AN AWKWARD RESULT--The Fremont (Ohio) Democrat says that the recent post office election in Republic,Seneca County,MRS.MELTER,a staunch Democratic lady, was the successful. There were four candidates of the male persuasion, whose chagrin over the result may well be imagined. ***************************************** THE GUARDIAN MONTHLY JANUARY 1873 DEVOTED TO FEMALE EDUCATION ON CHRISTIAN VALUES MICROFILM ROLL #199 TENNESSEE STATE ARCHIVES COLUMBIA,TENNESSEE 4TH SERIES VOL.I NO.4 THE FIRST WHITE WOMAN BORN IN KENTUCKY--born in the savage wilds, lived for many years in Lexington. Here she died and she sleeps. Many now living still remember the venerable MRS.RHODA VAUGHN,the first born of the wilderness. She was the daughter of that CAPTAIN JOHN HOLDER,spoken of by BOONE in his narrative,as the man who pursued the Indians who had attacked Hoy's Station in August,1782.CAPTAIN HOLDER was one of the old pioneers' earliest companions. He assisted in building and defending Booneboro Fort; and within the palisades of that noted stronghold, and about the year 1776,his daughter, afterward MRS.VAUGHN,was born. Her earliest recollections were of savages, sufferings, alarms, and bloodshed; and she passed her infant years in the midst of seiges and desperate conflicts. When she grew to womanhood and was married, her father started her in life with a home and servants, but she lost both in a few years by her husband's mismanagement, and after his death times grew worse and worse. At a very early day,she settled in Fayette County, and made Lexington her home, and here she remained and raised her children. One of her sons,Adjutant EDWARD M.VAUGHN,a Lexington Volunteer, who fell upon the bravely contested field of Buena Vista,in 1847.His blood-soaked gauntlets were carried reverently to his mother, and they told at once,to her stricken heart, the same tragic and eloquent story that the armless and battered shield expressed to the Spartan mother in the classic days of old.Other afflictions and misfortunes followed; and destitute and desolate, the brave old woman struggled on through a life not un-freqyently made brighter by kind friends.MRS.VAUGHN lived for some time in the residence lately occuppied by REV.J.D.MATTHEWS,on Winchester street, between Limestone and Walnut. She died, however,at the residence of MRS.SUSAN CRAIG,on the southside of Short Street,in the month of June,1863,aged about 87 years, and was buried in the WHALEY lot,in the Espiscopal Cemetery, where her remains still repose. The only relic of the venerable heroine known to be in existance is a patchwork quilt which she made with her own hands, and gave to a lady in Lexington, who was a friend to her in her days of sorrow and affliction.MRS.VAUGHN was a woman of excellant mind, warm heart, and sincere piety, and neither her true pride nor the beautiful characteristics of her Christian life were abated by her poverty and misfortunes. The fate-star of sorrow, which beamed on her birth, seemed ever to follow her with its saddening influence. She was born when the tomahawk and the torch was busiest; the hope of her declining years died upon a battlefield; and she breathed out her own life in the midst of a terrible Civil War.Her parents helped to reclaim and build an empire; their daughter died without a foot of land she could call her own. Will the State appropriately mark a spot where rest the mortal remains of the first white woman born in the now great Commonwealth of Kentucky? ***************************************** THE GAURDIAN MONTHLY NOVEMBER 1875 DEVOTED TO FEMALE EDUCATION ON CHRISTIAN VALUES MICROFILM ROLL #199 TENNESSEE STATE ARCHIVES COLUMBIA,TENNESSEE 4TH SERIES VOL.II NO.9 PERSONALS--COL.LEON TROUSDALE,represented Tennessee in the National Teachers' Association at Minneapolis,Minn. NEWS FOR MAURY COUNTY CITIZENS--Agentleman of this city who has been south to obtain news of a son in the Confederate Army in Corinth, says that not a single Maury County man was injured in the fight at Pittsburg Landing. This may be good news to the citizens of Maury, but not to our fancy. An Irishman shot at a flocks of birds; "Did you kill any,Pat?" "No," replied Pat, "but I made them get out of there." The Maury men didn't get hurt, but they "got out of there." The same gentleman says he does not see how BEAUREGARD got his men off after the fight,as half were no account and the other half drunk. THE BATTLE AT PITTSBURG--The Nashville Banner of Sunday is permitted to make the following extract from a letter written by an officer in the Confederate Army to a friend in that city. "The fight lasted during Sunday and