He was born in Sumter County South Carolina, in 1759. He died in Maury County after 1840. He served in the battles of Savannah, Cowpens and King's Mountain. He married twice; his second wife was Mary McCottery. Among his children was Jane Frierson Mayes, born 1807, died 1851, who married James Morrison Arnell.
