Gordon, Nicholson & Co. —Reliable real estate and insurance firms are necessary in every progressive city; and Gordon, Nicholson & Co. are among the leaders in Columbia, representing some of the largest and best underwriters in this and foreign countries, and covering fire, life, accident, plate glass, etc. A. O. P. Nicholson, Jr., is a grandson of the late Judge A. O. P. Nicholson, who was U. S. Senator from this State prior to the war. T. E. Gordon and J. E. Littlefield come from pioneer families. In addition to insurance, the firm looks after all business in the real estate line to meet the wishes of customers, and are fully abrest of the times. Hendley & Nichols – This firm conducts general insurance at 12 W. 7th. H. L. Hendley, born 7 m. north of Columbia, 1838, spent his early manhood in Texas; returned to Columbia in ’59, and opened a livery. He served in 9th Tenn., C. S. A., was merchant top 78, Register 8 years, and began insurance in 86. A. J. Nichols born in the same vicinity, 1857, was in agricultural pursuits until 85. He was clerk and clothing merchant till June, 1903, when he joined Mr. Hendley. Thr firm represents a number of first class companies. Farrell & Lipscomb, at No. 5 W. 7th, opened insurance, Sept. 1901. They represent the Travelers' Life and Accident, of Hartford; assets, $45,000,000; the Continental National Union, and other good companies. J. K. Farrell, born in New Orleans, May, 1845, located near the Military Academy, where he lost two daughters in the notable cyclone of Nov. 1900. W. H. Lipscomb, born near Williamsport, in 1843, was a farmer and stock dealer near Riverside until he engaged in insurance some 5 years ago. Blocker & Moore.-A. L. Blocker, a great-grandson of the Revolutionary soldier, Gen. Richard Winn, the highest officer of that war, buried in Maury Co., has been looking after real estate interests in Columbia for some time past, and with the present year accepted W. T. Moore, a Maury Countain, as a partner in that line. The firm have met with good success in handling city and county property. W. J. Embry & Co., at No. 1 E. 7th St., has been in business for a dozen years, dealing in timber, lands, and general brokerage. Mr. Embry is a native of this county, and was merchandising in Columbia for many years prior to his present undertaking. T. F. Fleming, a native of Columbia, after four years' service in the Confederacy spent several years in official positions in the courthouse, and for a number of years past has been negotiating farm, timber, and phosphate lands in the Great Middle Basin, which he considers the finest all-round country and climate in the world. John Witherspoon Frierson comes from a pioneer family of Zion. He was born Apr. 21, 1856, near Cross Bridges; educated in the country schools; pursued pharmacy at Philadelphia; and began drug business in Columbia, 1878; later was of the firm of Frierson & Titcomb. He became sole owner in 90; sold out in 94 and identified with the Phoenix Bank, of which he was vice president for 11 years. He has held a like position with the Columbia Cotton Mills for 14 years. In 1898 Frierson & Tucker opened insurance, Mr. Frierson shortly afterwards purchasing interest, and for several years past Mr. Frierson has been alone. He represents the AEtna and Phoenix, of Hartford; Virginia Fire & Marine, of Richmond; Traders', of New Orleans; and other good companies. His many years of prominent business associations have given him a wide acquaintance in Columbia. We illustrate herewith his handsome home, formerly the Mayes residence, on W. Sixth St., one of the colonial structures of antebellum times. His office is in the Frierson 3-story brick block, No. 2 Pub. Sq. The Metropolitan is among the stanchest insurance companies of America. A branch was established in Columbia some ten years ago, and a large industrial business is done in this section. H. F. Crampton, born in Shoreham, Vt., Dec., 78, graduated from Rutland English and Classical Institute, and has been with the Metropolitan for eight years past. He has been Assistant Superintendent since 1901, taking charge at Columbia, June, 1905. W. A. Porter, of Columbia, representing, the Metropolitan, was born in Williamsport, this county, 1878, and in agricultural pursuits until he came to Columbia, 1900. After a few years' merchandising, he commenced with the Metropolitan, 1904, and now holds a good position. His father, S. S. Porter, was born at Williamsport, June 26, 1842; son of Dr. Sam'l S. Porter, who came to that village about 1830, and practiced medicine there for forty years. S. S., Jr., moved to N. Garden St., Columbia, Feb., 1903. (Professional continued. See Index.) Artists. Fielden's Studio.—Photography is closely allied to manufacturing, and properly classified in this department. Callaway Fielden was born at Newmarket, Tenn., Jan., 1863; learned photography at Owensboro, Ky.; and was in the business for ten years prior to locating in Columbia in 1892. He has a suite of well-appointed rooms at 35 1-2 W. Seventh St, and makes a specialty of high-grade work. W. S. Young was born in LaGrange Co., Ind., 1844; was in hotel business for many years; but in 88 learned photography, and the following year located in Tenn. He moved to Columbia, in 1895; has a nice home at No. 9 E. Ninth St., with convenient studio in the rear; and does a large line of work at popular prices. J. C. Roberts, Photographer, was born in Williamson Co., studied photography in Columbia, and opened a studio in Mt. Pleasant, 1902. His furniture and art goods were burned May 28, 1905, but he has replaced the same, and is doing a popular line of work, S. Main near the Mt. Pleasant P. O.
