Lawyers.—Among early attorneys at Columbia bar were: Peter R. Booker, who owned several plantations and died in Louisville, 1839; Felix Grundy, Robert Mack, Jos. Herndon, Alfred Bach, Geo. Coulter, A. C. Hayes, A. O. Harris, Thos. H. Bentan; David, Thos., and J. B. Craighead; R. C. Foster, L. M. Bramlitt, R. L. Cobb, Allen Brown, F. B. Fogg, J. M. Taylor, and S. D. Frierson, prior to 1825. Between that date and 1840 came Terry H. Cahal, A. O. P. Nicholson, Wm. H. and Jas. K. Polk, Wm. P. and Barclay Martin, Edmund Dillahunty, J. H. Thomas, Walter Coleman, A. B. White, Russell Houston, M. S. Frierson, Geo. W. Gordon, and Gideon Pillow, who was prominent both in the Mexican and the Civil War. From 1840 to 60 came Nath. Baxter, J. Knox Walker, W. S. Rainey, W. S. Fleming, W. F. Cooper, R. G. Payne, L. D. Myers, Geo. Gantt, W. J. Sykes, W. C. Whitthorne, Hillary Ward, A. M. Hughes, T. R. and A. M. Looney (the latter deceased Dec., 1904), W. V. Thompson, F. C. Dunnington, N. R. Wilkes, J. Lee Bullock (still living in the East), Geo. P. Frierson, J. T. L. Cochran, J. H. Dew, N. H. Burt, Wm. Voorhies, H. T. Osborne, and others. As noted under Congressmen, U. S. Senators, Governors, Judges, etc., it will be seen that a goodly number of the above names have served a prominent part in history. Attorneys-general from this district have been: ____ Doud, J. H. Thomas, Thos. and J. B. Craighead, R. C. Foster, Allen Brown, F. B. Fogg, Alfred Bach, R. L. Cobb; L. J. Noah, 65; Noble Smithson, of Giles, 66; J. H. Fussell, 70-86; J. L. Jones, 87-94; Frank Boyd, 95; Tobias Garner, 1902 to present time. Present Attorneys. — Our limited space will permit of but brief mention of the 30 lawyers now practicing at the Maury Co. bar, but a word of identification, should here be left to show to future inquirers who were active here in 1905. W. B. Gordon, born July, 1839, near where he now resides, S. E. of Columbia. He was educated in Jackson College; admitted to practice, 1860; and a year later enlisted in the Tennessee Confederate cavalry service. He was wounded and captured, 1863; and 66 returned to the law practice here. Mr. Gordon served as City Attorney, 1867-8; was Representative to the Assembly, 71-2. Office room, 24 Masonic Building. J. H. Fussell was born in Maury Co., Jan. 12, 1836, his ancestors from N. C. having been pioneers here. He graduated from Jackson College, 55; taught for 3 years in the college; read law with A. M. Looney, Judges Martin and Nicholson; enlisted 1st Bat,, Tenn. Cavalry; later, 1st Lieut of 1st Tenn. Cavalry, and rank of Capt. before close of 4 years. He returned to Columbia 65 and entered law, was Atty. general 1870-86, and has been prominent in the church and fraternal orders. E. H. Hatcher, born in Maury Co.; attended Jackson College; taught at Nashville and Dresden some years; was supt of Weakley Co. schools; read law at Dresden and admitted, 1875; returning to Columbia, where he has since continued in practice. Mr. Hatcher was Alderman, 83-5; president of the Board of Education, 86; and is chairman of the Building Committee now about completing the elegant Maury Co. courthouse. C. P. Hatcher, son of above, was born in Columbia, Oct. 27, 1880; graduated from University of Nashville, A.B., 1898; was at University of Va. for two years; and graduated from the Law Dept. of Columbia University, N. Y., 1903, having since been in practice with his father. H. P. Figuers, born in Franklin, Tenn., Apr. 15, 1849; attended Carnton High School; taught at Gum Springs a year: was editor on Franklin Review, 69-71; Jan., 72, removing to Columbia and becoming a part owner and editor of Columbia Herald. In 75 he formed a law partnership with R. M. McKay, the next year becoming editor of the Columbia Journal; served as president of the Columbia Board of Education, 