End this issue ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NO.35 JULY 12,1884 ================================================================ -PERSONAL--Mr.Z.N.WRIGHT left Thursday for Huntingdon,to attend the funeral of his step-mother. --Miss Rose FENNER,of Florence,Ala.,is visiting the family of her brother,Dr.FENNER,on Baltimore Street. --Miss Bessie STODGHILL,of Danville,KY.,has returned to her home Monday,after several weeks with her sister,Mrs.T.W.MURRELL. --The startling announcement last Wednesday afternoon that Dr.C.A.STILL had been killed by lightening,cast a gloom over the whole city.He was returning home from town,and when near his residence,met his death,which was instantaneous.Ther was a slight contusion on his breast and a bruise on one of his eyes which latter was probably caused by his fall.He was 76 years of age,was a native of Ky.,came to Jackson a young man,never married. End of this issue ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NO.50 OCTOBER 25,1884 ================================================================ -MARRIED--SIMMONS_DUKE.Tuesday 21st,at the residence of Col.J.H.DUKE,Mr.J.M.SIMMONS & Miss Anna DUKE, both of this city,were married. -DIED--NEELY_Of this city,on the 13th,Mrs.Lou J.NEELY,wife of Dr.M.S.NEELY. -DIED--COBB_On October 20th,of a maglignant disease of the bladder,John B.COBB,in the 75th year of his age.He was born in Franklin County,N.C.in 1810,moved to Tenn.,in 1839, and first settled in Obion County,Tenn..In 1841,he moved to Fayette County and successfully engaged in cotton planting and in a few years enlarged by investments in Ark.,and when the war broke out,had large interests in both states.The tide of the war swept away a fortune accumulated by industry and frugality.He was married twice.His first wife was Miss PETERS,and left an only child,Mrs.Lucy ARMSTRONG,of Birmingham,Ala.In 18--,he married Mrs.Mary Ann GUTHRIE,of the city,his surviving widow. -IN MEMORIUM--At the residence of K.C.HICKS,three mile north of Jackson,Thomas M.GILL,after an illness of 24 days,departed this weary life of suffering and pain October 19th,1884.He was born July 3rd,1859.He professed religion in 1873 and united in the Baptist Church at Pleasant Plains.He leaves one sister,two aunts,and a host of friends. -DEFERRED LOCALS--The residence of Mr.T.M.MERRIWETHER,in the 5th District,was destroyed by fire last Tuesday.No insurance. End of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME II NO.1 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15,1884 ================================================================ -DIED --In this city on Sunday night,November 9th,1884,Mary Bessie,daughter of S.R.& Amelia CONGER,aged about 5-years-old. -DEATH OF A YOUNG STUDENT--J.F.SCAIFE,a native of Arkansas,died at the residence of Rev.E.B.McNEIL last Wednesday.He was a student at S.W.B.University.He was buried in Riverside Cemetery. end of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME II NO.13 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 7,1885 ================================================================ -DEFERRED LOCALE--The only change in the police force was the election of Mr.T.A.HINTON in place of Mr.S.H.McALEXANDER. -A PROMINENT CITIZEN KILLS SELF--The sad death by suicide of Mr.G.F.NEILL Thursday,cast a gloom over the whole city.He had once been a prosperous merchant of our city,but was unfortunate and lost all he had,was out of employment,and in consequence,very much depressed.Mr.NEILL made his home with his mother-in-law,Mrs.B.R.PERSON.About 1 o’clock,he went into the coal-house,where he fired the fatal shot.The ball pentrated his heart.The report of this pistol was not heard,and it was sometime before the family knew what had occurred.He left a wife and two interesting children,and scores of friends to deplore the loss. -PERSONAL--Two more loving hearts now beat as one;this time it is Rev.Wm.H.HILL and Mrs.Mary CARUTHERS,who were married at the residence of Miss JOHNSON on Baltimore Street,last Tuesday night.Mr.HILL,fron Nashville,is well known in our city as a piano tuner.Mrs.CARUTHERS,widow of Mr.Thos.CARUTHERS,is well known in Jackson society. --Our friend,Tom DUNCAN rejoices in the possession of a fine baby boy,born Wednesday night of last week.May little Tommie be as good a man as his father. -MARRIED--HILL&CARUTHERS (listed in Personal)Attendants were:Will IRWIN; Miss Johnnie ROBBINS; Will B.POPE; Miss Annie BURKETT; Mr.C.B.HERRON; Miss POPE; W.W.GATES and Mrs.TYNER. --WHITWORTH & REPLOGLE--At the residence of the bride’s father,T.M.REPLOGLE,near Claybrook;Mr.John R.WHITWORTH & Miss Bettie REPLOGLE,with W.L.HARRIS,J.P. officiating --HAMILTON & HUDSON--At