THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 7,1888 MR.JOHN J.BROWN..died near Lavinia December 25th,1887,aged 82 years.He leaves a wife nearly his own age,a number of children and grandchildren.He waited on Col.W.W.GATES when he was married.one-half century ago.His father married Col.GATES and Miss ANN McCUTCHEN who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in this city two years ago. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 7,1888 MR.W.C.NEELY..an old and respected citixen died at his home near Denmark last Saturday morning,December 31st,aged 66 years.Mr.NEELY came to Madison County with his parents over a half a century ago,when he was only seven years of age from Mecklenburg County,N.C. The remains were buried at Denmark Sunday. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 21,1888 A SOCIAL MONSTER..GEORGE ALLEY,a well-known drummer,who for years made his home in this city,has,by an infamous crime,not only destroyed his own character but has blighted the life of a most estimable young lady.Friday the 13th inst.,ALLEY,knowing that trouble was brewing,sold his stock in the Second National Bank,this city,his Building & Loan stock,and left for parts unknown.Saturday morning Dr.FARRIS of Hickman,Ky.,and H.D.MURPHY of Fulton,Ky.,arrived in Jackson on his track.The crime for which he is wanted is the seduction of a Miss T.____,the beautiful daughter of a prominent citizen of Hickman,Ky.The young lady is about 18 years of age,was highly educated ans accomplished.ALLEY had been paying her attention for about two years,and under promise of marriage,robbed her of her honor,then left her in ahame and disgrace.ALLEY was a fast young man of the world-one who had filled a social position in this and other cities far beyond what his intelligence or moral character warr anted. Mr.J.M.TOSH and wife of Gibson were in the city this week.Mrs.TOSH was a witness in the McEWEN case. Miss MAYFLOWER JONES has accepted a position as assistant teacher in the Toone Institute,Prof.ROSE,principal. Capt.J.M.McGLATHERY returned on Monday to his work as agent and operator for the L.N.O.&O.R.R.,serving them eight years,leaving the railroad on his own in 1884,he organized and put into operation the Jackson Milling and Manfacturing Co. This has been the coldest week of the season; 6 degrees above zero was the lowest point reached,three inches of snow,or rather sleet,fell Sun.,Mon.,& Tues. Miss MARY ELIZA BALCH accompanied the bridal couple-Mr.& Mrs.W.M.HARRISON,to LaGrange Thursday evening.She will vis it Memphis and Nashville before returning home. Mr.DAVID W>WHITAKER,of Crockett County,is in the city with the view of forming a partnership with his brother,Mr.L.W.WHITAKER in establishing a drug store in the house recently vacated by Mr.S.W.BOON. On last Thursday HENRY O'NEIL,of the 12th District,while out rabbit hunting,shot off three of his fingers,and injured one of his eyes.He is now paralyzed and is in critical condition. Capt.J.M.WOOLLARD was painfully hurt by a fall near the Union depot Monday.The extent of his injury was a sprain in the hip.It is hoped he will be up soon. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 21,1888 DEATH OF ROBERT McINTOSH..At 6:30 o'clock Tuesday evening,January 17th,1888,the light of a long life went out.ROBERT McINTOSH was born in the parish of Liff,Scotland,at 7 o'clock on the morning of Wednesday,26th day of April 1809.He was the eight child of WILLIAM McINTOSH and MARTHA BROWN,to whom were born eleven children,nine sons and two daughters.When young,he learned the tailor's trade,and on reaching his majority sailed from Dundee,Forfarshire,the later part of April,1832,landing in New York the 1st of July following.He lived in New York City until the fall of 1836 when he moved to Alabama; he worked at his trade in Mobile,Montgomery,New orleans and Louisville.From the latter place,he moved here to this city in the spring of 1840 where he lived until his death.During his protracted illness,lasting more than twelve months,his wants were provided for by a friend.His faithful nurses,JERRY BLAIR and Mr.JO.W.TYSON were with him in his last moments.