85-90; as alderman, 96-7. He has been a law partner with Hon. L. P. Padgett for 17 years and a steward in the M. E. Church for 37 years. J. L. Jones, born near Santa Fe, Sept., 48; graduated from Lebanon Law School, 71; and practiced in Missouri for 8 years. He located near Columbia, 1879, and, as a fruit culturist, originated "Jones' Favorite" peach. He is also a breeder and shipper of pedigree jacks. W. J. Webster, born Oct. 17, 1847, 11 miles west of Columbia; spent his boyhood days in rural pursuits. He took a course at Washington and Lee University; graduated in law from the Cumberland University, June, 69; was admitted to Maury Co. bar, Aug. following; and has been over 36 years in practice here. Formerly Mr. Webster owned some fine Jersey herds, and developed two of the four cows that have held the champion cups for yearly records of butter production. W. C. Whitthorne, born in Columbia, Oct., 65; attended Webb's High School; was graduated A.B. from Center College, at Danville, 1886, and from Law Dept. of Georgetown University, 88. He opened practice here, 1891; served as magistrate, 1897-1900, the unexpired term of T. J. Coleburn; and has been since in regular practice. G. T. Hughes, born 1847 in Robertson Co.; attended Stewart College, of Clarksville; read law with J. E. Bailey, Ex-U. S. Senator; was educated in the Law Department of the Cumberland University, locating at Lawrenceburg, Tenn. In 1876 he removed to Columbia, was a partner with Isaac N. Barnett, and for some years associated with E. H. Hatcher, but since 1892 has been alone. Mr. Hughes was president of the Columbia Board of Education, 86-9, and was president of the Maury Natl. Bk. for several years after its organization. He is still a director in that solid monetary concern. J. H. Dinning, born near Gleason, Tenn., Dec. 6, 1871; graduated A.B. and A.M. at Bethell College, 1890; received the B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University, 93, and M.A. in 94; taught six years as coprincipal in Howard Institute, of Mt. Pleasant; and has been practicing in the Maury Co. courts for five years. J. Shelby Coffey, born near Culleoka, Nov., 1875; read law with Gordon & Fussell; and has been in practice here since Feb., 98. Mr. Coffey makes a specialty of corporation law, and has met with good success. Room 24, Masonic Building. Salmon & Turner are both graduates from the Northern Indiana Normal University and from the Cumberland Law School. W. C. Salmon was born in Henry Co., Tenn., 1868; and W. B. Turner, at Waverly, Tenn. The partnership was formed Aug., 97, the firm having rooms over the Farmers and Merchants' Bank. They have stock in some of the manufactories here, and are prominent in the fraternal orders. Thos. B. Forgey was born Sept. 2, 1875, near Timmons; graduated A. B. from the Cumberland University in 1899, and from the Lebanon Law School in 1900. Mr. Forgey was admitted to practice at Columbia in the fall of 1900. He is also a notary at 9 N. Main. Hopkins & McKnight.—R. S. Hopkins was born Jan. 7, 1876, in Bedford Co., Tenn.; attended the Haynes-McLean preparatory school at Lewisburg; was two years at the Lebanon (O.) Law School; graduated LL.B. from Columbia University in 1901; and in Jan., '02, formed a partnership with J. Trim McKnight in Columbia. The latter was born Mar., '78, in Marshall Co.; took the same academic course; attended Kentucky University; and graduated, '02, from the law dept. of the Cumberland University. Office: Nelson Bldg., 9 N. Main St. Crockett Owen was born at Columbia; Aug. 26, 1880; attended Columbia Academy at Battle Ground; and graduated from Mooney School in 1898. He attended literary dept. of Vanderbilt in 1899, and graduated LL.B. in 1902. His office is 35 W. Seventh St., and residence with his father, who owns the former Bishop Otey home at the west end. J. A. Smiser (see City Attorney). W. B. Greenlaw is a native of Maury Co., and in practice since 1891. (See County Attorney.) W. S. Fleming was born near Columbia, March, 1861; graduated from the University of Virginia in 80; and has been in the practice of law at Columbia since 82. He makes a specialty of Chancery Court practice. Mr. Fleming is president of the Columbia Board of Education and of Hay-Long College, of Mt. Pleasant. Office: 16 N. Garden St. Peebles & Haynes.