the residence of the bride’s father,near Pinson,Feb.3rd,1885,by Rev.Guilford JONES,Dr.F.B.HAMILTON & Miss Neely HUDSON. --PURNELL & DODD--In Chicago,Illinois,on Wednesday,Jan.28th,1885,by Rev.Dr.BRISTOL;Mr.EE.PURNELL,of Chicago and Miss Nellie DODD,of Cincinniti,Ohio.Miss DODD was a former resident of Jackson. -GIBSON ITEMS--Rev.J.B.MOODY,of Fulton,KY,occupied the Baptist Pulpit last Sunday for Bro.HALL. --Ben BURNETT,formerly of this neighborhood,who now lives in East Tennessee,came down one day this week to take unto himself as a helpmeet,our fair young friend,Miss Mattie BERRY. --Miss Alice HENDERSON,of Lavinia,has for the past two weeks visited her cousin,Miss Emma THARP. --FROM THE 8TH DISTRICT--Mr.Henry SHELTON fell upon the ice in his yard and dislocated his thigh. --A negro boy,Bob FREEMAN,living on Mrs.STILL’s farm,met a terrible fate last Monday,by the accidental discharge of his gun.The charge entered his abdomen,and he died in a few hours. -FROM CLAYBROOK--Mrs.GILES died on January 29th,and was buried in Old Cotton Grove Cemetery on the 30th.She leaves a husband and several children to mourn her loss. End of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME II NO.28 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY OCTOBER 10,1885 ================================================================ -CLAYBROOK--Mr.Julius KIRBY died at Ar(t ?)wood,last Sunday,of congeston of the brain.Mr.KIRBY was well known to the people of this community,as he was partly raised among us. --Mrs.Sam GASTON is quite sick with fever. --Mrs.J.H.LANIER is very low. --Charley CARUTHERS and family started for their home in Crockett County.Mrs.CARUTHERS,we are sorry to say,is still in critical condition.She had to be carried home on a bed in a hack. -PERSONAL--A.A.McALEXANDER,w well known carpenter,of east Jackson,received a stroke of paralysis while at work last Monday and is confined to his bed. -A GRETNA GREEN PICNIC--Mr.BENNETT,of the 1st District,three mile from Pinson,a substantial young farmer,came to town Thursday morning and captured Miss Addie Krapp.They were clandestinely married,and at once went to Mr.BARNETT’s home,where we hope they will spend a long and happy life.(both spellings of the name used) -DIED--Sunday,the 4th,at Atwood,Tenn.,Prof.J.R.KIRBY,of congestion.Prof.KIRBY was a nephew of Mr.J.D.PEARSON,chairman of our County Court,with whom he had made his home since his parents deaths.His remains were buried Monday last from the C.P.Church at Atwood. End of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME II NO.50 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY OCTOBER 24,1885 ================================================================ -MARRIED--At St.Luke’s Church,Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock,Miss Fannie BIVENS & Mr.Gus MOODY,both of this city;Rev.HINKLE officiating. -DIED--Mrs.J.H.LANIER,wife of Dr.J.H.LANIER,of near Claybrook,died Wednesday,and will be buried to-day at Lavinia. -PERSONAL--Miss Annie McCUTCHEN,of Denmark,is visiting her sister,Miss Eunie,at the residence of her uncle,Capt.Tom McCUTCHEN. --Mrs.R.F.TAYLOR,who died in this city last week,left her entire estate,valued at $20,000,real estate and personal property property to the Memphis Methodist Conference.The will is dated 1877. --Tommie TATE,nine-years-old,son of a widow lady living near the I.C.Shops,was run over and fatally injured by the cars Tuesday evening about 3 o’clock.He was playing on the track near the shop yards and was amusing himself by placing pins on the rails.The switch engine with several cars made what is called a flying couple,and came detached from the cars while in motion.The little fellow seeing the engine pass,ran into the track and the following cars ran over him,almost severing from his body,one leg and arm.He was carried to his home nearby and expired in a few minutes. End of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME II NO.51 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY OCTOBER 31,1885 ================================================================ -ROBERT SLATER--white,was murdered by Neil McCOLLUM,colored,on the GIBBS farm,five miles east of Jackson,last Tuesday.McCOLLUM is now in jail in this city. -CLAYBROOK, OCT.30,1885--Miss Hattie OZIER,of Henderson,a very charming and sweet young lady,is visiting Claybrook.she is the guest of Miss Laura PURDUE. --Married at the residence of the bride’s father,on the 29th inst.,Miss Ida M.PEARSON to Mr.David L.KEY;Rev.E.P.McGAUGHEY tied the matrimonial knot. -PERSONAL--Miss Kate ANDREWS,of Canton,Miss.,is visiting her cousin,Mrs.B.E.GRAY. --Mrs.Kate Hailey EMERY,of Memphis,is visiting her father,on east LaFayette