David McCaw, now in his ninetieth year, who resides with his renter on Bear Creek, 3 1-2 miles northeast of Columbia, was made assessor under a .special Act for 1856-7, after which the assessing again reverted to the magistrate. The collectorship was separated from the sheriff's duties about the war time, Wm. C. Allen having been chosen in 1864; W. B. Kannon, 66; W. L. Connor, 68; J. H. Akin, 70; D. A. Craig, 72; A. A. Lipscomb, 74; W. T. Edwards, 76-at which time the duties of collector were added to those of the Trustee's office. J. C. McCaw and others served as Trustees during the seventies; E. F. Stone was elected, 1880; H. F. Fariss, 82; W. J. Strayhorn appointed in 84, when Fariss was chosen postmaster; E. C. Mangrum elected, 84; Fariss again, 88; M. S. Kuhn, 90, 92; J. B. Cranberry appointed, 93; W. A. Henderson elected, 94; Cranberry elected, 96, 98, 1900; Jas. H. Kannon, 1902, 4. Mr. Kannon was born near Glendale, Feb. 1, 1864, where he still owns a farm and does an extensive stock business, being largely interested in raising pedigree jacks. A. F. Thomas, Deputy Trustee, is a native of Bigbyville, and is an efficient bookkeeper and accountant. W. H. Puryear, also a deputy, has been in this county from infancy, and is son-in-law to Mr. Kannon. He was merchandising at Glendale some eight years prior to his appointment in 1902. The collections in the above office for 1904 were about $123,000, which exceeded the duplicate by more than $5,000, showing not only a careful supervision of the taxables, but a prosperous condition of Maury County's financial affairs. County Attorneys.-Until quite recently the County Court employed attorneys only when needed. H. P. Figuers was chosen in the seventies, continuing until P. H. Southall, Jr., was elected, 1887. He continued until his death, in Aug., 1894, when Jas. A. Smiser succeeded. W. B. Greenlaw was elected in Jan., 1898, and continuously since. Coroners.-In this quiet county the office of Coroner is not very remunerative, and was merely nominal before the war, at which time for several years it was held by M. Helm, and later by Mr. Wood. With the exception of a term held by Jas. M. Andrews and one by T. E. Lipscomb, R. H. Guest, Esq., has been Coroner for the past thirty years. Judge Guest was born in Columbia, May 3, 1847. He was educated at Jackson College and at the Athenaeum. Surveyors.-Among the early County Surveyors, Alex. Johnson served about 1815-25; D. C. Mitchell, 28; Jas. W. Matthews, 40; Geo. Nixon, 48; E. C. Frierson, 52; O. H. P. Bennett, 68; J. N. Meroney, 76; R. N. Williams, 80; W. B. Wood, 84-1908. Mr. Wood is a native of this county; taught school for several years; served in the Forty-eighth Tennessee, and was twice a prisoner; served as Register from 70-4; superintendent of the county schools for 79-80, 83-4; and has now been County Surveyor for twenty years. Public Administrator.-Mora B. Fariss was born at Hampshire in 1868, and has resided in Columbia since 1883. He has been connected with the Trustee's office, Bank of Columbia, post office, and Chancery Court. County Health Officer.-Dr. J. L. Voorhies was born in this county Oct. 12, 1860; graduated from College of Physics and Surgery, at Baltimore, in Mar., 1885; located in ^Columbia in 1890, where he has since continued.