Monday.Gen.A.SIDNEY JOHNSTON was killed; Col.BATE was wounded in the leg; Capt.TYREE was killed; Major DOAKE killed; Captain NEELY badly wounded; Col.MAT MARTIN slightly wounded; Gov.HARRIS slightly wounded; Col.BATE's Second Tennessee Regiment opened the fight, and suffered severly. The left wing of Col.MANRY's Regiment also suffering very much.An Armistice of two days has been agreed upon for burying the dead. The loss on both sides is very heavy.BEAUREGARD acted as Commander-in Chief.JOHNSTON led the Centre; HARDEE the right wing; and POLK the left.Gov.HARRIS was a Volunteer Aid to Gen.JOHNSTON.FORREST was shot in the back by a prisoner.Gens.HINDMAN and BOWEN are slightly wounded. The 2ND Tennessee Regiment,Col.BATE,came out of the fight at Pittsburg Landing with only 85 men.The telegraphic accounts received at Decatur from the field of battle say that the Confederates have lost 600 field officers. AT DUCK RIVER BRIDGE--Captain PATRICK WALSH with his company of fierce "ZOO-ZOOS" is at present stationed at Duck River R.R.bridge.He is there to prevent the return of General ALBERT PIKE,who "paddled his own canoe" down that stream in the balmy days of the "Confedenacy" to avoid paying a few frifling bills he owed Columbians. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT--We have to "acknowledge the Corn."It was sent to us in a jug by Col.J.B.DODGE,30th IND.VOL.,approved by Maj.Gen.ROUSSCHU.Inspected by Capt.MILLS,and raddled by Major BIGNEY.It is superb-better than two Government blankets these chilling nights. We drink to you all, noble Sirs, you are four bricks. ROBBED BY GUERRILLAS--T.J.HARRIS,Esq.,of Mt.Pleasant, was robbed near his home on Monday evening last,by a party of "respectable" guerrillas.Among them were NEWT VAUGHN,WILL MOORE,and MUM STREET,all of this city.A detachment of the 14th Mich.,coming up at the time gave them close chase, and would have succeeded in capturing them had they not been lied to and misled by an oath-bound "loyalist" named PULLOM. IN CHAINS--The partied engaged in the robberies recently committed in this neighborhood-fourteen in all-were sent to Nashville in chains and under strong guard on Thursday last. The boots, shoes, and leather taken from the store of MR.HELMS,of this city, and the money taken from MR.BRYSON,and others in the county, were recovered and returned to the owners. Not a single Federal soldier,to their honor be it written, was among or implicated with them.A huge crop of thieves has grown up among the people, the legitimate fruits of rebellion. CAPTURE OF MASTER D.B.COOPER--Master D.B.COOPER,who figured in this neighborhood as a harmless guerrilla for the last eighteen months, was captured on Bigby by Sergeant HANEY,of the 50th Illinois on Tuesday last.He was brought in by a detachment of the 14th Mich.,and confined in jail overnight, when he was then sent to Nashville. FALSE--A femenine phlegbotomist of this City writes to protect "Major FITZGIBBONS ill treatment of Col.COOPER,after he was captured and his prisoner," and adds that "that is not the proper way to treat a noble (!!!) enemy." The accusation that Major FITZGIBBON insulted or mistreated any prisoner is false; And as to our looking upon Mr.COOPER "as an enemy," that is a mistake. His case and ours was like that of a mother who was asked by her husband to chastise and quiet the baby.Rolling the child all over her lap, told her husband,"I can't beat him," "I can find no spot large enough to lay my hand on." WE ARE AUTHORIZED--to announce JOHN B.PADGETT as a candidate for County Court Clerk.Election the first Saturday in March. RUMOR--The rumor circulated last week, that Capt.JAMES POLK was shot at Camp Chase, turns out to be,as we hoped it would,a mere rumor. We are glad to hear and report it. CAPT.GID J.PILLOW--A letter passed through the post office in this city on Thursday last from Gen.G.J.PILLOW,dated at the rebel capitol on the 4th last.It came by flag of truce boat. DEATH OF CAPTAIN KELLY CONFIRMED--The noble, gallant, and unselfish youth,CAPTAIN A.J.KELLY,whose demise we announced in our last issue, met his death as was then stated. The influence of DUNC.COOPER and vicious viragos of this neighborhood induced the brave boy to take the unwilling step that cost him his life and brought mourning and sad tears to his family. He was shot through the heart, never uttered a word afterwards, and was buried where he fell.Peace to his ashes. A REBEL SOLDIER'S WIFE GIVES HER OPINION--The Post of Franklin is held by Federal Troops, among which are two companies of the 14th Mich.Vol.,Lt.Col.GRUMMOND is Post Commander.a short time since he dispatched Co."F" to "reconnoitre" in the direction of Charlotte, but instead of an enemy they discovered a friend, who gave them about forty suits of "Confederate" uniforms, any amount of woolen socks and shirts, and also a large quanity of rebel mail matter among which was the following letter.Hear MRS.C.P.FITZGERALD to her husband,a soldier in the army, which is fighting for "its' rights in the territories:" The State of Tennessee,Williamson County, this January 19,1864.Dier Husband I set my self down this evening to right you a few lines and let you know We are all well and hope that when this comes to hand that it find you in the same good health.PED,I have moved back to the same place that I lived at when you came home last.PED.I don't draw no pervison at all now and I have got nothing to go on and confederate ain't worth nothing at all here knohow.PED,I think you have bin out fighting long enough for the damd hellfired rich men for them not to find your family nothing to eat it is enough to make a preacher cus let alone me.I think if you don't come home and go to work for your children that they are bound to starve,so PED,I want you to come home as soon as you can for your children wants to see you so bad.I think it is hard if it is for me to have to worke for your children and you a fighting for the rich men.PED, ABE has come home he was taken prisoner at fort hudson.PED,I want you to take a trot and never stop till you get to the yankeys and take the oath and come home and stay here when you come, for you don't know the lonesom hours that I sit a studing a bout you. He will be buried to-day (Saturday) at 10 o'clock, the funeral starting from the resident of his bereaved mother.Services by Rev.Mr.LEFTWICK. PASSED IN HIS CHIPS--Captain THOMAS WILLIAMS,formerly of BIFFLE's old 9th TENN CAVALRY,but lately guerrillaing it on "his own hook," came into this Post Monday last and surrendered himself a prisoner, satisfied that he had had his rights in the territories.Sensible idea,CAPTAIN TOM.He gave us many a long and weary chase- running after him. "He's done took the oath," and gone home. COULDN'T COME IT--CLARKE WORTHAM,wounded and in chains in a room over this city prison, attempted to bribe the guard on Monday by offering him $40 for a file to be used in loosening his limbs.WORTHAM is one of those bad men recently shot and captured by Lieut DEVEREAUX,of the 14th Mich.,while in the act of robbing a Mr.CRAIG. CAME IN OUT O' THE WET--TOM MOSS,for sometime Acting Adjutant of the late "Lieut Col." D.B.COOPER,came inside the Federal lines here and took the oath of allegiance. It was he who rode his horse to death in November last to inform Col.ALBERT COOPER of Major FITZGIBBON's intended attack upon Lawrenceburg, thus giving ample time for preparation and defense.COOPER prepared the defense, but abandoned his command on being attacked.MOSS was a daring and vigilent scout. ALMOST A FIGHT--After takinf the oath and appearing on the street in front of Headquarters on Monday last,Captain TOM WILLIAMS was set upon by several citizens on whom he had "foraged" during his mountain campaign.Friends of both parties interfered to stop the fight. OBLIGATION--"BUD" DILLON,the industrious "typo," has placed us under many obligations to him for a huge bundle of exchanges. Many thanks to thee. DON'T FORGET IT--We trust our old and distinguished legal friend,C.C.PORTER,Esq.,will not forget to phrenogrophize our columns the elaborate oration of Lieut.KELLY,to be delivered on his arrival at Grand Rapids. BRING IT BACK--The officier who smuggled our dictionary from us to prepare a "few remarks," for his friends in Michigan is thus publicaly requested to bring it back on his return. It was bequeathed to us by the late A.O.P.NICHOLSON,of "Squatter Sovreignty," notoriety, and we intend it for our son, when we get one. LITERARY--The following intelligent certificate of disability given one who failed to come up to the standard of the "finest soldiers in the world," will be preserved as a literary gem: Nashville,September 29,1863.This certifies that I have this day examined CARTER TIMMONS for a recruiet in the 2ND TENN.COLORED REGIMENT and rejected in consequences of confirmed Rumatism and Hemorihoids.W.H.GARDNER Exg.Surgoin U.S.A. REFRACTORY CONTRABANDS--The negroes-we beg pardon!