Street. --Mrs.Ella COTTON has gone to Henderson to live,for the purpose of educating her children. --Mr.Ed CLARKE,of Louisville,is visiting his father,Major E.A.CLARKE and family ,on west Baltimore Street. -Married--At Bolivar,Thursday,29th inst.,Mr.James R.WITHERS,of this city,and Miss Katie BILLS,of Bolivar.Mr.WITHERS is a prominent young merchant of this city. -DIED--At his home near Medon,on the 29th inst.,Mr.J.S.ROCHELLE,aged about 55 years.Deceased was one of the prominent men of his section and was respected as an honorable and upright man by all who knew him. -DIED--Monday,26th,Jno.R.ALSTON,aged 39 years,of pneumonia.The deceased was born and reared in Madison,where he had a host of friends to mourn his loss.He was kind,generous,and warm hearted,always ready to respond to the call of sickness and distress.He was a consistant member of the Presbyterian Church and of the K.of P. We tender our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved wife and little children. End of issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME III NO.1 JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14,1885 ================================================================ -CLAYBROOK;NOVEMBER 13--Anew blacksmith shop is being built on the east side of Main.Mr.W.G.GREEN will run this shop.This makes three shops,three stores,one grist mill and sawmill and one church. --Mr.W.T.PEARSON bought a lot of short horn cattle a few days ago.They came from Middle Tennessee. --The superintendent of the Cumberland Presbyterian Sunday School of Jackson made the following announcement last Sunday;”Mr.W.M.PEARSON,of Claybrook and Miss Jessie McGAUGHEY,city,will be married at this church on Thursday,November 19th,at 10:30 a.m.All are invited to attend.” -PERSONAL--Mrs.M.A.TURNER has returned from Ft.Worth,where she attended the death bed of her husband. --Mr.B.F.GATES,of Oryso,is visiting his son,Mr.Robert GATES. -DESERVES A ROPE--One of the most dastardly and cold blooded murders that ever disgraced Madison County,was committed by Nightwatchman STRONG at the I.C.Shops last Monday morning.A Mr.James GIBSON,of St.Louis,had come in on the 3 o’clock train,and being cold,went to a fire which was kept for the use of employees of the road.One of the two negroes who were standing by the fire gave GIBSON his lantern and told him to get some wood from a pile nearby and fix up the fire,that he might get warm.Gibson got two sticks of wood,and while in the act of putting them on the fire,STRONG came up and demanded:”You --- -- -----,where did you get that wood?”,at the same time striking GIBSON,almost knocking him down,and before he straightened himself up,STRONG drew his pistol and shot him through the abdomen,inflicting a wound from which he died in a few hours.GIBSON had been on a strike in St.Louis and had lost hid situation and was on his way to New Orleans to look for work.He was a Knight of Labor in good standing.The members of the Order of this city took charge of him,and did all they could to relieve his sufferings while he lived and buried him when he died.STRONG made his escape.STRONG is about 45 years old,5’8” high,heavy set;would weigh about 180 pounds;had dark hair and beard,the latter grown long;his left arm has been broken and is shorter than the other.He is a brother of Jack STRONG,a respected and worthy citizen of San Francisco,Calif.Any information on his whereabouts should be sent to Sheriff B.A.PERSON,of this city. -NO TRIAL IN JACKSON--for many years has attracted so much attention as the case of Jno.SMALLEY vs I.C.R.R. It continued nearly a week,and resulted in a mistrial,the jury failing to agree.Four were for acquital and eight for $10,ooo damages.The case will be tried again December 4th at a special term. -DIED--In this city,November 10th,Mrs.Ann Eliza COX,an aged and respected lady,mother of Mrs.Robert GATES,with whom she made her home for many years. -DIED--At his residence on north Royal Street,after a short illness with pneumonia,Albert SNEED,brother of R.A.& E.D.SNEED.Deceased leaves a wife and family. -DIED--Walter HOLDEN,son of M.& J. HOLDEN,died in Memphis Thursday and was buried in Riverside Cemetery yesterday. -DIED--At the residence of his sister,Mrs.A.E.STILL,three miles south of Jackson,Dr.T.C.GAYLE,in the 62nd year of his age. -MARRIED--At the residence of Mrs.Rush PERSON,the mother of the bride;Mr.J.B.HICKS and Miss Lelia PERSON;Rev.Guilford JONES officiating.An elegant supper was prepared and enjoyed by a large number of friends,who had assembled to wish the young couple a happy life.They were recipients of many handsome and costly presents. -MARRIED--Mr.Abner J,McGEHEE,of this city,and Miss Jennie M.DODDS,of Whistler,Ala.,were united in marriage at Whistler last Tuesday.Mr.McGEHEE is a rising lawyer of Jackson,and his fair bride is a lady of rare accomplishments. -MEDINA--Mr.James McFARLAND has just arrived from Texas with his family.He tried the “Far West”one year,he now thinks Tennessee good enough. SMH.) -DIED--Mr.F.SPAH,Monday,November 29th,at his residence in North-west Jackson;services by Rev.Geo.W.HINKLE. -IN MEMORIAM--Died November 26th,Claribel,daughter of J.C.