He said that he was formerly of Washingon County, Tennessee, and also formerly of Kentucky. He was born May 20, 1757, in Spottsylvania County, Virginia. He enlisted in Caroline County, Virginia, in 1776 and served in Captains Howes and Sanford's companies, Colonel Spotswoods' Virginia regiment. He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and was discharged in March, 1778, at Valley Forge. He married March 21, 1733, in Washington County, Virginia, Esther Buchanan. She was born June 1, 1765 and was the daughter of Robert and Mary Buchanan. Jesse Woodruff died October is, 1826, in Lincoln County. His widow applied for pension in 1840 and was living in 1848. In her pension application she referred to the following children: Mary, born 1784; Susana, born 1786; William B., born 1790; Nancy born 1797; Martha, born 1799; and Eliza, born 1805.