—T. H. Peebles was born in Tullahoma, Mar., 75; attended Franklin and Vanderbilt, taking LL.B. from Cumberland University in '02. R. E. Haynes, Jr., was born at Franklin, May, 81; graduated from Wall, of Honey Grove, Tex.; 1900, taking LL.B. from Cumberland in '03. Office: 281-2 Pub. Sq. John Brown was born Nov., 1880, near Columbia; attended University of the South,-Sewanee; and graduated in law at Vanderbilt in 1902, since which he has been practicing at Columbia. Office: in Brown Block, S. W. corner Public Square, owned by his father. G. W. Hayes, born in Cherokee Co., N. C., 1851, attended the University of N. C. at Chapel Hill, was licensed to practice in 82, and located in Columbia, 83. Besides law practice, Mr. Hayes handles real estate, and in 1901 was elected magistrate; office, 3 N. Main. F. H. Smith, magistrate, in Brown's Block, was born and educated at the Athenaeum, and has mention under educational matters. He was elected to his present position, October, 1902. W. A. Voss, born in Lawrence Co., 1845, served in C. S. A. in 66, located at Mt. Pleasant, moving to Columbia in '73. He was merchandising for 15 years, 9 years on the police force, and Aug., 1902, was elected constable. The Doctors. For hundreds of years doctors have been a necessary part of civilized life. Among those early in Columbia were: Dr. L. B. Estes, born in 1774, served as first postmaster, locating here in 1807, and died in 14. Dr. Depriest came in '09. McNeil & Sansom, in 10. Thos. Whiteside, in 11; died in 16. Dr. McGimsey, in 13. Thos. Brown, in 14, until his death in 34. He was born in North Carolina, and graduated from Philadelphia. J. B. Hayes, born in Virginia, graduated from Phila., married Ophelia, a sister of Jas. K. Polk, and located here, where he remained until his death in 68. J. W. S. Frierson, born in South Carolina, graduated at Transylvania, located near Zion, in Columbia 1824, continuing here until death, 1872. J. S. Law located here in 33; he died in 44 of diphtheria, then known as black tongue. Other names have been Gillespie, Campbell, Hanner, Robards, Mallett, Saudek, and Green. Later came A. H. & W. H. Brown; A. L. Pillow, who came in the early forties, and died July, 1904; J. M. Towler; W. & S. W. Frierson; L. B. Forgey, who was born six miles northwest of Columbia; H. S. Cox; W. C. Dorsett; J. T. & Thos. Spindle; Harvey Walker, who removed to Conyersville, was colonel in C. S. A., and was killed at Kenesaw Mt.; Benj. Harlan; Eugene Smith; J. T. Akin, who was born three miles south of Columbia, and died in 1900; Thos. Buchanan, who moved to Nashville; and perhaps others who have been forgotten. Before 1840 in Columbia and the county were Hillard Myrick, Mervin Daniel, John H. Crisp, P. P. Barbour, John Littlefield, E. H. S. Roberts, and later N. W. B. Wortham, J. H. Frierson, James Leach, J. E. Sealey, D. J. McCallum; 53-64, Jas. McDowell, S. M. Caldwell, J. W. McJimsey, G. & Wm. McNeil, J. S. Hunt, at Pleasant Grove; 24-60, J. T. Greenfield, who later removed to Mt Pleasant, McEwen near Dark's Sta., and others noted under separate village articles. Dr. W. B. Harrison was born in Buckingham Co., Va., July 17, 1831; came to Columbia in 46; attended Jackson College, 1850; and read medicine in 51 under Dr. J. B. Hayes. He graduated from the University of