1780 or 1781, and served until July, 1783, with South Carolina troops under Captains Henry White and Jacob Barnett and Lieutenant Colonels Henry White and Jacob Barnett in Colonel Henry Hampton's regiment of Light Dragoons and also under Colonels Mann and Kimball. He moved from South Carolina about 1812 to Lincoln County, Tennessee, where he died November 2, 1853. He married in York District, South Carolina, in the fall of 1788, Elizabeth ___. She survived him and was allowed pension on her application made in Lincoln County, October, 1854, when she was 86 years of age. Joseph, the first child of Ralph and Elizabeth Smith, was born October 10, 1790. They also had the following children: Margaret, Nancy, Thomas, James, Elizabeth, Ralph and John (twins), Susannah and Jonathan.
