LIEUTENANT JONAS CLARK



   Jonas Clark applied for revolutionary pension while living in Madison County,

Tenn., in 1832 when he was 75 years of age and therefore born in 1757. He

entered the service in North Carolina in 1779 under Captain Richard Simmons and

was sent out to intercept Colonel Cruger who was attempting to join the British

at Charleston. He was later placed under command of Capain Nathaniel Martin and

was with General Thomas Sumpter in the battle of Hanging Rock. He was in the

defeat of General Horatio Gates August 15, 1780, near Camden. General Sumter's

troops were in warfare with Lord Cornwallis' forces. Captain Martin was taken

prisoner and command of the company devolved upon Lieutenant Robert Walker.

Clark served under General Nathaniel Greene in the battle of Guilford Court

House. He was appointed lieutenant by Governor Rutledge and was attached to

Colonel William Folk's regiment in skirmishes at Friday's Fort and Orangeburg

County Court House and in the battle of Eutaw Springs.
