Grant Nursery.—Under " Progress," on page 13, it has been shown that most fruits adapted to the temperate zone thrive in Middle Tennessee; and to meet the demand of fruit culturists the Grant Bros, started a nursery on the Mooresville Pike, just S. E. of Columbia, in 1885, which has been extended from year to year. W. Y. C. Grant was born at Princeton, Mercer Co., Va., 1858. His father located at Mt. Pleasant, Feb., 66, and died Aug. following. In 1872 the family removed to Culleoka, where our subject was educated at Webb Bros. School. He traveled for a Nashville nursery house for 7 years, and in 84, with his brother, Dr. R. E. Grant, purchased the Fred. Watkins place of 65 acres and started the nursery. In 1898 he purchased Dr. Grant's interest. All standard varieties of apples, peaches, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, strawberries, ornamental shade trees, shrubbery, and roses are raised at the Grant Nursery. Eighteen salesmen visit the principal Southern States; and large shipments are made every fall, with a lighter disbursement each spring. Mr. Grant's motto is good goods at low prices. He shipped 3,000 apple trees to Muskogee, I. T., this year, and sent 37,000 strawberry plants to one man in the same Territory. J. W. Thompson's Greenhouse, opposite Capt. Fussell's residence, on the east side of Columbia, keeps a full line of flowers and plants in the greenhouse trade, furnishing flowers for funeral occasions in winter or summer. The greenhouse business was started here in 85 by D. E. Dortch, and bought by Mr. Thompson in 1900. He also keeps a full nursery stock. Crystal Bottling Works, at 14th and Main Sts., was established by Caldwell Bros., 1903, at a cost of over $4,000, and in the warm season bottles about 1,000 cases per month of soft drinks. They also make cider, vinegar, and extracts. Padgett's Broom Factory, at 42 S. Garden St., does quite a good trade in that line of manufacture, the broom corn being largely raised, in this county and bringing the farmers a good price per acre. The capacity of this plant is over 1,000 brooms per month. Mr. Padgett is a native of Williamson Co., removing to Maury in 1886 and to Columbia in 1893. Drugs. A drug store was started on S. E. cor. of Pub. Sq. and Main St. in the early 40's, and was run by S. W. Frierson for several years. Hawkins & Towler bought the interest, 1847. H. B. Titcomb, who was born in Maine, 1822, and who is still active here, bought the store in 54, and has been connected with it much of the time since. Other partners have been J. W. Frierson, Pope, Helm, Eowen, Beasley, Williams, Rutledge, and J. A. Titcomb. Stephenson Bros, bought the place, Christmas, 1903, aad keep a good stock. They were born in the Zion neighborhood, F. F. having been clerking here for several years, and E. B. coming when the purchase was made. W. P. Woldridge was born, 1855, and commenced as a drug clerk in Columbia at sixteen years of age. In 1876 he and Dr. Pillow opened, a drug store, two years later the Dr. retiring. In 83 he accepted R. G. Irvine as a partner, which continued to 1900, since which Mr. Woldridge has been alone. In 1900, together with McKennon, Anderson & Foster and Dobbins & Swing, he erected the handsome corner which he now occupies. This has a side entrance on Garden St., with stairway to Elks' Hall in 3d story and offices in second story. Mr. Woldridge carries a complete line of drugs and sundries, and his 30 years in business here has given him a wide acquaintance. (Woldridge's corner. See page 67.) Marvin B. Crosthwait. born at Pleasant Garden, Lawrence Co., 1876, was licensed in 1890 as a druggist, and clerked some years for Woldridge & Irvine. Feb., 1900, he opened a store at 11th and High Sts., where he keeps drugs, medicines, and drug sundries.
