DESTRUCTIVE FIRE; FIVE STEAMERS BURNED--St.Louis,July 30; The Algoma commanded by GEORGE YOUNG.He was seen to jump over-board with his clothes on fire,and has not been heard from.Value of boat,$10,000; insured for $3,000.The safe containing $12,000 was saved,books and papers lost.A mail from the California emigrants was partially destroyed.A box of specie containing $4,000,belonging to MR.SMART of Kansas, was lost.CAPTAIN CLEVELAND,the former commander,was on board the boat and narrowly escaped.WM.FITCH,a passenger,was lost. How many others lost is not known. THE MARY was owned and commanded by GARRISON.She was worth $19,000,and insured for $13,000.She was frieghted with 470 tons for New Orleans.Books and papers were saved.Five hundred hogs and sheep were lost. THE SAN FRANCISCO; CAPT.KENNETH,was owned by KENNETH & CONVERS. Valued at $20,000,insured $15,000.She had on board a heavy cargo from the Missouri River. THE DUBUQUE; CAPT.BEEBEE, valued $12,000.Insured $10,000. THE PHOENIX; CAPT.LEONARD, was owned at Cincinnati by McCOMAS & Co.She had cargo for Cincinnati.Value of boat about $9,000.The passengers lost their baggage and money.The books and papers saved. DIED--In the vicinity of Camden,on the 8th inst.,at 4 o'clock a.m.,REBECCA ANN HODGE,aged 20 years and eight months,the youngest daughter of ELDER GEORGE R.and GRACEY HODGE,formerly of Maury County,Tenn.She was resigned to death,but left numerous friends to regret her loss.Ouachita,Herald. PAGE 2; STATE OF TENNESSEE MAURY COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT FOR SAID COUNTY AUGUST RULES--ELIZA K.GRAY vs LEVIN GRAY and others.Petition For Dower. On motion of Complainant's attorney,and it appearing to the Clerk and Master that LEVIN GRAY, GEORGE W.GRAY, MARTHA GRAY, MARGARET GRAY, SARAH JONES (formerly SARAH GRAY),wife of ____JONES, LEVIN V.GRAY, heirs of MATTHEW GRAY,deceased,and defendents named in said Petition, are non-residents of the State of Tennessee,and that process in this cause cannot be served upon them,etc.The Petition alleges that MATTHEW GRAY departed this life intestate,some time in the month of February 1849,in Maury County,Tenn.,leaving petitioner,ELIZA K.GRAY,without leaving issue,seixed and possessed of a certain tract of land,lying in Maury County,Tenn.,on the waters of little Bigby creek,and containing 220 acres,out of which she prays to have a dower assigned her. OFFICE OF CHANCERY COURT AUGUST RULES 1849.-- SAMUEL N.WILLIAMS vs JAMES R.WILLIAMS and others.In the above cause it appearing that the defendents,DAVID G.GOODLOE, ALBERT T.GOODLOE, HENRY WORTHAM, WINEFORD WORTHAM,and RUSH WORTHAM are non-residents of the State of Tennessee, and that process in this cause cannot be served upon them,etc.August 9, 1849. WILLIAM P.MARTIN,C & M. LAND FOR SALE--On the first day of November,1849 at the late residence of BENJAMIN THOMAS,I will sell to the highest bidder,on a credit of one, two,and three years,the last payment bearing interest from the maturity of the first note,the tract of land owned by BENJAMIN THOMAS,in his lifetime,lying about three miles South of Columbia,on the old Pulaski road.Said Land is finely improved,has on it an excellant brick dwelling house,is well watered and timbered,and contains 222 acres.etc. August 9, 1849.A.W.THOMAS,Exec'r of BENJ.THOMAS,dec'd. *********
