Snider of McMinn County, Tennessee Soldier’s Application for Pension Under Class 1, 2, 3, or 4. I, George W. Snider a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee, resident of Niota in the County of McMinn in said State of Tennessee, and who was a soldier from the State of Tennessee, in the war between the Union States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee, entitled “An act for the benefit of the indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States, and to fix the fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions, and fixing a penalty for the violation of the same, and amendments thereto.” And I do solemnly swear that, while in the discharge of my duty in the service of the Confederate or United States as a member of 16th Tennessee Battalion Cavalry, John R. Neil, Colonel R. Maston (sic), Captain I was wounded in the battle or battles of (blank) or contracted the following disease or disabilities to wit: (blank) and that by reason of such wounds and disability I am now entitled to receive the benefits of this Act. I further swear that I do not hold any National, State, or County office, nor do I receive pension or other aid from any other State, or the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any Soldiers’ home, and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family. I do further swear that the answers given to the following questions are true: In what County, State, and year were you born? Answer - McMinn Co Tennessee - Nov 12th 1833 When did you enlist and in what command? Give the name of the regiment and commanding officer under whom you were serving at the date of the wound or disability. Answer – August 1862. Maston (sic) Company, Neil’s Regiment, John R. Neil, Colonel, Rube Maston (sic) Captain What was the precise nature of your wound or disability? Answer – Not wounded What limb if any, did you lose by reason of said wound or wounds, and if no limb, state fully your disability, and if contracted in the service, and is said disability permanent? Answer – None Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wound or disability incurred? Answer – No If discharged from the army, where were you, and what did you do until the close of the war? Answer – I was not discharged until after surrender What was the name of the surgeon who attended you? Answer – Nobody How did you get out of the army, when and where? Answer – I surrender at Kingston Ga. May 1865 Did you give the oath of allegiance to the United States Government? Answer – Yes If so, when and under what circumstances? Answer – I was indicted for treason and (forced to) the Court required it Are you married, or have you been married? Answer – Yes If so, what is the size of your family living together? Answer – Wife and invalid and two daughters What are the respective ages of your wife and children living with you? Answer – 62 years old 26 years and 22 years To what sex do your children belong? Answer – Female Are not some of your children able to support you? Answer – No In what business are you now engaged, if any, and what do you earn? Answer – Blacksmith and earn about $8.00 per month What estate have you in your own right, real and personal, and what is the value? Answer – 40 acres land value $250.00 What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal, and what is the value? Answer – None How have you derived support for you and family in the last five years? Answer – By work in Blacksmith Shop Do you use intoxicants to any extent? Answer – No How long have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee? Answer – Born and raised in McMinn Co Tenn Have you an attorney to look after this application? Answer – W. T. Knox, County Court Clerk of said County, the above named G. W. Snider , the applicant with whom I am personally acquainted, and having the application read and fully explained to him, as well as the statements and answers therein made, made oath that the statements and answers are true. Knox, County Court Clerk of said County, the above named W. H. Buttram, one of the subscribing witnesses to the forgoing application, and who is a physician of good standing, and being duly sworn and says that he has carefully and thoroughly examined George W. Snider, the applicant, and finds him laboring under the following disabilities: Rheumatism of lower limbs effecting his knees and impairing the movements of joints. Also find varicose veins below the knees in each limb. The disabilities disabling him from the performance of any manual labor Witness my hand and seal of office, this 5 day of June 1905 M. H. Buttram MD STATE OF TENNESSEE} McMinn County} Personally appeared before me, W. N. Knox, County Court Clerk of said County, the above named W. T. Lane H.W. McElwee and J. A. Reagan, three of the subscribed witnesses to the forgoing application, with who I am personally acquainted, and known to me to be citizens of veracity and standing in this community, and who make oath and say that they are personally acquainted with the forgoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made to this application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim, and that said applicant’s habits are good and free from dishonor. And W. T. Lane further makes oath in the following facts touching the applicant’s service in the Confederate army: I have known Mr. Snyder since my boyhood – knew of him entering army and return home, only lived about 2 or 2 ˝ miles away. Was with him frequently during the war and knew he was a good soldier. He is one of the best citizens known in this town – W. T. Lane Witness my hand and seal of office, this 5 day of June 1905 W. N. Knox, Clerk Address: “The Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D.C.” 1440204 WAR DEPARTMENT, THE ADJUTANT GENERAL’S OFFICE, WASHINGTON, October 20, 1908 Respectfully returned to the President, Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners, Nashville. The name George W. Snider has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of Company B, 16th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate States Army, nor has any record been found of the capture or parole of a man of that name and organization. The records show that one W. G. Snyder, a private of that company and regiment, was enlisted May 31, 1862, at Athens, Tennessee. On the company muster roll from May 1 to December 31, 1864, (the last on file), he is reported present. No later record of him has been found. No. 7118 State of Tennessee} McMinn County} Affidavit of G. W. Snider – I surrendered at Kingston, Ga. between 1st and 15th of May 1865 but recollection, about 9th or 10th. I got a regular parole, but it was notarized by the (illegible) of my home and (illegible) four or five years ago. Genl Wofford was in command of the command which was comprised of scattered sections of different commands – men up to that time who had refused to surrender. The three men I can recall present, from this section, were Major F. J. Payne (sic) 16 Bat TN Cav Capt Perry (illegible) Darwin of our command, and Off (illegible), all them are dead. A many these who knew of my service and my return are many of my neighbors, who were in service and are living here – but I do not recall anyone now living who was present when I surrendered – If proof of that kind will suffice I can make it fully. W. T. Lane, H. W. McElwee, James Bradford, David McRoberts and many others responsible (our best citizens) will be glad to make the proof indicated if that is necessary – This (sic) facts are the truth. G. W. Snider Sworn and subscribed before the undersigned Notarized this 6 of Nov, 1905 J. B. Hagler Notary Public January 11, 1933 CERTIFICATE This is to certify that the records of this office show that George W. Snider made application on June 7, 1905 for Confederate soldier’s pension to the State of Tennessee and was granted a pension under No. 7118. Following is an account of his service given by him in his application: “I George W. Snider, of Niota, McMinn County, Tennessee do solemnly swear that I was born in McMinn County 1843 and I entered the Confederate service 1862 under Captain R. Maston and Colonel John R. Neill in the 16th Battallion Tennessee Cavalry. I was not wounded and I was discharged after the surrender of the Southern States at Kingston, Georgia, May 1865.” This is signed and sworn to and witnessed by W. T. Lane, H. M. McElwee of the 16th Battery Tennessee Cavalry and J. A. Reagan who state that they knew personally of his Confederate service record. Enclosed you will find a copy of his service as furnished this office by the Adjutant General, War Department at Washington. You will note on this record that his initials are reversed, but affidavits from Confederate Veterans attached to the application were accepted by the Board of Pension Examiners as to this being one and the same man. The records of this office further show that George W. Snider died August 15, 1908. The records also show that Susan Denton Snider has drawn a Confederate Widow’s pension on the Confederate service record of George Snider since October 26, 1908.