-our "colored brethren," are on a RAMPAGE.They sre now free,"bless de Lo'd," and they need not work. They must enjoy the blessings of liberty, for their "Jubilum" has come at last! To speak without a figure, the negroes refuse to work any more for their old masters or new "friends." They lounge round the country, stealing hogs, poultry, and corn, while the female portion entering or running through the lines abandon themselves to that loathsome vice _____, the opposite of which they were never lessoned nor lectured in. Being human,we have regard for these creatures whose vices have been forced upon them.We would not,if we could, see them wronged, injured nor insulted, but the inexorable logic of facts has long since convinced us that, untaught as they are, unrestrained freedom is inadapted to their conditions.Soldiers,as a general thing, have neither pity or compassion for them, and only beneath the cabin roof of her kind master or mistress can a negro woman find security from that foul degredation against which,in honesty of our soul,we would warn and guard. But the evil is now sown and scattered among them, and they have become so usless to their owners as they have a disgrace and reproach to those who have induced them to set the authority of said owners at defiance.Military orders forbides our interfering between master and slave;but we were in the place of those owners,we would treat the slave as we would our own child. We treat them kindly and humanly, and failing to appreciate such treatment and refusing to do as dutiful children should,we would force them to obediance or force them to leave the premises. ***************************************** THE MAURY COUNTY HERALD VOLUME I NO.8 COLUMBIA,TENNESSEE SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 30,1865 PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY BY: WM.S.BLISS WE CUT THE FOUR ARTICLES AS THEY APPEAR IN THE KNOXVILLE WHIG THIS WEEK: KILLED AND FIGHTING--Since our last paper went to press,THOS.H.WILSON, of Scott County,Virginia was murdered and robbed on Cumberland Street in this city.MR.WILSON had just mustered out of the 9TH TENNESSEE CAVALRY and paid $390. MRS.ROBINSON--a loyal Union lady, living in Beaufort County.N.C. made application for the back rent of a building occupied by the Government.A decision recently arrived from Washington adverse to her claim on the ground that Beaufort was a captured city, and therefore all property, including personal,in the town,is a lawful prize of war. This decision will apply to all real estate and personal in the insurrectionary States. ISAAC WILLIAMS--a Virginian, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment and a fine of $1000 for disregarding his oath of allegiance. THE MILITARY AND CIVIL CONFLICT AT COLUMBIA--The board of officers convened at Columbia to investigate the matter of conflict between the military and civil authorities at that place, submitted the following report, which has just been published in a general order from headquarters: Nashville,Tenn.,August 21st,1865. General,We have the honor to report, etc. We met at Columbia, and after taking such evidence as we could obtain there,we find that the statements of the case as made in General Orders No.9,Headquarters Military Division of the Tennessee,July 21st,1865,are substantially true. That the complaint of trespass and assault and battery, brought before Justice F.H.WELCH against HALEY TROTTER and VIRGINIA COX,colored school girls was frivolous, and ought to have been dismissed,as soon as heard, and would have been, had not these girls been colored school girls. The trepress was merely an attempt to get some plums from some trees on the common near the street, which was participated in by a white girl. The assault and battery was the throwing of a rock toward the plum tree, which took the direction of a white woman who had just come out and ordered them away, and enforced her orders by a stone thrown at the party. The colored girls were arrested and the white girl summoned as a witness against them. The result was after going through the trial, they were held to bail in the illegal amount of $500 each,in fault of which they were sent to County Jail,One was released, the other held under $250 bail. WE find that one WILLIAM GALLOWAY,and active Rebel,by threats and intimidations, induced FELIX G.YOUNG,a Union man,to vacate a storehouse, formerly the property of GALLOWAY,which YOUNG had leased from the Government, through a duly authorized agent of the United States Treasury Department, and that GALLOWAY afterwards sued YOUNG before JUDGE WELCH for the rent while occupying under a lease from the Government and obtained a judgement against YOUNG for $62.50 and costs. In the meantime GALLOWAY had sold the storehouse to one MAYS who under the advice from GALLOWAY,refused to surrender possession to the Government, until obliged to do so by the military authorities.(rest of article to faded to read.)
