Royal street at half after twelve o'clock this, Wednesday, morning, April 5th, 1911, the venerable Mrs Anne Gates breathed her last, surrounded by her children whose unfailing love, tender care and untiring devotion had made her long and exemplary life happy and contented. Deceased, who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McCutchen, was born in Middle Tennessee near Nashville on the 27th of Febuary 1821, but came with her parents to West Tennessee in early childhood. She was educated at Paris, Tenn., which in those early days was quite an educational point, and on December 8, 1835 when hardly fifteen years of age shewas married to W.W.Gates, one of the pioneer newspaper men of the state, and with him came to JAckson to reside in 1842, when Mr. Gates established the West Tennessee Whig. Mrs. Gates was the mother of nine, seven of whom lived to be grown. She lost two children in thier infancy but the late Mr. John W. GAtes who died four years ago and who was himself a grandfather, was the only child that she lost after they had past thier infancy. She was never a vigorous woman but the loving care with which she was tended and guarded kept her in comparatively good health although she suffered and lived through several serious and dangerous attacks and at times was in bad health for long periods. Twenty-five years ago on Dec. 8th 1885 Mr. and Mrs. Gates celebrated thier golden wedding. Mr Gates lived about five years longer and had he survived as long as she they could have celebrated thier diamond wedding as Dec. 8th 1910 was the seventyfifth anniversary of thier marriage. Mrs. Gate was a life long and devoted Methodist and her unobtrusive, yey practical Christian life was an edifying example to all with whom she came in contact. Her latter years have passed so calmly away and her spirit of resignation has been so beautiful that it was like a benediction to visit her and hear her tell of other days and express her graditude to the Almighty for giving her "such good children" and such kind friends. Her funeral which will take place from Mrs. Nance's at ten o'clock tomorrow, Thursday morning, will be conducted by her pastor, Dr. John L. Weber, of the First Methodist Church. She is survived by her six children, namely, Capt. Thomas M. and Mr. W.W. Gates, Mrs. T.T.Butler, Miss Callie Gates, and Mrs. Faniie T. Nance of this city, and Mr. Charles C. Gates of Oxford, Miss. all of whom except the last named have been in constant attendence upon her. She also leaves seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one brother, Capt. J.T. McCutchen who is now the only one of a large family of brothers and sisters that remain. Besides these she leaves a large connection of near relatives and the death of few people would touch as many kindred as does the death of this good woman. The following pall bearers are requested to meet at Alexander & Sparkman's at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow: L.E. Mathis, W.J.Biggs, B.O. Snider, J.W. Vanden, R.Q. McClaren and W.R. Theus. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The obit was found in a book belonging to Mary Frances Chapelle. The book was purchased at a library sale in Richmond, TX.
