This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: "Sarah Hutcherson" ==================================================================== THE MAURY COUNTY INTELLIGENCER VOLUME I NO.51 THURSDAY APRIL 26,1849 WHIG STATE CONVENTION--On Monday the 23rd,according to arrangements, the Whigs of the State met in Convention to nominate a candidate for the office of Governor,and were organized on motion of COL.MUIRHEAD of Wilson,by the appointment of GEN.JAMES L.McKION,of Sumner,as Chairman,and R.H.W.BOSTICK,of Williamson,as Secretary.COL.MUIRHEAD then moved,that a committee of nine be appointed by the Chairman, whose duty it should br to nominate officers for the Convention. The motion being agreed to,the following gentlemen were appointed: JOHN MUIRHEAD,of Wilson; H.L.DAVIDSON of Bedford; THOS.A.PASTEURS of Carroll; A.H.GUTHRIE of Perry; J.A.TINNON of Lawrence; F.K. ZOLLICOFFER of Davidson; GEORGE GLASCOCK of Warren; and W.B.HOFFA of Jackson. The committee,after a short absence,returned and reported by their chairman,the following gentlemen as officers of the Convention: R.J.MEIGS-President; GEORGE GLASCOCK of Warren,JNO.A. JACKSON of Giles,ROBERT WYNNE of Carroll,are Vice-Presidents; Secretaries are: A.M.ROSBOROUGH, WM.WALES, WM.HY.SMITH, JNO.E.GARNER, S.W.MITCHELL. The Convention,being organized,was called to order by the President,and the names of the counties being called,the following gentlemen appeared and took their seats:W.B.HOFFA,Jackson Co.; COL.GEORGE GLASSCOCK,Chatham & Coffee; W.H.HARRISON,J.F.MEDFORD JR.,H.M.BLACK and F.K.BELL,Warren Co.; JNO.TILLMAN,JAMES WORTHAM, WILLIAM HICKERSON,and H.L.DAVIDSON,Bedford Co.; S.W.MITCHELL,Maury Co.; JNO.M.WINSTEAD,THOMPSON CUNNINGHAM, R.W.H.BOSTICK,JAMES A. BOSTICK,DR.J.B.OWEN,SAM'L M.McCUTCHEON,CURTIS STEVEN & JAMES A.CROW, Williamson Co.; WM.W.POTTER,JOHN A.JACKSON A.H.WILLEFORD & JAMES H. CONNER,Giles Co.; (page torn & hard to read rest.) SONS OF TEMPERANCE--had quite an imposing Celebration at this place on Thursday last.The procession,composed of the Grand Division of the State and the subordinate Divisions of this and adjoining counties, with the Cadets,was formed at the Courthouse and marched to a grove near Jackson College.The ceremonies of the day were commenced by the presentation of a banner to the Cadets by MISS ELIZABETH C.JOHNSON, of this place.The bannere was received on the part of the Cadets, by JOSEPH N.WALKER.MR.PEABODY,of Nashville,Grand Scribe of the Cadets of this State followed with an address of length.GEN.CARUTHERS of Lebanon,G.W.P.of the Sons of Temperance came next. *********
