WE UNDERSTAND--that MR.POLK has with-drawn his name as a candidate for Congress in this District. IT IS SAID--that PRESIDENT TAYLOR,in conversation with R.M.PITTS,ESQ., of Pittsburg,remarked that he would favor a protective tariff,which will endure in virtue of not being to high. THE WIFE OF MR.TURNEY--edits the Shawneetown Advocate in his absence. She boasts of having received a score of new subscribers in a single week,all of whom paid in advance.A-hem! Wonder if MRS.TURNEY has any unmarried sisters! CANDIDATES--There are seven candidates for the Legislature in Maury County.Two (STRAYHORN & GANETT) have been nominated by Convention.The Whigs have no candidates in the field. DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE--in this county,JOSEPH HACKNEY in the 72nd year of his age.He was born in Chatham County N.C.,from thence moved to S.C. in 1795 and from thence to Maury County in 1818 where he resided until his death. NOTICE--At a regular meeting of Columbia Lodge 3,Independent Order of Good Fellows,held April 11,1849,DAVID HUBBARD was expelled from all the rights and privileges of the Order for conduct unbecoming an Odd Fellow. LAND FOR SALE--By Virtue of a decree of the Chancery Court at Columbia, I will on the 7th day of May next,at the market-house in Columbia, sell to the highest bidder,on a credit of one,two,and three years, the tract of land belonging to the estate of ALLEN FOSTER,deceased, situated on Carters'Creek,in Maury County,containing about 400 acres.
