MAURY COUNTY, TN - DEEDS - John S. Thurmond sale of slaves Cary and Hudson --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Maury Co TN Deed Vol 1 Book Z page 374-5 A.T. Gray deed of Trust expanded by J.S. Thurmond Recorded this 3rd day of March 18th and filed Oct 5, 1843. I, John S. Thurmond have this day sold and do herby convey to A.T. Gray his heirs and assigns forever for the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and the other considerations hereinafter mentioned. Two slaves one woman named Cary aged 38 years one boy named Hudson aged 9 years. I warrant the title of the said slaves to the said A.T. Gray his heirs and assignees against the lawful claims of all persons and I also warrant said slaves to be sound, healthy sensible and slaves for life, but this bill of sale is made for the following uses and trusts and for no other purpose that is to say there is some disagreements ______ on A.T. Gray's judgment _______ on the 14th of February lost one for $12.40 cents and cost one for $4.37 cents and cost one for $5.53 cents and cost all in favor of Thomas F. Johnson also one for $126.03 cents in favor of J.F. Osborne with cost and I am desirous to make William King safe in staying the above judgments . Now if I should pay these said judgments at the end of the stay then this bill of sale to be void but if I should not then the said A.T. Gray as trustee after giving 30 days notice at the court house door in writing and at three other public places in the 10th district may appear the said slaves to public sale and sell them to the highest bidder for each and appropriate the proceeds first to the judgment of said offense security to the payment of the above mentioned judgment to and ________ to pay the remainder if any. Thurmond on the 8th day of August 1845 and registered on the 3rd day of September 1845. Received of Isom Sellers the sum of four hundred and fifty dollars for the purchase of a Negro boy named Hutson aged twelve years, this day sold to him the right and title to which slave I hereby warrant and defend against the claim or claims of all persons whatsoever, and I likewise warrant the above slave to be healthy and sound in all respects whatever and subject to no bodily infirmity.
