He was born in Virginia in 1764. He served under Col. Jack, who commanded a regiment of North Carolina Minute Men. (His officers were Capt. James Taylor, Lieut. Grier and Lieut. Anthony Metcalf, who was the father of William Metcalf. He enlisted in Rutherford County, N. C., when he was about 15 years of age. Three of his brothers joined the same regiment. He stated that (in 1832) his father was dead and his oldest brother and that two brothers were living in Rutherford County, N. C. He moved with his father fom Virginia to Rutherford County, N. C., before the Revolution. After the Revolution he moved to Jefferson County, Tenn., to Knox County, Tenn., to Claiborne County, Tenn., to White County. Tenn., and to Marion County, Tenn about 1824.
