TENNESSEE NEWS..CHARLES TALIAFERRO has been elected County Clerk of Haywood County in lieu of MR.MEDLIN,deceased. TENNESSEE NEWS..Crockett Sentinel-Elder W.S.BYARS of the Baptist church,formerly a school teacher in Alamo died last Thursday at his home near Friendship. TENNESSEE NEWS..A German named MASON was killed Saturday at Ashport,fifty miles above Memphis,by SCOTT HENLEY,while attempting to kill HENLEY's father. TENNESSEE NEWS..A fire Monday in Memphis destroyed the clothing store of H.Cohen & Bros.,John P.HUGHES saloon,and several other small buildings on Charleston Avenue.Loss,@20,000,uninsured. TENNESSEE NEWS..Columbia Herald-Last Friday and Saturday nights,dogs killed and murdered twenty four sheep belonging to JARVIS PRIMM of the Rock Springs country.About the same time in the same neighborhood,stray dogs killed all the sheep Mr.THOS.S.LEFTWICH had. TENNESSEE NEWS..Lebanon Herald-Mr.ETHELDRED BASS,familiarly known to almost everybody in Wilson County as "GRAASER BASS," died at his residence ,ten miles southeast of Lebanon and one mile north of Cherry Valley,last week,at the age of ninity-two years.He was probably the oldest person in the county at his death,and was in many respects a remarkable man. TENNESSEE NEWS..Last Friday a bright little boy,one year and a hald,child of THOMAS MOODY,of Shankland street drant a solution of concentrated lye,from a small can in which that article is usually sold in solid form.Notwithstanding the use of antidotes the little sufferer died in about 36 hours. TENNESSEE NEWS..Ripley News-Mr.JOHN MAYNARD was shot twice with a double-barrel shot gun near his residence in the sixth district on last Saturday,and so seriously wounded that he died on the following Tuesday.SAMUEL BIBB,a citizen of the neighborhood is said to have done the shooting,it is alleged that jealousy was the cause.BIBB made his escape and is still at large.MAYNARD leaves a wife and several children.BIBB is also a married man and has several children. TENNESSEE NEWS..Banner Centerville Letter-Mr.LEWIS BATES and THOS.TOOMEY had a heated altercation this evening about the depredations of stock belonging to Mr.TOOMEY on the wheat field of BATES,in which the latter (BATES) shot the former in the head with a Deringer pistol,the ball entering the right eye and ranging downwards,causing a very bad if not dangerous wound.The attendant physicians entertain little hope of his recovery.Mr.BATES gave himself up and was tried before Justices CLAGETT and BROOM,and bound over to appear at the next term of the Circuit Court in June. TENNESSEE NEWS..BOLIVAR BULLITIN..We learn that near Brown's steam mill on the TAYLOR place in McNairy,SAM BROWN and John GOOCH had some words and BROWN said he would whip GGOCH when he caught him out in his yard.BROWN went to his field and shortly after GOOCH appeared with a double barrell shot gun.GOOCH brought his gun down ad as BROWN sprang at him he received the load of turkey shot in his arm.GOOCH is supposed to have gone to MISSISSIPPI.BROWN is at present up and about, THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 MRS.LINCOLN..the relict of Abraham Lincoln is insane.Upon petition of her son and the certificates of her physcians she has been adjudged -non compos mentis- and will be placed in an asylum for the insane.She has property to the amount of $75,000. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 MAJOR J.P.STRANGE died at Memphis on the night of the 17th.He was better known as the Adjutant General on Gen.Forrest's staff during the war,which office he filled with great ability and on every field displayed the highest bravery. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 TENNESSEE NEWS..JOEL QUINNEL,a soldier stationed at Humboldt,fell from a wagon.Was run over and killed. TENNESSEE NEWS..The Ripley News says a large quantities of timber are shipped from Hatchie bottom to Indianna,and made into wagons which are shipped back and sold to this market.That speaks badly for the enterprise of our people. TENNESSEE NEWS.. There are now confined in the Memphis jail 107 prisioners.Of those,three colored women-LIZZIE LYONS,Mrs.WOOLRIDGE and CHARLOTTE NORMAN-are charged with murder.There are six white men charged with murder,and ten negroes- four of whom are under sentence of death. TENNESSEE NEWS..A colored church at Salem,five miles from Brownsville,was burned by incendiaries Monsay night.It is said that there had been a very bitter split recently in the church and that the house was entirely divided against it's self.Just before the fire,neighbors heard loud talk in the church and upon approshing smelt the fumes of coal