& Isabella ROBINSON;aged 11 years.she was a sweet child,gentle and clinging in ways,loving and tender in disposition.Her death was sudden and unexpected.well nigh breaking the hearts of mother and father,and saddening the face of friends with sorrow.A sweet flower,too delicate for the cold and chilling winds of this earth-and the angel of death but transplanted her to heavenly soil,where there are no withering winds,no trouble or care. -MARRIED--At St.Luke’s Church,in this city,on the 2nd,by Rev.G.W.HINKLE,Mr.A.L.MILNER,of Fulton,Ky.,and Miss Annie SCURLOCK,of this city.Mr.MILNER is a leading merchant of Fulton,and the bride is one of Jackson’s most esteemed young ladies. -PERSONAL--Mr.H.J.STEVENS,of Claybrook,has sold his farm,and with his family,has gone to Weatherford,Texas.Mr.STEVENS is a good farmer and a clever man. --Mrs.Jno H.TRICE and Miss Lora TRICE,two of Chester County’s fairest daughters,are visiting friends in the city. --Mr.BARTLETT,of Texas,a former citizen of Madison County,is visiting the family of Mr.Julius JONES in East Jackson. --Henry CHAPPEL,John LANCASTER and Will BOOKER,left for Miss.,Thursday,where they have situations under Capt.FARRAR on the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad. --Capt.H.P.FARRAR has returned to his new railroad in Miss.He was accompanied by Gus HAUSER,Jr.,and W.M.BARR,both of whom Capt.FARRAR gave employment. --Capt.J.G.MANN,in company with the Vice-President of the I.C.R.R.,Stuyvesant FISH,son of ex-Secretary FISH,left Sunday for Miss.,to review the new branch of the road. --Capt.J.J.WILLIAMS is making a survey of a route for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad for the purpose of changing the road to run through Union City.No better man could have been gotten for the work. --Mrs.Dr.FENNER has returned from New York,where she has been placing her daughter,Miss Mattie,in the National School of Design.Miss Mattie is destined to be one of the great artists of the future.She possesses rare talent,with the industry & energy necessary to succeed. --We had a very pleasant call Wednesday from Mr.G.B.DAWS,of Crucifer.Some months ago Mr.DAWS let his subscription to the Blade expire,and the results is twins are born unto him,and twin girls at that.he recognizes this increase in his family as the direct result of his carelessness in not renewing his subscriptions. --Mr.Henry HAMMERLY has been elected Secretary and Manager of the Jackson Milling Company,in place of Mr.J.M.McGLATHERY,resigned. --W.H.B.HILL has located in this city and purposes to time instruments in a first class manner and to also sell fine instruments. End of this issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE FORKED DEER BLADE VOLUME III NO.5 SATURDAY DECEMBER 12,1885 JACKSON,TENNESSEE ================================================================ -SAULSBURY,NC--is macadamizing her streets with gold quartz worth $15 a ton. -GOLDEN WEDDING--On Tuesday,the 8th,Col.& Mrs.W.W.GATES,of this city,celebrated their golden wedding.Owing to the serious sickness of a son,Mr.Charlie GATES,of Oxford,Miss.,the festival was confined to the family. -Mr.A.C.CALDWELL,of Fulton,Ky.,for many years a citizen of Jackson,was in town Monday. --Miss Fannie GLENN,10th District,had her barn and its contents destroyed by fire a week ago.A negro is supposed to know something of the origin of the fire. --Annie PURNELL,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.F.E.PURNELL,born November 13th,at South Park,Chicago.Mrs.PURNELL is known in Jackson as Miss Nellie DODD.She was connected with the Cisco Bookstore last winter. --DIED--At Poplar Springs,on the 8th,Rev.William BELL,known as “Uncle Billy”.Deceased was born in 1806,professed religion in early life;was licensed to preach in 1836;has been a minister of the gospel in the C.P.Church for 49 years.He died at the age of 79 years.The funeral services took place (by his request)at his home yesterday,conducted by Rev.E.P.McGAUGHEY and Rev.L.Z.JACKSON,who from the fifth chapter and 26th verse of Job,made appropriate remarks for the occasion.His remains will be deposited at the Beech Grove Cemetery,to day,the 10th. ************************************************************************
