This handsome place is owned by the Tennessee Fair Association, a portion being under lease by Chaffin Bros. as a breeding and training post for blooded stock. On other pages we have detailed the perfect conditions for growth of fine horses and cattle in this county. Strength of bone and sinew are best given by pure air, salubrious climate, spring water, and the vegetation that comes from natural phosphate soil, where blue grass is indigenous. The far-famed "blue-grass regions" of Ky. can hardly equal Maury Co. in all-round comparison. This county has made many records for prize-winning Jersey herds, and for high-bred horses has no superior. In early days some of the most notable race horses were bred and raised here, and the cross between imported and Maury Co. pacing stock has produced such famed horses as Direct Hal, 2:04 1-4, who, after a season on the turf, in which he won for his owner $25,550, without meeting a single defeat, was retired to the stud by the Hamblins, of Buffalo, N. Y., from whence his progeny have brought higher prices than any other pacers of the same age, Lord Direct having sold for $10,500 at three years of age. Star Pointer, the first two-minute harness horse in the world, and numerous other superb horses, were bred in this county. Chaffin Bros, keep at South Side Park unexcelled service stallions—"The Spy," from Chimes, dam Ormaid; Hal Chaffin, 2:05 1-4, from Brown Hal, dam Bessie McEwen; and Will. Direct, from Direct Hal, 2:04 1-4, dam Bessie McEwen. They also bred and owned Complex, 2:14 1-4; Monogram, 2:20; Direct Hal, 2:04 1-4; Walter Direct, 2:05 3-4, for which they have been offered $12,500; and many other fine colts; besides such celebrated matrons as Ella Brown, 2:11 1-2, dam of Lou Vaughn, 2:09 1-2; Ella Hal, 2:16, dam of Walter Direct, mentioned above; Bessie McEwen, dam of Hal Chaffin, 2:05 1-2, and Hal Hardy, 2:10; Bessie Hal, trial 2:08, dam of Direct Hal, 2:04 1-4; Theddie, dam of Floy Direct, trial 2:14. By reading these figures it will be seen that there are few studs in America covering such a record of fine sires and dams, and Chaffin Bros, are to be commended for their zeal in the improvement of Maury Co. stock and their enterprise in keeping such a notable strain of horses at South Side Park.
