Blount, the latter expelled for misdemeanor July 8, 1797, and Joseph Anderson appointed for that session, Andrew Jackson taking the vacant seat Nov. 22, 1797. Jackson resigned, 98; Danl. Smith appointed; and Anderson elected, holding to 1814; Jno. Williams,'15; Andrew Jackson, 21; resigned and Hugh Lawson White elected, 25; Alex. Anderson, 39; Spencer Jarnigan, 43; Jno. Bell, 47; A. O. P. Nicholson, 59; expelled, 61. Cocke was succeeded '05 by Danl. Smith; resigned, '09. Jenkins Whiteside filled out the term. Geo. W. Campbell, 11; resigned, 14; Jesse M. Jones, 51; Andrew Johnson, 57, until Tennessee seceded-June, 1861. Joseph Caldamer, first Senator after readmission to the Union, died 65, succeeded by Jos. S. Fowler; Henry Cooper, 71; Andrew Johnson, 75; died soon after election; David M. Key appointed, 75; Jas. E. Bailey elected, 76; Isham G. Harris, 77; died July 8, 1897; Thos. B. Turley succeeded; E. W. Carmack, 1901-6. He was born in Sumner Co., Tenn., Nov. 5, 1858; opened a law practice at Columbia, 76: served as City Attorney, 1880-4; promoted to Tennessee General Assembly; served as editor of the Nashville American, 86-8; later, editor of Memphis Commercial-Appeal. Mr. Carmack served two terms in Congress prior to his promotion to the Senate, where he has given a good account of himself. The other seat was filled in 1866 by D. T. Patterson; Wm. G. Brownlow, 69; H. E. Jackson, 81; resigned, 86; W. C. Whitthorne appointed; W. B. Bate elected, holding to his death- Mar. 9, 1905. As he had only entered upon his fourth term in special session, convened five days prior to his death, Gov. Jas. B. Frazier was elected Mar. 21 for the term ending 1911. Gov. Frazier was born in Bledsoe Co., Tenn., 78; admitted to the bar at Nashville, 80; practiced law in Chattanooga; elected Governor, '02-4.
