THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14,1885 DESERVES A ROPE..One of the most dastardly and cold blooded murders that ever disgraced Madison County,was committed by Nightwatchman STRONG at the I.C.Shops last Monday morning.A Mr.JAMES GIBSON of St.Louis,had come in on the 3 o'clock train,and being cold,went to a fire which was kept for the use of emplotees of the road.One of two negroes who were standing by the fire gave GIBSON his latern and told him to get some wood from a pile nearby and fix up the fire,that he might get warm.GIBSON got two sticks of wood,and while in the act of putting them on the fire STRONG came up and demanded:"You__ __ ___,where did you get that wood!" at the same time striking GIBSON,almost knocking him down,and before he straightened himself up,STRONG drew his pistol and shot him through the abdomen,inflicting a wound from which he died in a few hours.GIBSON had been on strike in St.Louis and had lost his situation and was on his way to New Orleans to look for work.He was a Knight of Labor in g ood standing.The members of the Order of this city took charge of him and did all they could to relieve his sufferings,while he lived and buried him when he died.STRONG made his escape.STRONG is about 45 years old,5'8" high,heavt set; would weigh about 180 pounds; had dark brown hair and beard,the latter grown long; his left arm has been broken anbd is shorter than the other.He is a brother of JACK STRONG,a respected and worthy citizen of San Francisco,Calif.Any information on his whereabouts should be sent to Sheriff B.A.PEARSON this city. DR.CRAWFORD,late superintendent of education of Nebraska,has come with his family to make Jackson their home.DR.C.says he met Col.GATES at the World's Fair last winter,and there he saw the public school exhibit; and any town having two such institutions is good enough for him. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY DECEMBER 19,1885 SPECIAL TO THE BLADE;HOLLY SPRINGS,MISS.,DEC.18th..At 12 o'clock yesterday,HENRY SHARP,of Jackson,Tenn., was found dead in his bed.He came here from Memphis and put up at a boarding house near the depot,and told the landlady not to put anyone in the room with him as his snoring would disturb them.At 11 o'clock yesterday she heard him snoring,and about 12 o'clock sent to him to be awakened,when it was discovered he was dead.The Coroner was notified and a jury inquest was impanelled.They returned a verdict of death from congestion.His remains will be shipped to Jackson for interment. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY DECEMBER 26,1885 HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW...HENRY McKNIGHT was killed near Malesus,four miles south of this place last Saturday evening by his brother-in-law,REUBEN WINSET.It appears the men fought during the day,WINSETT getting the best of McKNIGHT.After they had separated,WINSET then went to Mr.HORTON'S residence,picked up a gun,and when asked what he was going to do,said,"I'm going to kill McKNIGHT." Taking the gun and started up the road,when he came up with McKNIGHT in a wagon,shooting him in the forehead,blowing off the top of his head.The murderer then went home and told his father what he had done.The murdered man was found 200 yards from the residence of old Mr.WINSET,his father-in-law,lying by the road side.It is reported that an open Barlow knife was found under where the dead man lay.The murderer made his escape. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 30,1886 LAST MONDAY NIGHT..about 8 o'clock,as the passenger train on the T.C.Railroad,Conductor WALTER CALHOUN was nearing the Tallahatchie river near Abbeville,Miss.,the Engineer,Mr.WILLIAM RUFFIN discovered that a rail had been dislocated in such a way as to throw the train from the track.The engine,baggage,mail and smoking cars were thrown from the 12-foot high trestle into the water below.In the fall one of Mr.RUFFIN'S feet was caught under the tender in such a manner as to break his leg and hold him fast.He was held in this position in the cold water for about five hours,when the wrecking train arrived and he was released from his terrible position but the relief came too late and the suffering man died in a short time after being taken from the water.Several others were slightly bruised,among them Mr.VOL SEIVER,of this city,mail agent. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 26,1887 OUR READERS..will remember an account a few months ago of a machinest by the name of M.W.LAWRENCE passing a forged check on Mr.SAM TATE,at the store of Mr.WM.HOLLAND.The same fellow,under the name of Wm.H.LAWRENCE,is wanted for a recent forgery in East Saginaw,Mich.He is about 35 years old,weighs 175 pounds,is well built,square shouldered,five feet seven inches in height,light complexion,full face,blue eyes,brown hair,bald head to the crown of head,has short sandy moustache; wears glasses.He is wanted in this city as well as in East Saginaw. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY DECEMBER 3,1887 A BRIDE FOR A WEEK..One of the saddest deaths it has been our duty to chronicle is that of Mrs.DeWITT C.NEWMAN nee Miss MATTIE GILLIAM,who died in Chicago Monday last.Two weeks ago we announced the marriage of this charming young lady as taking place in Claybrook Nov.17th.On Friday the 18th,Mr.NEWMAN and his beautiful bride started for Chicago,where upon her arrival,she was seized with a violent form of typhiod fever.After one weeks suffering she breathed her last in the arms of her sorrowing husband.The remains were interred in Riverside Cemetery,this city,Tuesday,Rev.BLACKMON officiating.