Louisville, Ky., in 56 and located in Memphis. In 61 he became surgeon in charge of Breckinridge's Division Hospital, C. S. A., and at the close of hostilities was chief surgeon of the District of Alabama. He returned to Memphis, from whence he moved to Columbia in 70, where he still continues in practice. Office and residence on Seventh St., West End. Dr. J. G. Williamson was born at Pleasant Grove, this county, Sept 20, 1842. After an academic course, he graduated from the medical dept. of University of Nashville in 67; practiced at Culleoka until 94, when he located at Columbia, and holds office at 37 W. Seventh St. He has served as pres. of the Maury Co. Med. Society. Dr. Robert Pillow was born in Columbia, April 4, 1852, and attended the local academies and Davidson College; commenced reading medicine with his uncle, Dr. A. L. Pillow, in 70; graduated from the University of Penna., Mch., 74, and commenced practice in Columbia. He served on the Board of Education from 81 to 86; was Mayor of Columbia, 88-9; and Health Officer, 90-3. Dr. Pillow established the Pillow Infirmary in 1901, and later purchased the present site on W. Seventh St. For several years past he has been president of the State Board of Medical Examiners. Drs. J. H. & J. W. Wilkes.—J. H. Wilkes was born within 12 miles of Columbia, July 26, 39; attended Jackson College, 1856-9; graduated from Nashville in 62, when he was made assistant surgeon for C. S. A. He practiced 2 yrs. in Ark., 10 yrs. in Bigbyville, and 25 yrs. in Columbia. J. W. Wilkes was born at Bigbyville, 1876; graduated from Cornell University, 1901; and practicing here since. Dr. J. A. Edwards was born in Perry Co., Tenn.; attended Centerville Academy and Hardin College, of Savannah, Tenn.; and took his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee, 1888. He practiced at Centerville for a while; took a postgraduate course in N. Y.; and May, 97, located in Columbia. In 1900 the Doctor took a special course on the eye, ear, throat, and nose in the hospitals of London; and, returning, located in Columbia. He has rooms at 12-14 Masonic Bldg. Dr. W. K. Sheddan, born Sept., 1858, in Blount Co., Tenn.; graduated from the medical dept. of the University of Tenn.; 1887; practiced 20 yrs. at Williamsport; and came to Columbia, 98. Office in Masonic Bldg. Dr. Wm. M. Biddle was born in Columbia, Nov. 1, 1847; reared in Sumner Co.; graduated from the University of Nashville, March, 1871; and practiced for several years in Ark., moving to Columbia in 78, where he-has since been practicing. He is a member of the State Homoepathic Med. Society, and is interested in educational matters; serves as director of the Institute for Girls and on the Board of Education. Office at the corner of High and Eighth Sts. Dr. Hazle Padgett was born in Columbia in 1867, attended the public and Webb Bros. Schools, graduated from the University of Penna. in 92, and located in Columbia. In 1898-9 he took a postgraduate course in hospital work and returned to practice here. Office at 16 S. Garden St. Jno. B. Padgett, father of the above, was born in Williamson Co. in 1826, his father, Henry G., having come from Virginia. Jno. B. Padgett located near Columbia, 1842; was elected County Clerk in 52, holding the books for 16 years. His brother, L. R Padgett, is the present Congressman from this district. Dr. C. A. Forgey was born in Maury Co., graduated as A.B. from academic dept. of University of Tenn. at Knoxville in 1887, and from medical depart, of same in 90. He studied 2 yrs. in New York, and located in Columbia in 1893. Dr. Otey J. Porter, Health Officer of Columbia, was born at Williamsport, this Co., Sept. 11, 1867; graduated from University of Nashville in 89; and practiced in Columbia for four years, at Cross Bridges until 1900, and in Columbia again