Among those listed that he owes are Samuel Dickens, land agent who sold him the property owned by the University of North Carolina in Madison County and several other individuals, including William H. Curlin, his son. The land mortgaged lies in Section 7, Range 3 [West?]. This deed mentions his livestock mark. Land involved: [Sec. 7, Rng. 3 W?] MADISON COUNTY, TN REGISTER OF DEEDS BOOK ?, PAGE 425 - 426 16 JUN 1839 / REC. 1 AUG 1839 John Curlin to Charles Hichot Deed of Trust I John Curlin have this day bargained and sold and do hereby convey to Charles Hichot for the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid and the further consideration afore mentioned the following property to wit: One hundred acres [100 acres] of land where I now live which I purchased of Samuel Dickens adjoining the land of Abe Brown, Benj. Kirby & Alexander Gossen, one gray horse, one bay mare, (?) cows and calves marked as follows: 1 black and white cow, the other three are with marked crop and slit in right ear with an under and over (?) in the right ear no fork in the left ear. To have and to hold the same to said Hichot his heirs and assigns forever. I covenant with the said Hichot that I am lawfully seized of the property, have a good right to convey it and that the same is unencumbered; I further consent and bind myself, my heirs and ?tures to warrant and forever defend the title to the aforesaid property and every part thereof to the said Hichot his heirs and assigns against the lawful claim of all person whatsoever. But this deed is made for the following uses and trust and for me this purpose that is to say I am indebted to Samuel Dickens in the sum of one hundred and ninety one dollars and sixty eight cents [$191.68] in two judgments rendered before Charles Hichot Esquire on (?) inst. by note to M. T. Purnell in the sum of thirty five dollars & twenty two cents [$35.22] beginning date 19th Inst. on note (?) Martin Pison for seventeen dollars [$17] due (?)1838 by note to Purnell Turner & Co. for fifty eight dollars and eighty one cents [$58.81] on one day after date & dated 20 July 1838 with interest from 25 Dec. 1837 with (?) of the ten dollars [$10] dated 14 Mar. 1839 on the inst. dated 2 May 1839 for twenty eight dollars and thirty cents [$28.30] on note 19th June 1839 to Wm. H. Curlin for one hundred forty three dollars & sixty five cents [$143.65] one other note due Wm & John Curlin for twenty eight dollars & thirty eight cents [$28.38] dated 19 (?) and payable 25 Dec. next also Book(?) of ten dollars [$10] (?) Purnell Turner & Co. now of I should pay the aforesaid debts with all Int. & (?) [line obliterated].then the said Hichot as trustee after giving twenty days notice may expose the said property to public sale and sell it to the highest bidder for each one appropriate the (?) payment of said debt, expenses & dist. & pay the balance of any there be to me that is agreed by parties to this deed that the aforesaid property is to remain in the possession of the said John Curlin until called for by the said Hichot as trustee this 19 June 1839.
