DIED--In Brownsville on Saturday,the 22nd; Doctor Stephen S.CHILDRESS. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 2 FEBRUARY 12,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE FATAL ACCIDENT--On Saturday last,Halling S.USHER was found upon the floor of his room,at the residence of John F.SCOTT,near Montgomery,in this county,shot through the heart.The circumstances of his death are not known,but the verdict of a jury of inquest,summoned by T.M.NIVEN,Esq.,after an examination of the body,room,etc,was that `he came to his death by the accidental discharge of a pistol” in his own hands,while in the act of loading it.You USHER was nineteen years of age,and the only son of wealthy parents,residing in Wilmington,NC who sent him to this State about five years ago,to receive his education under Mr.SCOTT. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 3 FEBRUARY 19,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE NASHVILLE;FEBRUARY 11,1832--Several unpleasant and fatal accidents happened among our colored population during the week.A free man was found on Cedar street,frozen to death,probably in conquence of exposure during intoxication.A slave belonging to Mr.Matthew WATSON was killed by falling of a shed under which he was setting. A slave belonging to the estate of the late John CHILDRESS,in contest with another slave on Water Street near the river bank,was knocked down the precipice about 30 feet perpendiculsr and received a blow upon the head of which he died on Sunday last.The negro,Harry,by whom he was thus thrown down,has been tried and convicted of manslaughter,and sentenced to be branded and receive thirty nine lashes. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 4 FEBRUARY 26,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE DIED--In Henderson County,on the 24th December last,Capt.William NEILL,a soldier of the Revolution,aged 90 years.He was a native of Iredell Co.NC. NEGROES FOR SALE--On Friday,April 8th,will be sold for cash at the Dwelling of the late Col.Willis LEWIS,on Clear Creek in Hardeman County,upwards of 80 negroes,they are sold for the purpose of closing a deed of trust executed by the late Willis LEWIS.Henry M.MILLER,Trustee. $20 REWARD--Runaway from subscriber,Leonard SMITH,on the 1st inst.,living 8 miles south of Covington,TN a negro man by the name of George;about 26 years old;dark complexion;spare built;slim face,wears his hair combed very high before;about 5’9 or 10”--he wore off a black fur hat and homespun clothes.It is supposed he will aim to go to some of the free States,or to the State of NC as he was bought from the latter place. Granderson,(his son) is about 18,of dark colour,he has thick lips,small eyes,aawkaed and sulky. Perimus is black and about 30 years,six feet high,he is a good cooper. H.R.LACY,Adm’r. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 18 JUNE 4,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE THE OCCURRENCE--We learn from the Post rider,from Covington,that a murder was committed in that town a few nights since,by John HURST,on the body of Taylor RHODES,a highly respected citizen,of Tipton County.The circumstances attending the transaction are but partially known by our informant--except that HURST struck the deceased a violent blow on the head with a chair,from the effects of which he soon after expired.HURST made his escape. SIX CENTS REWARD,AND NO CHARGES--Runaway from the subscribers on the 12th inst.,and indented apprentice to the Gin making business,named George LUCAS.Said LUCAS is about 20 years old,small statue,lazy looks and more so in actions,of dark complexion and black eyes; wore away a wool hat,light Satinett frock coat and Bangup pantaloons.He will probably try to pass as a proffessor of religion,but people had better beware.William BLACKBURN and John WILLIAMSON. Brownsville-May 20,1831. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 20 (NO.19 MISSING) JUNE 18,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE STEAMBOAT ACCIDENT--We learn from a gentleman directly from Randolph that the steamer “DANIEL BOONE” on the night of the 7th inst.,while ascending the Mississippi in the Canadian Reach,run upon a snag and sank within 15 or 20 minutes-no lives lost,boat and cargo lost. ANOTHER STEAMBOAT ACCIDENT--We learn fron a Swawneetown paper,that the steamers “HUDSON” and “ORLEANS”,a few days since,came in contact with each other,the former ascending,the latter descending the Mississippi River.The boilers of the Orleans were misplaced,and her guard kitchen and wheel house entirely carried away.The Hudson also received injury,but not so material as that of the Orleans.No lives lost. ANOTHER STEAMBOAT ACCIDENT-FROM BOLIVAR PALLADUIM ON THE 10TH--By letter addressed to a citizen of this place,we learn that the “STEAMER HOME”,on her way from Cincinnati to Wheeling,took fire ans so rapid was the progress of the flames,that the passengers had merely time to save themselves,a part of them jumping in the River.The loss of baggage,cargo and vessel is total. A TRIFLING FELLOW is going about the District,who calls himself C.W.RICHARDS,late from London, Renovator,making old clothes new,d & c. The public are cautioned against this rogue,he takes special care wherever he goes to decamp,without the ceremony of taking a formal adieu,or settling up arrears. June 18th.Printer. ALSO a young fellow of decent appearance,by the name of William SMOOT,left from Virginia,pretending to be in possession of a large sum of money,for the purpose of buying land,has visited our District and we are informed,rather imprudently broke into Brownsville jail,from which he has been released and is now going at large.The public are advised to beware of this fellow,as he is a great swindler. $50 REWARD--Runaway from the subscriber,living ten miles South of Somerville,TN Sunday evening,the 29th ulti.,a very likely and tolerably light complected mullatto man,about 5’9 or 10” high,trim made,with a thin visage,about 22 or23 years old.Had on when he ran away,a mixed roundabout homespun coat,a pair of blue casimere pantaloons,about half worn,a black hat tolerably well worn,and a new domestic shirt.Any person delivering said man to me at my home shall receive the above reward with all necessary expenses. June 3,1831. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 NUMBER 21 JUNE 25,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE MARRIED--In this County on Thursday evening,the 16th inst.,Joseph HAINES to Margaret DAVIS. --On the same night, Sandy DAVIS to Lucy HAINES. $100 REWARD,STOP THE MURDERER--Whereas William CONDREN,who was committed to my custody in the jail of the county of Lafayette in the Territory of Arkansas,charged with the murder of John S.GARDNER,having on the night of the 4th inst.,escaped from my custody and jail.Now,therefore,I,Joshua MORRISON,sheriff and keeper of said jail offer this reward.The said Wm,CONDREN is a person about 21 years of age,5’11” high,of slender form,has light blue eyes,rather light colored hair,fair skin,a little freckled in the face and a small mole about the size of a common pea on his right jaw out of which some hair grows,has imprinted on one and perhaps both of his arms apparantley with powder the letters,W.C.; he had on when he escaped a close bodied coat of brown colored jeans cloth,considerably worn,a black fur hat with bell crown,considerably worn,a Marseilles vest with yellow stripes passing around his body,other dress not recollected.5th June 1831 Josh.MORRISON Shff.& jailer of Lafayette County,A.T. ************************************************************************** ************************************************************************** THE SOUTHERN STATESMAN VOLUME 1 MUNBER 22 JULY 2,1831 JACKSON,TENNESSEE DIED--In Shelby County on the 15th ult.,in the 44th year of his age,Col.Thomas PERSON,one amongst the earliest settlers of this District. MR.EDITOR--I discover that in answer to a publication lately made in your paper announcing C.W.RICHARDS (late from London) Renovator,making old clothes new,etc.,-the said RICHARDS has in a Paris paper of 25th ulti.,denied the charge,which I am very glad to learn where he is.I hope Mr.RICHARDS will be kind and polite enough to remit to me $3.75 which he owes me for his board---also the value of a shirt,which he “negligently”took with him.By doing so,I will excuse him for not taking leave at his departure from this place.It is Likely Mr.TRUESDALE would also be glad to received the amount of his little Bill for House Rent,or at least the key for the room rented. P.S.This fellow is decent in his dress apparently,but of “sneaking” look when observed closely.He seems to be very fond of “dogs”,a “little black one” which follows him; he being the big “dog” anf the aforesaid “black little dog’”--it must be observed however that the “ big dog” has the most “doggish”ways.Jackson,July 2.