___J.W.G. Miss LYDA SPRAGUE,accompanied by her cousin,Miss ETHEL SNOW,left Sunday for the Crescent City,where they will remain a month visiting their uncle,Col.F.H.ROBINSON. Mr.H.H.CARTER,foreman of the Dispatch,has been sick for three weeks.Within a week paralysis has taken place in his lower limb. Miss LIZZIE CAMPBELL was seriously hurt in a fall while coasting on the college grounds a few evenings ago. Prof.A.P.BOURLAND received a telegram from Ark.,Thursday stating that his father was very sick. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 28,1888 MIDDLETON HAYES,JR..aged 18 years,a bakeman on the M & O railroad,while in the discharge of his duty,fell from the top of a freight car on the night of the 20th inst.,near Carroll Switch,and was horribly crushed by the car wheels passing over one arm and one leg.He was not missed by the men on the train,and lay on the ground until the next train pass when he was discovered almost lifeless.He was brought to his home in this city where he was placed under the care of Dr.JNO.S.FENNER,who did all medical skill could do to relieve his suffering,but he was beyond human help,and died in a few hours. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JANUARY 28,1888 BANNER DISTRICT,JAN.25TH..The MERWINS and McREES were wrecked last week on their way to Washington Territory about eighty miles from St.Paul.They were thrown out in the snow with the mercury at 40 degres below zero about 9 o'clock at night.There was no one badley hurt,however.BUD McREE was thrown from the upper berth head foremost into a snow drift and possibly lost his derby.Mrs.MERWIN and her three babies were uninjured. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY MARCH 17,1888 THE DEATH..of Mr.JOE CARUTHERS was a shock to his relatives and friends in this city.The sad event which occurred Friday of last week near Oceols,Ark.,was wholly unexpected.He was a brother of STODDERT CARUTHERS,Esq.,of this city.H was born and reared in Jackson.At an early he enlisted in the Sixth Regiment,Tennessee Volunteers,C.S.A.,and served with credit to the end of the war between the states.Since '81 or '82 he resided in Ark. following the profession of land surveyor.Peace to his ashes. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY MARCH 17,1888 HON.J.M.PORTERFIELD..Attorney General for this district,died at his home in this city at midnight Tuesday after two weeks' illness with pneumonia.He went to Purdy to attend court and while there was taken sick and returned home,after which he never left in life.He was born in Harden County,Tennessee March 1st,1839.He was a gallant soldier during the late war.He leaves a sorrowing wife and eight children-the oldest 18 years of age.His first wife was a daughter of DR.REEDER of Harden County.She died several years ago leaving him with seven children.The wife who survives him was a Miss MARY WOOD of Paducah,Ky.,they were married eleven months ago and have one child,one month old.The funeral was held in the First M.E.Church,Rev.RAMSEY officiating.The Jackson bar attended in a body,and after the funeral met in the courthouse and adopted the suitable resolutions with regard to a deceased brother.Mrs.PORTERFIELD is quite ill also. Mrs.P.ALSTON,of the 6th district,is quite ill with cancer of the breast.We hope venerable lady may recover and continue to gladden her home. Major J.M.McGLATHERY came home from Louisianna a few days to attend his little son,who has been quite sick. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY MARCH 17,1888 A COLORED WOMAN..by the name of MOLLIE WASHINGTON was so badly burned Friday night,9th inst.,that she died Saturday morning.MOLLIE was a good,quiet,industrious woman,who had been cooking for Mrs.CARTMELL for the past year.Her husband,WILL,was a shiftless "yellow feller," who found more pleasure in laying around the kitchen quarrelling with his wife than in labor.About 10:30 Friday night the people in the neighborhood were aroused by the unearthly screams of someone in distress and rushing out found MOLLIE coming out of her room,eneveloped in a sheet of flame,her husband following her screaming,but making no effort to put out the fire.BOB THURSTON,who was passing,threw a bucket of water on the poor creature and pulled off her burning clothing.There being some suspicious circumstances in the case,the coroner's jury was called in to investigate.Two witnesses said MOLLIE had said WILL had poisoned her; and that he made her lie in front of the fireplace instead of going to bed bec ause she was sick and bathed her in coal oil and then wouldn't put the fire.While the circumstances were suspicious the jury did not feel justified in ordering an arrest and further investigation.The woman died at 10:15 in the morning and the husband wanted her buried the same afternoon. