M. K. Harwell and Eld. James Sanders. On Friday morning the 7th grade rendered a program in observance of the week. * * * Youth Fellowship Program The District Youths Fellowship of the Methodist Churches met with the local group Sunday evening, of which Mrs. Varda Sorrells is director. An outstanding program was presented, including several musical numbers directed by Miss Edith Dysart. Between 75 and 100 young people from the district were in attendance. The local group served tea and sandwiches after the program. * * * W. S. C. S. Meets for Study The WSCS met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. R. K. Morgan Sr., for the Methodist mission study. * * * Research Club Mesdames J. M. Greer and C. M. Crawford were joint hostesses to the Research Club Monday afternoon at the home of the former. The house was beautified with gift bouquets of the season's flowers. Mrs. W. S. Joplin, vice-president, presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. S. H. Allen. The Program subject was Fine Arts. Papers on the program subject prepared by Mesdames S. H. Allen and Jepp Collier were read by Mrs. H. B. Whitaker and T. L. Warren respectively. Two songs were sung by the club, accompanied by Mrs. J. D. Eakin at the piano. A round table report from the members attending the 5th district meeting of the Federation of Women's clubs at Tullahoma was an interesting number on the program. Attractive salad plates carrying out the Thanksgiving motif were served. Special club guests of the afternoon were Mrs. H. B. Marsh and Mrs. J. D. Eakin. * * * Rook Club Mrs. R. K. Morgan, Sr., was hostess to her rook club Thursday afternoon at the apartment. Gift flowers were used effectively in the decorations for the party. The game was played at two tables. Mrs. Boone Moore was a special guest. The hostess served delicious salad plates after the game. * * * Personals Mrs. Horace Simmons underwent an operation at a Lewisburg hospital last week. Mrs. S. H. Allen left Thursday for a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Claude Greer and family of Union City. Mrs. George Stephenson spent last week with her mother, Mrs. D. B. Clayton of Lewisburg, and her mother is with her this week. Among those from here attending the Alabama-Vanderbilt game at Nashville Saturday were; J. L. Scott, Alwyn Hart, R. K. Morgan, Alice Morgan, and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Keimig. Misses Sara and Mary Loyd of Nashville were guests Sunday of Mrs. J. M. Greer and Mrs. Clara Edmiston. Mr. and Mrs. Alva Conder were in Nashville Friday. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Couch of Knoxville were with relatives for the weekend. James Rhodes of Oak Ridge spent the weekend here with his family. Mrs. Fred Montgomery has returned to her home at Oak Ridge after a visit to her mother, Mrs. G. C. Hart. Mrs. William Conaway and Mrs. Horace Bartlett and her mother, visited here last week. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bryant have arrived from Akron for a visit to relatives here. Mahlon Scott has received a discharge from the army and is home with his mother, Mrs. Ada Scott. Walter Smith of Nashville spent the weekend here with his family. Mrs. V. A. Scott is in the Lincoln County hospital for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Quimby of Alabama visited their son at Morgan School Sunday. Mrs. Mark Whitaker of near Fayetteville spent the weekend here with the family of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Whitaker. Ward Pigg is ill of pneumonia at a Lewisburg hospital. Friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Johnson, now of Pascagoula, Miss., but formerly of Petersburg, have received announcement of the birth of a son, Larry Johnson. Henry Bolles is reported quite ill. Mrs. Wert Gillespie and Miss Elizabeth McCauley of Nashville were guests Sunday of Miss Clara Edmiston and Mrs. J. M. Greer. Miss Eva Land is attending synod of the C. P. Church at Cowan this week. Mr. and Mrs. John Culbertson of Farmington and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Wright of Pulaski were among those attending the Morgan-TMI game here. Mrs. Sam Owens and Miss Irene Owens spent the weekend in Nashville. Joe Weaver visited his son, J. B. Weaver and family of Decherd, also his sister, Mrs. Cora Tanksley of Tullahoma and was accompanied home by Mrs. J. B. Weaver. Mrs. Tony Plaza returned from a Lewisburg hospital Sunday and is convalescing. Relatives of Miss Frances George have been notified that she has arrived in California after serving with the U. S. Armed forces in Italy. Miss George left with the Vanderbilt unit. The