oil.A strange was,as the Democrat says,to settle an argument. TENNESSEE News..Nashville Banner-It was reported in the city yesterday that a boy ten ot twelve years old,the son of a Mr.FERRY,residing northwest of Nashville,getting tired of nursing his sister,an infant six months old,took down a pistol and shot her,the ball putting both eyes and producing a fatal wound.She was living yesterday. TENNESSEE NEWS..Chilhowee Correspondence Maryville Republican-On Wednesday,the 5th,as a son of Mr.A.J.SAUNDERS was plowing in a field on the old Grant farm,in this section,all at once the team broke through the ground into a hole,which upon examination was found to contain a human skeleton extremely large sized bones,but not unusual length.It was in a sitting posture,the head and jaws were well preserved and in perfect shape.The teeth was sound sixteen above and sixteen below.Some of the teeth were loose enough to be pulled out with the fingers. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 MILAN NEWS..There have been three deaths in this community with in the past week.Near Picketville on the 15th, MRS.M.A.SENTER,aged 50 years DIED of consumption. In this place last Friday,JOSEPH RIFFLE,a citizen of Texas and bridge contractor,DIED also of consumption,aged 30 years. MR.A.PATTON,one of the oldest and best citizens of our community DIED of pneumonia.He had been sick about six weeks,suffering a great deal.His remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery,Milam,19th May,1875. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 DIED..In this city on the 18th,JNO.L.LANCASTER,aged about 50 years.He has for the past 35 years been a resident of Madison County,and may be classed as one of it's oldest citizens, THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE MAY 21,1875 DIED..At his residence in this county,W.B.MANLY,the 20th,aged 50 years.He has long been a resident of this place,and was one of the best farmers in the county. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 4,1875 TENNESSEE NEWS..Nashville Union and American-JOHN WILEY,of this county was instantly killed by lightening Wednesday.The currant passed from his head down the spinal column to his feet. TENNESSEE NEWS..Nashville Union and American-Friday night WILLIAM FAULKNER,store-keeper of a distillarly near McMinnville,was burned to death by the ignition of brandy which he was drawing by lamp-light. TENNESSEE NEWS..Ripley News-J.L.LEA,of Fulton,was on last Thursday shot,and from all accounts dangerously wounded by one of his tenants named NEVINS.We understand that MR.LEA had a deed of trust on NEVINS',which horse NEVINS was trying to get away.MR.LEA followed and overtook him within a few miles of Fulton and was takinghim back,when unexpectedly NEVINS drew a pistol and shot,the ball entering a little below the back of the left ear,lodging in the head of MR.LEA,who immediately fell from his horse; NEVINS with his horse taking off. A force is in pursuit of NEVINS,and it is to be hoped that he will be captured. TENNESSEE NEWS..Ripley NEWS-We again have to chronicile another murder in our county,which occurred near Glimpville on the 17th of May in which CROCKETT GLIMP was killed by JAMES THOMPASON.The difficulty,as we learn,grew out of GLIMP'S stock trespassing on THOMPSON'S premises,of which he notified him,but to no purpose,and had thus ended in the death of GLIMP.This is the third murder committed in our county in the last three weeks. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 4,1875 PERSONAL..We are deeply pained to announce that Gen.JOHN J.BROOKS is still very low.He has been sick for several weeks and it is with sincere sorrow that we learn that his condition has never been worse.This news will sadden many hearts in this city and county,for it can be truly said of GEN.BROOKS that to know,was to esteem him.However he has the very best medical attention and affectionate home nursing,and may yet recover. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 4,1875 LOCAL..On Saturday night last some vagrant turned burglar and entered the residence of MR.WM.HOLLAND.He left his key in the pantry door,but it is supposed he became alarmed and left without getting anything. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 4,1875 A ROBBER SHOT..On Sunday night last,a burglar entered the sleeping apartment of MR.ROBERT BROWN,SR., on Royal street,but was discovered before effecting his purpose.He had left his shoes and when the shoes were discovered by his pursuers,Messrs.WILLIAM,PERRY,and ELISHA BROWN,sons of Mr.ROBERT BROWN,they resolved to wait to see if he returned for them.Sure enough,about one o'clock,the thief approached,the young men did not move until he picked up the shoes,then they called for him to surrender.He ran,they fired,he fell at the crossing of Smith and Market streets.He is a negro,and gives his name as AARON WILSON and hails from Corinth,Miss. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE..occurred last Sunday night in Ripley,Lauderdale county,Tennessee.The losses are estimated as follows: OLDHAM'S HOTEL,$15,000; GROVES & TARRANTS dry goods store,$5,000; MR.BADGER harness shop,$1,000; J.F.BANDARY,$5,000: HENDRON'S livery stable,$3,000: BYARD & DONAHUE'S whiskey store,$2,000: HYSTER's saloon,$1,000: MR.ROSS,business house,$2,000.Total $30,500.Bedides this,several unoccupied houses were burned and twenty hogs burned up. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 THE GLADIATORS..CROSBY,the negro sheriff of Warren County,Mississippi was shot by his deputy in a barroom at Vicksburg on the 7th.The ball entered under the left eye,lodging in the back part of the head.It is supposed that the wound is mortal.He will be remembered as the instrument of GOV.AMES in inciting the famous Warren County troubles last fall,which caused the death of so many of his race in their attempt to sack the city of Vicksburg.Justice though tardy is certain. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 TENNESSEE NEWS..J.H.WILKERSON was drowned last week in Obion River,Dyer County. TENNESSEE NEWS..Nashville Banner-SAMUEL POWERS,a prominent merchant,died at his late residence on North College street Sunday. TENNESSEE NEWS..THE HON.D.C.SLAUGHTER-of Tipton County killed a negro man by the name of MINGO BERNARD last week.The negro had been stealing and was killed in resisting arrest. TENNESSEE NEWS..Dyersburg Gazette-While loading a steamboat last Saturday at FAY & HUNTER"S mill,in this county,a white laborer named J.H.WILKERSON fell into the river and was drowned. TENNESSEE NEWS..Murfreesboro News-Mrs.ELIZABETH FULKS,probably theoldest lady in our company,died on the 18th of May 1875.She was born the 15th day of January 1775,being 100 years,4 months and 13 days old.She was born in Penn.,fifty miles from Philadelphia,and emigrated with her husband,JOHN FULKS,to Rutherford county,in the fall of 1804 and settled where the poorhouse is now located in the year 1806. TENNESSEE NEWS..Shelbyville Commercial-Last Monday evening,Miss JENNIE LEE BOOTHE,ten years of age,daughter of the late JERRY BOOTHE,whose widow resides about nine miles northwest of Shelbyville,went into the kitchen to build a fire in the stove to get supper.In order to make the wood burn quick,she took the coal-oil can and poured oil on the fire,which ignited and exploded the can,setting her clothes on fire.She ran into the bedroom where her sister BETTIE was.In her efforts to put out the flames,her clothes caught fire and burned off her.MISS JENNIE died Tuesday morning,and MISS BETTIE,who is sixteen,is not expected to live. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 OUTRAGED BY A NEGRO..Baltimore,Md.,June 7.On Saturday,near Oderton,a negro outraged MISS JACKSON,a young lady of 18,most respectably connected and greatly beloved in the neighborhood.Her parents were absent,and she went to a spring a short distance from the house for water.While returning,she was met by the negro,who seized her by the throat and dragged her in the bush,loaded gun in hand,and threatening to kill her if she resisted.Her clothing was torn in shreds,her neck terribly cut and bruised.The negro was captured this morning in the swamp,and confessed the crime.Several attempts were made to lynch him,but his captors got him on the train for Annapolis. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 SUICIDE OF A PROMINENT CITIZEN..On Saturday last MR.S.H.BRAZZELTON,a prominent citizen of this city,committed suicide in the St.Charles Hotel in Cairo,Ill.The terrible deed was executed with laudanum and chloroform,after taking in extraordinary quantities,he lived for about 18 hours,literally slumbering into the embraces of death.He died at 5 o'clock on Monday morning.His remains were buried at Dresden,Tenn.,his old home,Monday evening. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 A MYSTERIOUS MURDER..Wednesday night the 4th,a negro woman,wife of one GUS EVERHART,was shot dead in the door of her cabin near Denmark,by some person unknown.Her cabin was on the farm of MR.JOHN TERRILL and her husband was cropping with ALF TYSON.Several shots were fired at her,one taking effect in her bowels and passing through,causing almost instant death.The ball was evidentley fired from a navy-six pistil.No clue whatever has been found to the strange and shocking crime. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 11,1875 DEATH OF MRS.HAMBY..The many friends and acquaintances of MR.W.R.HAMBY and his most estimable wife will be deeply pained to learn that MRS.HAMBY is dead.She died in Nashville at the Commercial Hotel last week.Her remains were carried to Paris by her grief-stricken husband for interment. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 18,1875 PAGE 2..The negro who outraged the person of an estimable young lady of Anna Arundel,Maryland last week was hung by a mob on Tuesday. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 18,1875 TENNESSEE NEWS..WALTER EASTMAN,of Memphis,was drowned in Niagara river recently. TENNESSEE NEWS..JOHN ORR jumped from a frieght train at Humboldt last week and received injuries from which he died. TENNESSEE NEWS..Knoxville Press & Herald-A young man named EADS was shot and killed near Johnson City two days ago.It is said that he accompanied a married woman who left Greenville about that time,and suspicion naturely points to the legal protectors of the woman. TENNESSEE NEWS..Milan Exchange-Last Wednesday evening,MRS.LASITER,living on Main street gave an overdose of morphine to her little daughter,aged about seven years.As soon as she discovered her mistake,DR.PEARCE was called in,but too late to save the child who died about twelve o'clock p.m. TENNESSEE NEWS..On Friday last,Mrs.William Jarre,living seven miles from Murfreesboro,was murdered in her own house during the absence of her husband.It is supposed she was murdered for money,as a large sum was missing from the house.a negro man named JESSE WOODSON,was arrested on suspicion. TENNESSEE NEWS..A wagoner by the name of W.A.GARDNER was drugged near Ripley last week and robbed of $377.00.He describes the robber as a heavyset man,about five feet seven inches in height,dark skin,light hair,heavy mustache and scar as if from a cut on his neck.He was dressed in a suit of grey and wore a low crown black felt hat. TENNESSEE NEWS..A man named HAM RUSSEL had his throat cut and was killed by his son-in-law,Henry Price,about four miles northwest of Pocahontas,Hardeman county one day last week.PRINCE had married a daughter of RUSSELL'S shortly before the tragedy,and against her father's consent.RUSSEL visited Pocahontas and on his way home,accompanied by STEVE RUSSEL,his brother,and JOHN KIRK,a quarrel ensued which resulted as before stated.RUSSEL was a desperate man when angered.Upon examination of the case,PRICE was aquaitted. TENNESSEE NEWS..Milan Exchange..We are informed that a heart rending accident occurred near Vernable JOHNSON'S steam mill,in the eastern part of Gibson County last Friday.The wife of MR.M.E.WINN had gone to a spring,some three hundred yards from the house,leaving two children,one five years and the other seven months old.Upon her return,image her agony when she found the house in flames and both children perishing before they could be taken out. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 18,1875 LOCAL..Mr.A.ROSENBURG,who is subject to such attacks occasionally,fell in the jury box on Wednesday with an epileptic fit.He has been seriously ill ever since. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 18,1875 LOCAL..CHARLES COLLIER,colored,died suddenly in this city on Thursday.He was taken sick,died,and was buried all within fourteen hours.Before his death he charged he was poisoned by a negro woman because he eat too much.It is certainly a grievous wrong for anyone to eat too much these scarce times.However,CHARLES was not poisoned according to the doctors. THE JACKSON SUN JACKSON,TENNESSEE JUNE 18,1875 A GOOD OLD MAN GONE..ANTHONY CAMPBELL,and old and highly esteemed colored man in this city,died on Sunday morning last after a lingering illness,age about seventy-five years.Thirty-five years ago he belonged to ALEXANDER PATTON,but on the breaking up of that distinguished citizen of the olden time,in 1842,he became the property of MR.JOHN C.CAMPBELL,deceased,in whose family he remained until long after freed by the war.As a slave he was faithful and honest,and throughly devoted to his master and family.As a freedman,he was the same upright,trustworthy and faithful man.Throughout his long life,he was never accused of even the smallest crime,and to his grave he carried the confidence and respect of both white and black.Humble as he was,his virtures were mant and prominent,and his example of quiet and uncomplaining devotion to duty,of steady adherence to the virtues of honesty.(Still a very long article remains,but no mention of family & burial.)