since that time. Dr. E. A. Timmons was born at Godwin, May 28, 1874; attended the University of Tenn. and Sewanee University; took a theological course at the Nashville Bible School; graduated in medicine from Vanderbilt University in 1900; and located in Columbia, where he has since been in practice. The Doctor has published a work on "Love, Courtship, and Marriage," and is in the lecture field. Dr. Thaddeus W. Stephens was born in the Chickasaw Nation, I. T., in 1872, and graduated from the Meharry Medical College, of Nashville, in 1900, and has since been in active practice. Office: Ninth and Main Sts. Osteopathy.—This practice has rapidly gained in popularity in the past decade, and many persons prefer it to strong drugs. Dr. E. E. McKnight, who represents it in Columbia, is a native of this county, commenced its study in 1900, and graduated from the Osteopathic College at Franklin, Ky., 1902, practicing in Ky. until she located in Columbia, Feb., '04. Office: 17 S. Garden St. Dentists. S. A. Hays, a native of Maury Co., came to Columbia in 1886, and was Sheriff in 87. He is a graduate from the dental department, University of Nashville, and has practiced 28 years. M. P. Merrill was born in Boone Co., Ky., 1857; graduated from Ohio Dental College, 80; and .came to Columbia, 97. His son, W. J. Merrill, was born in Indiana, Dec., 82; graduated in dentistry from Vanderbilt, 1905. E. G. Grant, born at Princeton, Mercer Co., Va., 1855, graduated in dentistry from the University of Tennessee in 1883, and located in Columbia. He was for 18 years a partner with his brother in the nursery business. In 1898 Dr. Grant bought two storerooms in the Bethel Block, and occupied No. 10 N. Garden for his office. He also owns the adjoining 2-story brick building and a fine 100-acre farm 3 miles S. W. of Columbia. He was married, Apr., 95, to Mary P., dau. of John B. Padgett. J. E. Sheppard, born in Columbia, June, 78, after studying dentistry with his father, Dr. W. C. Sheppard, for a time, entered Vanderbilt University; but upon his father's death, in 1901, he returned to Columbia to continue the dental business which had been conducted by the father for 30 years. Dr. W. C. Sheppard was born in this Co., 1844, and W. C. Sheppard, Sr., born in Williamson Co., was also reared in Maury. Dr. Sheppard's office is 10 N. Garden St. S. R. Hardison was born at Lewisburg, 1880; attended preparatory schools in his native town; pursued academic studies at Ky. University and a scientific course at the University of Tenn., locating in Columbia, 1904. Office: 45 1-2 W. Seventh. Bowen K. Bowen was born in Maury Co., 8 miles west of Columbia, Mar., 1870; graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1900; and has since been practicing dentistry. His convenient and well-furnished suite of rooms is over Woldridge's drug store. M. B. Williamson was born in Texas, 1878; graduated from the Meharry Dental College, of Nashville, 1904; and early in '05 located in Columbia. Office: 17 1-2 S. Main. Veterinary. A. O. Kennedy, veterinary surgeon, is a native of Giles Co., and for 16 years past in practice at Columbia. For several years past his office has been at W. B. Matthews' livery. E. Seventh, where he has all the latest hospital appliances for horses and other animals. Dr. Thos. J. Kennedy, father of the above, was born in Va., and brought to Tenn. in childhood. He read medicine in the 20's with Dr. Brown, of Columbia, and practiced near Lewisburg for 50 years. Dr. A. O. Kennedy, son of Thos. J. and Elmina (Lindsey) Kennedy, in 1894, was married to Bessie, dau. of Capt. H. C. and Lucretia (Gordon) Topp. She died in 97, leaving a son, Wallace T. Kennedy. O. L. McMahon alsdo has a veterinary office at 32 S. Main. He was educated at Collins' College of Nashville; and in Columbia since 1901.