Rev. D. B. Smith, Clerk of Elk Presbytery of the C. P. Church left Tuesday morning to attend a two-day session of synod at Cowan. OBITUARIES Alexander Prayer services for Mrs. Florence Smith Alexander, aged 70 years, wife of Eld. J. B. Alexander, who died at her home Friday, after a lingering illness of complications, were held at the Beasley Funeral Home Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., by Rev. T. E. Nelson. Funeral services were held in Dunlap, Tennessee, at 1:30 p.m. She is survived by her husband, three sisters, and one brother. Burial in Dunlap, Tennessee. Lincoln County News - November 14, 1940 Anderson Jeff Anderson, 64 years old, farmer of the Petersburg community, overcome by monoxide gas fumes while repairing his automobile on January 23, died at his home at 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Anderson was blinded by the gas, and had been in an unconscious condition since the fumes affected him. Double pneumonia developed Friday night to hasten his death. Funeral services were conducted by the Reverend Coffman of Lawrenceburg and Eld. B. F. Hart from the Cane Creek Church of Christ at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Anderson, son of the late ------- and Margaret Wiseman Anderson, was reared near Lynchburg. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. ------- Clay Anderson; two daughters, Miss Audie Lee Anderson, Petersburg, and Mrs. Clement Barnes, of Louisville; two sons, Gaston C. Lincoln County News - February 6, 1936 Armstrong Funeral services for Andy Armstrong, aged 67 years, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ben Williamson, near Petersburg, Monday night after a brief illness of complications, were held Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. H. J. Burroughs. Burial was in Old Orchard Cemetery. Surviving are two sons, James and Dick Armstrong; and three daughters, Mrs. Ben Williamson, Mrs. Walter Swing, and Mrs. Virgil Scott, near Petersburg; one brother, Jim Armstrong, of Bellville, and sister, Mrs. W. S. Stone, of near Bellville. Several grandchildren also survive. Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Armstrong, aged 61 years, who died at his home in Belfast Friday night, after a lengthy illness, were held at the Head Springs Church Saturday, by Rev. H. B. Blakely. Lincoln County News - November 14, 1940 Armstrong Mrs. Jim Armstrong, aged 52 years, died at her home several miles west of Petersburg Thursday of influenza, followed by double pneumonia. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Rev. H. J. Burroughs, assisted by Rev. Walter Crawford, conducted the funeral Friday at 1:00 o'clock. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Fred Scott, and two sons, Jim and Bryant. Burial was at Old Orchard Cemetery. Lincoln County News - January 5, 1933 Arnold Funeral services for Edith Arnold, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Arnold, who died Friday night after a short illness, were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church at McBurg. She is survived by her parents and four sisters, Misses Lurlean, Opaline, Christine, and Jane Arnold; her grandparents, several uncles and aunts. Burial at the Wright Cemetery. Lincoln County News - July 20, 1939 Barham Funeral services for Charlie Barham, aged 63 years, who died at his home near Hannah's Gap after a few days illness of pneumonia, were held at the Hannah's Gap Church by Rev. H. A. Russell. He is survived by his wife and one son, Alva E. Barham, of Petersburg. Burial at Old Orchard Cemetery. Lincoln County News - May 22, 1941 Barham Mrs. Cora Walker Barham, wife of the late T. J. Barham, died at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, on her sixty-first birthday, following a cerebral hemorrhage suffered at 3:00 p.m. She was seemingly in her usual state of health, having attended a funeral at 1:00 p.m., and was engaged in Christmas shopping at the time she was stricken. The daughter of the late Eld. E. W. Walker, Primitive Baptist minister, she was reared in the Mulberry community and was a member of the Buckeye Primitive Baptist Church for many years. Her Godly life and Christian influence will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Though of an unassuming nature, she went about doing good. Her presence will be greatly missed at Mt. Olivet Church, where she was a regular attendant and was so faithful in her contributions, both of her services and means. She was endeared to a wide circle of friends at Petersburg, where she had resided all of her married life, and was active in civic affairs. Funeral services were held at the Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Eld. W. A. Pinkstaff in charge, assisted by Rev. D. B. Smith. Burial was in Old Orchard Cemetery by her husband and son, who preceded her in death several years. Surviving her is an only son, Aubrey Barham, of Nashville, a stepson, Quint Barham, of Petersburg, two step-grandsons, Paul Barham, of Petersburg, Frank Barham, of the U. S. Navy, a sister, Miss Ina Walker, of Mulberry, and brothers, J. M. Walker, of Mulberry, and Eb Walker, of Chattanooga. Lincoln County News - December 15, 1938 Barham Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel Barnett Barham, 63, widow of Charlie Eugene Barham, who died late Thursday afternoon in a Marshall County hospital, after a brief illness, were conducted Friday afternoon at the Hannah's Gap Baptist Church, by Rev. H. A. Russell of Murfreesboro, and Rev. S. O. McAdoo. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Barnett, she was born and reared in Bedford County. Lincoln County News - July 29, 1943 Bedwell Funeral services for Emmett Berry Bedwell, aged 44 years, were held at the Chestnut Ridge Church of Christ Friday, at 2:00 p.m., by Eld. C. C. McQuiddy. Death occurred from heart trouble at the home of his mother, Mrs. L. P. Harned, at Bellville. Mr. Bedwell was formerly a resident, of Newell, West Va., where he was employed by the Homer Laughlin China Company. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. E. B. Bedwell; two brothers, Everett, and Judgielee; five daughters, Evelyn, Ruth, Thelma, Elsie and Marelle; and one son, Emmett, Jr., all of Bellville. Burial in the Old Orchard Cemetery at Petersburg. She was the daughter of the late Julia Ann Davidson and Robert G. Blacknall. She was born and reared near Petersburg, She is survived by one brother, Charlie Blacknall, of McAllen, Texas; one half-brother, Jim Wakefield, of Nashville; two daughters, Miss Bertie Bills and Mrs. Albert Hill, of Petersburg, and one granddaughter, Miss Ruth Bills. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jim Harvey, of Huntsville; Mrs. Callie Benson, of Scottsboro, Miss Sallie Blacksher, of Petersburg; and Mrs. Oscar Davis; two sons, Newsom and Robert Blacksher, of Petersburg; a sister, Mrs. Jesse Muse, of Flat Creek. Blakemore, 76, who died at his home near here Tuesday afternoon after a lengthy illness, were held at 4:00 p.m. at the residence with Rev. S. O. McAdoo and Prof. R. K. Morgan officiating. A son of the late William and Nancy Crunk Blakemore, Mr. Blakemore had always lived in this community and for forty years was an employee of the W. H. Marsh Company. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Clemmie O'Neal Blakemore; one sister, Mrs. Walter Delffs, of Shelbyville; several nieces and nephews, including Lt. Col. Raymond C. Scoggins Bradford, 50, wife of Walter Bradford, who died Wednesday in a Marshall County hospital following a lingering illness, were held Thursday morning at the Medium Methodist Church in Delina, by Rev. M. K. Harwell. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Scoggins, Mrs. Bradford was a native of this community. She was a member of the Medium Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two daughters, Misses Katherine and Marie Bradford, of Delina and two sons, Thomas Bradford, of Delina and John Bradford, of the U. S. Navy. Lincoln County News - September 13, 1945 Brown Funeral services for Mrs. Melissa Cheek Brown, aged 80 years, who died Tuesday afternoon, at the home of her son, Benny Brown, near here, were conducted Wednesday at the Ostella Church of Christ by Eld. H. M. Phillips. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Cheek, and has lived most of her life in this community. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Besides her son, she is survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Burial was in Spring Place Cemetery. Lincoln County News - August 20, 1942 Bryant Funeral services for Mrs. Callie Sanders Bryant, 72, wife of Rufus Bryant, of the Blakeville community, who died at her home early Saturday morning after a lingering illness, were held Sunday at the C. P. Church at Howell by Rev. H. J. Burroughs. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Colyar Barnes, of Howell; eight sons, Sam Bryant, of California; Earl Bryant, of Bidwell; Thomas Bryant, of Petersburg; Bank Bryant, of Mimosa; Bill Bryant, of Bellview; Hubert and Carl Bryant, of Akron, Ohio; Mike Bryant, of Howell; twenty-six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Lincoln County News - November 16, 1939 Butler A message has been received by the wife, Mrs. Laura Dodson, of the death in Tokyo, Japan on October 25, of Howard Ernest Butler. The circumstances of his death were not obtained. He had been serving with the armed forces for quite a while, but spent a furlough with his family here this summer. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three small children, Barbara Ann, Larry Howard and Marilyn Butler, and a brother, Wyatt Butler, of Petersburg; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dwight Butler, of Ostella. Lincoln County News - November 8, 1945 Butler Prayer services for Walter Butler, 58, who died at his home Sunday at 12:00 p.m., after several months illness, were conducted Monday at 9:30 a.m., at the Beasley Funeral Home, by Eld. James Sanders, after which the body was shipped to Clarendon, Texas, his former home. About nine months ago he came to Petersburg and purchased the Hugh Moore farm. He was born in this county but went to Texas when a small boy and lived there until recently. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons. Services and burial will take place in Clarendon Wednesday. Lincoln County News - July 27, 1939 Caldwell Funeral services for Mrs. Will A. Caldwell, aged 80 years, who died at her home early Monday morning, after complications, will be held Tuesday, by Rev. H. J. Burroughs. She is survived by her husband and two children. Burial in the Boonshill Cemetery. Lincoln County News - May 8, 1941 Callahan Services were held at Head Springs Sunday by Rev. W. H. Moss and Eld. Jim Sanders for Mr. Jim Callahan, who was near 90 years of age and who died Saturday. Survivors are his wife, who was the former Mrs. Rose Dodd Brewer, and five daughters. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Burial was in Head Spring Cemetery. Lincoln County News - April 25, 1940 Cheeves Funeral services for Miss Delma Cheeves, 15, daughter of Mrs. Ann Hemphill Cheeves Mullins, who died at her home Sunday night after a few days illness, were held Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m., at the Gatlin Cemetery near Ardmore, by Rev. Steadman. She was a member of the eighth grade class of the elementary school. She is survived by her mother, a step-father, Moon Mullins; four half-brothers, Kenneth Ray Mullins and J. B. Mullins, of Pensacola, Florida, Clemmie Mullins, of California, and Muchris, of Camp Reynolds, Mississippi. Burial at Gatlin Cemetery. Lincoln County News - March 28, 1940 Cole Funeral services for Will Cole, aged 57 years, who was found dead in bed at the home of his brother, Ollie Cole, were held at the Beasley Funeral Home, Friday, by Eld. Lincoln County News - May 1, 1941 Conder Funeral services for Mrs. Nannie Hastings Conder, aged 83 years, who died at her home Wednesday after a brief illness, were held Thursday, at 11:00 a.m., at the Beasley Funeral Home by Prof. R. K. Morgan, assisted by Eld. J. W. Sanders. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Ann Hastings, and was born and reared near here. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She had been a widow twenty-seven years. Her husband, Johnny Conder, having passed away twenty-seven years ago. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bud Tate, of Shelbyville; three sons, George Conder, of Shelbyville; Alva and Ross Conder, of Petersburg, and six grandchildren. Burial at Old Orchard Cemetery. Lincoln County News - March 18, 1943 Connell Mrs. Clay Connell died at her home at Ostella Saturday night [December 1924] as the result of a hog biting her on the finger. She was about 50 years of age and a member of the Christian Church. Funeral service was conducted at the Christian Church Sunday by Eld. B. F. Hart and Prof. R. K. Morgan. Lincoln County News - May 15, 1941 Crabtree Funeral services for Charles Crabtree, 41, who died Tuesday of a skull fracture when a lever used in stretching fence wire flew back and hit him in the head, were conducted by Rev. Mr. Crabtree was a school bus driver in addition to his farming activities. He was a World War veteran, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. Foster, aged 77, Confederate veteran, died at the Soldiers Home Sunday afternoon, at 4:00 o'clock and was buried at the home cemetery this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The Rev. O. B. Johnson conducted the services. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Tennie Brown, of Petersburg, Tenn. Mr. Foster had been an inmate of the soldiers home for twenty years. He enlisted as a Confederate soldier at the age of 15 years - Nashville Banner. Fayetteville Observer - p. 5 - c. 4 - December 3, 1925 Foster Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Wright Foster, 80, a native of Petersburg, wife of the late Rev. J. W. Mrs. Foster was a member of the Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which her husband served as pastor for a number of years. She left Petersburg about seven months ago to make her home with her niece in Texas. Services were held at the first Baptist Church, of which she was an active member, and where she began teaching Sunday School at the age of fourteen, and continued until illness prevented. Lincoln County News - May 16, 1940 Freeman Mr. Roy N. Freeman, aged 37 years, died at the hospital following an operation for gall stones, at 1:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, March 16, 1925. He was a citizen of Petersburg and a more popular man did not live in that town. His death brought sorrow to a large circle of acquaintances. P. and Docia Burrow Gammill, was born and reared in and near Petersburg, but moved to Mississippi when a young man, and was for many years pastor of the Church of Christ at Carrollton, Mississippi. He was nearly 76 years old, and is survived by a wife and one brother, George Gill, of Deposit, Ala. He was a member of the Methodist Church, where the funeral was conducted at 2:30 p. m. on Thursday by Prof. R. K. Morgan and the Rev. J. W. Estes. Fayetteville Observer - p. 1 - c. 6 - April 16, 1925 Gill Mr. O. F. Gill, aged 68 years, died Thursday morning at his home at Petersburg after a lingering illness. For several months Mr. Gill had suffered and was compelled to remain in his room and much of the time in bed, and for two or three days prior to his death was seriously ill. Mr. Gill was one of the best citizens in this section of the state and was, in former years a strong factor in all civic movements for good. He was a banker during the most active years of his life, being connected in various capacities with the First National Bank of Petersburg. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Church. At the time the Herald goes to press it is announced that the funeral will take place at the home at 1:30 Friday, followed by interment in the Old Orchard Cemetery. Gillespie, 19, of San Antonio, Texas, nephew of Mrs. W. S. Joplin and Mrs. H. B. Whitaker, of Petersburg, was killed in action in France on July 30. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Fran* * * M. Gillespie, of San Antonio. Lt. Gillespie received his reserve commission from Texas Military Institute before entering the University of the South at Sewanee in September, 1942. He was called to active duty in February, 1943, receiving officer training at Fort Benning, Ga., and later going to Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Lt. Gillespie has two brothers in service, Lt. Frank M. Gillespie, Jr., USNR, stationed in Washington, D. C., and Capt. James V. Gillespie, U. S. Army Air Corps, who was seriously wounded last year while on his 45th bombing mission over Sicily. Greer, who died at his home, Sunday, at 7:30 a.m., after a lengthy illness of complications, were held Monday at 2:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. T. E. Nelson, and the Rev. J. B. He is the oldest son of the Joseph H. and Mary Edmiston Greer, and the grandson of Joseph Greer, who carried the message of the victory of King's Mountain to George Washington, who was sitting in Congress at Philadelphia at that time. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was an elder of the church for a number of years and was very active in church affairs until failing health prevented his attending. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Butler Greer, to whom he had been married fifty-two years, and five sons, Joe Greer, of Jefferson City; Claude Greer, of Union City; Hugh Greer, of Detroit; and Louis and Vance Greer, of Petersburg; and one granddaughter, Julia Joplin Greer, of Union City. Lincoln County News - August 8, 1940 Hale Edward Hale, aged 5 years, who suffered a crushed skull when he with several others in a car driven by Raymond Darnell, were thrown from the machine into Cane Creek, Sunday afternoon as it skidded in loose gravel, died Tuesday at Lincoln County Hospital. The accident occurred near Petersburg, where the child's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Hale reside. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday at Hazel Green, Ala., with burial there. Besides his parents, the child is survived by two brothers, Charles and K. M. Hale. Burial at the Talley Cemetery. Lincoln County News - December 10, 1942 Hanaway Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Lancaster Hanaway, aged 65 years, wife of J. D. Hanaway, who died at a Nashville hospital Friday, at 2:00 p.m., after several weeks of illness, were held Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m., at the home by Rev. S. O. McAdoo, assisted by the Rev. M. K. Harwell. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was the daughter of the late Alex and Mollie Dixon Lancaster, and was born and reared near here. She will be missed. She was kind, thoughtful and always helping those who were less fortunate than she. She always grew lovely flowers, which she shared with others. Lincoln County News - December 10, 1942 Harkins Funeral services for Mrs. Donia Simmons Harkins, aged 90 years, widow of Thomas Marion Harkins, who died late Saturday might, March 28, at her home near Petersburg after a lengthy illness, were conducted at the residence Tuesday afternoon by Eld. Allen Shaddy. Mrs. Harkins was a member of the Church of Christ and had lived her entire life in the Petersburg community. Surviving are two sons, Robert P. Harkins, of Petersburg, and Thomas Eugene Harkins, of Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Ozell Redd, of St. Petersburg, Florida; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Lincoln County News - May 22, 1941 Hathaway Funeral services for Mrs. Mollie fishback Hathaway, aged 81 years, who died at her home near here Thursday, at 12:30 p.m., were held Friday at 2:30 p.m., at the Methodist Church, by Rev. N. B. Tucker, and Prof. L. I. Mills, of Shelbyville. A daughter of the late John and Althea Moore fishback, Mrs. Hathaway was born and reared in the same house where she died. Lincoln County News - November 12, 1942 Hawkins Leonard Hawkins, aged 24 years, died Tuesday night, January 25, at his home in the Blakeville community near Petersburg. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Church of Christ at Petersburg, conducted by Eld. J. N. Snell. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Edith Hensley Hawkins, and a son; a sister, Mrs. Raymond Whorley, and a brother, Paul Hawkins, all of Petersburg. Burial was in Old Orchard Cemetery. Lincoln County News - February 3, 1938 Haynes Mr. James N. Haynes died of heart trouble at his home near Petersburg at 6:00 o'clock Friday, June 12, 1925. He was nearly 90 years of age. Lincoln County News - February 5, 1942 Hill Services for Mrs. Fannie Adams Hill, 84, widow of Lemuel Hill, who died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter Mrs. Clifton Woodard, near Pleasant Grove, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Liberty Valley Church of Christ, by M. R. Woodruff. A daughter of the late Jim and Catherine Woodard Adams, Mrs. Hill was a native of this county and was a member of the Church of Christ. Lincoln County News - July 19, 1945 Hillis Funeral services for C. H. Hillis, aged 57 years, who was instantly killed two miles from Fayetteville on the Petersburg Highway, Monday night at 9:30 p.m., when his car ran into a milk truck, driven by J. B. Jobe, of Delina, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Minor Hill Church of Christ, near Pulaski, by the Eld. Elmer Smith of Pulaski. Mr. Hillis had been to Fayetteville and was returning here when the accident occurred. Lincoln County News - July 4, 1940 Howell Arthur Guy "Buddy" Howell died unexpectedly at his home at 411 W. 15th St., Columbia, Saturday morning, October 13, 1945, at 5:00 a.m. Prayer services were conducted at the home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday with the funeral service at the Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. W. S. Marshall. He was born and reared in Nashville, the son of Mrs. Eve Whitfield Howell and the late James Howell. He came to Columbia from Lewisburg seven years ago and was associated with the C. B. Ragland Grocery Company, as a salesman. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Fannie Scott Howell; one daughter Mrs. Bob Massey, of Lewisburg; his mother, Mrs. Howell, of Nashville; five sisters, Mrs. Oscar Lovell, of Centerville, Mrs. Julian Luther and Mrs. John C. Burdett, of Nashville, and Mrs. Will Stewart and Mrs. Claude Jones, of White Bluff; and two brothers Ned and James Howell, of Nashville. Mr. Howell was for many years a resident of the Petersburg community, where his daughter graduated from Morgan school. He has many friends here who will deplore his passing. Lincoln County News - October 18, 1945 Humbles Funeral services for Mrs. Joyce Luna Humbles, aged 68 years, widow of Jim Humbles, who died Monday afternoon at the home of a daughter near Petersburg, after a brief illness, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Cane Creek Church of Christ by Eld. J. W. Sanders. Mrs. Humbles, daughter of the late William and Lizzie Talley Luna, had lived her entire life in that community and for many years was a member of the Church of Christ. Stovall, Tom Bacon, Elizabeth Loyd Luna and Wilma Ayers; one son, Buddy Humbles; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery. Lincoln County News - September 26, 1940 Hunter Mrs. Jennie Gibson Hunter, aged 78 years, died early Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack Cummings, at Petersburg, following a heart attack. Mrs. Hunter was a member of the Methodist Church, and a native of Lincoln County. She had spent the greater part of her life at Howell. Her husband, Sam Hunter, died many years ago. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. W. E. Cowser and the Rev. R. S. Brown, both of Petersburg, and Mayor Jim McCord, of Lewisburg. Burial was in the Delina Cemetery. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack Cummings, of Petersburg, and Mrs. J. L. Adams, of Tuscola, Texas; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Lincoln County News - October 24, 1935 King Word was received here early Sunday morning of the death of Mr. Ewell King, son of Mr. Will King, and the late Mrs. King. His death came Sunday at 2:00 a.m., at his home in North Carolina, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife and two children, his father, three sisters, Mrs. J. O. Jones, Mrs. Neil Green, and Mrs. Lelia Cheatham, of Lebanon; three brothers, Holt King, of Petersburg; Guy King, of Cornersville; and Chester King, of Columbia; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Burial was at his home Monday. Lincoln County News - August 15, 1940 King Fred Clark King, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. King of Petersburg, was fatally injured Friday morning at 10:00 p.m. when the telephone pole on which he was working broke off at the ground and fell crushing his body which was belted to the pole. The accident occurred at Spring Hill where a telephone crew of about ten men had been replacing wire. A member of the crew stated that King had released two wires but when he started the brackets the pole gave way. He was seen reaching to release his safety belt but was unsuccessful, fellow workers said. He was rushed to the hospital at Columbia, where he died about 11:00 a.m. Surviving besides his parents are his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Jones of Petersburg, with whom he made his home, three brothers, Jack, Billy, and Edgar, and two sisters, Alberta and Glendon King. Lincoln County News - October 8, 1936 King Funeral services for W. A. King, 90, who died late Wednesday evening, May 23, at the home of his daughter, after a lengthy illness, were conducted Friday at the residence by Rev. W. M. Crawford, of Smithland, and L. I. Leftwich, 59, who was found dead in bed early Monday morning at her home east of Petersburg near Chestnut Ridge, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Hannah's Gap Baptist Church by Rev. J. V. Rich. She apparently had been dead from four to six hours when found by her husband. Lincoln County News - January 12, 1939 Luna Mrs. Lucy Luna died Sunday of a complication of diseases at the home of her sister, Mrs. Addie Culbertson, in Brownwood, Texas. She was a member of the Baptist Church and 73 years old, and is survived by one brother, Bob Andrews. Her remains will be brought here today to the home of her nephew J. E. Luna, and she will be buried Wednesday. He had been in ill health for some time. He is the son of John B. Luna and Margaret Vaughn Luna. He moved to Texas about thirty years ago. Services were held Saturday afternoon. His wife preceded him to the grave last year. His mother, Mrs. Mag Luna passed away March 30. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Rives; two grandchildren, Marie and Eb Willis Rives; five sisters, Mrs. George Fowler, Mrs. Walter Broadway, Mrs. Oliver Talley, Mrs. Kate Pylant, of Petersburg, and Mrs. Johnny White, of California; and one brother, Buford Luna, of Petersburg. Lincoln County News - June 13, 1940 Luna J. Ernest Luna, 60, president of the Citizens Bank and prominent business man of Petersburg was found shot in the rear of the hardware store, where he worked, Tuesday morning. The body was discovered by S. H. Allen, proprietor of the hardware store, when he went to the store at 7:00 o'clock. Mr. Luna had been employed in the store for many years. He had served as president of the bank for the past several years. He was a member of the Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sophronia Luna, and one son, Raymond Luna, of Atlanta, connected with the Georgia State Highway Department. Pinkstaff, assisted by Eld. B. F. Hart. She was a native of Franklin, Tenn., moving here soon after her marriage nearly seventy years ago. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Marsh, aged 50 years, vice-president of the first National Bank of Petersburg, and a merchant, died at a Nashville Hospital last Sunday after a three-day illness following an operation. Lincoln County News - August 20, 1936 Marsh Petersburg was saddened early Wednesday morning when word was received here that Miss Melba Marsh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh, had been accidentally killed in a car wreck in Alabama in which she and five other young people were riding ran into a truck loaded with steel, demolishing the car and injuring the young people. Funeral services for Miss Marsh, 24, were held at the Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m., by Mr. Kenneth Morgan, Mr. L. I. Mills, assisted by Rev. J. B. Alexander. McRady, aged 72 years, died of Bright's disease after a two week illness at Petersburg, Thursday, December 10, 1925. He was one of the most successful practitioners in the county and during the days of his activity had a very large and lucrative practice. He occupied a commanding position in his community and at the time of his death was president of the First National Bank of Petersburg. Fayetteville Observer - p. 5 - c. 3 - December 17, 1925 McRady Hugh McRady, 32, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. McRady, in Petersburg, on High Street, at 1:00 a.m. this morning [Thursday], following a paralytic stroke suffered Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., while on duty at the McRady-Muse Drug Store, with which he had been associated for two years. He was a popular young business man and his untimely passing been the occasion of much grief. He received his education at Morgan School and Georgia Tech in Atlanta, having graduated from the department of Civil Engineering. He followed the profession in which he specialized until succeeding his father in the drug business. He was endeared to many friends both in prep school and college. At the meeting of Morgan alumni Saturday evening he was reelected to the office of secretary, which he has held for two years. Lincoln County News - May 19, 1938 McTier Mr. Andrew McTier died of heart failure at Petersburg on Thursday afternoon. John Estes, the Methodist minister, assisted by the other local minister. For many years Mr. McTier was a traveling salesman. Lincoln County News - November 14, 1940 Morgan Professor Robert Kenneth Morgan, Sr., for 55 years a forceful and beloved educator of Middle Tennessee, died at his home in Petersburg, on Monday afternoon, July 1, at 1:30 o'clock following an illness of fourteen weeks. Professor Morgan was born in Bedford County, near Shelbyville, in 1865, the son of German Baker and Alice Holt Morgan. He received his education in the Bedford County Schools, Webb School and Vanderbilt University. Professor Morgan began his distinguished career as a teacher at Howell, in 1885. In 18??, he formed a partnership with Prof. Hal Peoples, who was at that time principal of the Mulberry School, and together they founded the Peoples & Morgan Prepatory School at Fayetteville, which later became the Morgan Prepatory School. This institution was moved in 1919 to Petersburg, where it continues, with Professor Morgan's eldest son, Prof. R. Kenneth Morgan, Jr., as headmaster. Professor Morgan known affectionally by thousands of boys who received instruction under him, as "Old Dog," met with and taught some of his Latin classes until about three months before his death. On June 4, 1894, Professor Morgan was married to Miss Myrtle Stephenson, of Howell; to this union were born five daughters and three sons. His second daughter, Mrs. Alice Morgan Murdock, preceded him to the grave several years. Professor Morgan was a life-long member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, a member of the Exchange Club and of the Chamber of Commerce. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church by his pastor, the Rev. W. E. Cowser, assisted by the Rev. J. W. Cheery, a former pastor and close friends of many years standing. Eld. R. A. Largen, a former student, paid a touching and sincere tribute to Professor Morgan on behalf of the student body and alumni. He is survived by his wife, three sons, R. She was bright and beautiful and possessed all those qualities which glorify young womanhood and make the possessor loved of every one, so that her going away brought sorrow to the entire community. She was active in civic and church affairs in her community until infirmities of age caused her retirement.
