MADISON, TN - CEMETERIES - Blair's Chapel C.M.E. Cemetery ========================================================================= David Donahue, the creator of this file, declares it to be in the public domain. ========================================================================= BLAIRS CHAPEL C.M.E. CEMETERY Madison County, Tennessee Blair's Chapel Cemetery is located near the end of Blair's Chapel Road off Steam Mill Ferry Road south of Jackson. There is an older white section, two major black sections, and a few black burials north of the white section. David Donahue recorded this cemetery November 13 and 14, 2003. Jonathan K. T. Smith recorded Blair's Chapel Cemetery in 1995. It appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Madison County, Tennessee. There is a 2000 update in Volume II. Black burials at Blair's Chapel Cemetery lies in two major sections, a western section (its older) and an eastern section separated by a kudzu-infested ravine. Kudzu is making inroads into both sections of the cemetery. There are many unmarked graves here but their exact number is difficult to estimate. In 1995 Jonathan Smith noted "judging from grave mounds and sunken graves here there are likely several hundred unmarked graves; numerous funeral home markers no longer have information on their panels." These are simply not there in 2003. The cemetery may have been gone over with a bobcat or bulldozer both to level the surface (making use of a riding mower easier) and to help control kudzu. There are shell fragments and pottery fragments scattered over large areas of the western section, suggesting that shell-covered graves and graves covered with decorated with broken dishes existed here at one time. The newer north section seems at first to lie in a large cleared area. Part of this large open area may have been bulldozed in recent years to remove trees to open more area for burials. (The white section may have been damaged severely by the clearance.) The burials in the eastern section extend 50 and more yards north and northwest into the woods. Jonathan Smith noted that Blairs Chapel C.M.E. Church was organized in 1881 but in 1971 it relocated 2 miles northwest on Steam Mill Ferry Road.