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JUNE 16,1888 CONDUCTOR WM.PEARCY..of the I.C.road was killed Monday morning about two o'clock.He was on top of his train,just entering Fulton,Ky.,when he fell between the cars and was frightfully mangled.Mr.PEARCY leaves a wife and one child in this city.He is a son of Capt.J.B.PEARCY,living one mile north of this city. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JUNE 16,1888 DIED..at the residence of her son,Mr.F.J.SNOW in East Jackson Thursday afternoon,Mrs.POLLY B.SNOW,aged 80 years.She was born in Vermont,but had made her home here with her son for some time.She has been suffering with dropsy of the heart,and when the angel of death came she quietly and without a struggle breathed her last.The funeral,conducted by Rev Dr.ROBERTS was held at the East Jackson M.E.Church. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JUNE 23,1888 MR.COKE LONG..of the 16th district was shot twice by someone in ambush last Saturday night as he was going from Esq.BIRFSONG's to his home.The wounds,though painful,are not necessarily fatal.It has been learned since that the shooting was done by a neighbor's boy,FRANK KING,who was hunting an owl,and being near- sighted,mistook Mr.LONG for an owl,and popped away. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY JUNE 23,1888 B.H.FRONVILLE..of the 17th district killed a neighbor by the name WM.ESTOP last Thursday.ESTOP had frequently threatened to kill FONVILLE because he said he was to intimate with his (ESTOP's) wife.On the day of the killing ESTOP slapped FONVILLE's son for the purpose,it was thought of causing the father to resent it.FONVILLE went to ESTOP's house to learn the cause of the assault,when he was met by Mrs.ESTOP with a knife and cut in the face.ESTOP also advanced with a knife.When FONVILLE was getting in a pretty close place,his little son arrived with a gun which he handed his father who put the muzzle againzt ESTOP's breast and fired,the charge passing through the heart and left breat killing him instantly.FONVILLE surrendered himself to Esq.STEPHENSON,who upon examination decided that the killing was justifiable. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13,1891 REV.G.T.WEBB..died at his home on East Baltimore Street Wednesday morning.Mr.WEBB was born April 6,1819; married November 28,1838; began preaching in 1847,since which time he has been a active minister of the Baptist Church.He was pastor at Hepsiba Baptist Church near Luray,Henderson Co.TN for over forty years,at which place,at his request,his mortal remains were buried.He leaves a widow and one son. THE FORKED DEER BLADE JACKSON,TENNESSEE SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13,1891 MR.HORACE BLEDSOE..or "Uncle Horace," as he was called by most,died at his home on Royal street Tuesday night after an illness of a month with inflamation of the stomach.He had suffered much and had eaten nothing for a month.The remains were buried in Riverside Cemetery Wednesday with Masonic honors.He was born in NC in 1810,went to Middle Tennessee while a young man,married Miss ELIZABETH THOMAS.He came to Jackson when it was a small village and built a double log house on Royal street in 1836,which has been his home ever since.He served thru the Mexican War,returning to Jackson to his occupation as brickmason.He also served four years in the Confederate army.He was never blessed with children,but "Aunt Lizzie" and "Uncle Horace" had several adopted daughters whom they raised.His good wife survives him. JIMMY RUSH broke his arm by jumping from a car near the Union Depot Sunday morning. The boiler at Smith's Foundry exploded Saturday the 21st,making a wreck of the building.Loss $3000. Dr.D.V.MITCHELL,brother of Mr.Sam MITCHELL,has bought the office of Dr.W.D.REID and will practice Dentistry in this city.
