MADISON, TN - CEMETERIES - Ebenezer Cemetery (White Section) ========================================================================= David Donahue, the creator of this file, declares it to be in the public domain. ========================================================================= EBENEZER CEMETERY (White Section) Madison County, Tennessee Ebenezer Cemetery lies near the end of Ebenezer Road, west of State Highway 138, in western Madison County. There are white and black sections. The white section of the cemetery is the former location of Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church and contains many antebellum markers. After the church moved to Mercer, the building remained for years but fell during a storm in the 1960s. It was built prior to the Civil War, and there was a balcony for the slaves to attend the services (very similar to Denmark Presbyterian Church). There was an annual reunion here as late as the 1950s. The black section of Ebenezer Cemetery, begun as a slave cemetery, lies across the access drive on the opposite slope. The white section of Ebenezer Cemetery is kept well mown and trimmed. However, the cemetery looks vandalized, and I am told it was vandalized a few years ago. Most antebellum markers are fallen and/or broken. Their fragments are often out of place and accumulated in piles. However, I do not think all the damage to the mid- 19th century markers is vandalism. Only two markers clearly suggest vandalism (the marker for James T. Mulheron and the double marker for George Gill Mulheron and Lellie Mae Mulheron). Most of the apparent damage to other markers could have happened without vandalism. The loss of antebellum markers was already underway when the cemetery was recorded in 1974. Many of the fallen and broken antebellum markers are designs in marble which are very tall in relation to their thickness. When leaning the larger of these will break under the strain of their own weight as they age and weather to calcite. When on a slope, as in this cemetery, relatively tall, thin markers are also prone to falling due to natural soil creep. If once the church annual reunions ceased, no one ever reset leaning or fallen markers, much of the breakage could be the result of driving movers over the fallen markers or striking leaning markers. From the 1950s, the loss rate would only be about 2 fallen/broken markers per year. The cemetery may soon be out of use as there were only two burials here in the 1990s. David Donahue recorded this cemetery September 14, 2003. An earlier unattributed record of this cemetery appeared in Family Findings, Vol. VI, No. 4, October 1974, pp. 158-163. This is referred to as 1974 in notes below. It was a source for matching names and dates on fragments of broken markers.
