CONFEDERATE DEAD ASSOCIATION--Your committee appointed to visit the battlefield and report the condition of the remains of the Confederate dead, respectfully submit the following: The remains of the Confederate dead, who fell in battle on the 5th and 6th days of April,1862,lie scattered over an area of about fifteen square miles,on the hills, and in the vallys.Near Mr.PUNT’s house, where there are some white posts put up by the Federals, are two large piles and several smaller ones, supposed to contain about 300 said to be troops from Texas. Many of these ghastly relics are exposed to the light of the sun,the wind and the rain, bleaching under the influence of the elements. In the direction of Fort Wallace,by several settlements, are many scattering pits and graves. Many remains lying on the ground where they were covered with a few shovels of dirt,no graves or pits being dug.Around Henry BARLOWE’s premises are many remains, some in pits and others in single graves. Many of these are exposed, besides many scattered through the woods and fields, around the old church ground, for a mile or two.A great many remains are in pits and graves and in gullies. Many of these are exposed and lie in heaps, mingled with dirt and rubbish, undistinguished and undistinguishable. Many remains lie in disjointed fragments in the woods and fields, having been uncovered by the hogs and the actions of the rains.Near Mr.HOUSE’s farm, two miles from Shiloh Church, are many remains, perhaps 250 or 300,all within a quarter of his house. Most of these are exposed, some washed off by the rains, others rooted by hogs and some never covered at all,or so imperfectly as to be easily washed off by rains, and left exposed to the actions of the elements. From Mr.HOUSE’s to Mr.D.S.MICHIE’s,about four miles west are many graves scattered on both sides of what is known as the old Bark Road. Some of these, although covered from sight, yet there are many bones scattered over the hills and hollows and lying in the woods exposed.Your committee think and believe that about 1000 remains can be easily found and gathered up.Many,of course cannot be found, after the long lapse of 15 years,it would hardly be possible under the circumstances of mutation and change that have taken place on the battle grounds.Committee: J.M.
