While he was visiting relatives in Burke County, N. C., in the latter part of 1779 he enlisted for six months under Captain William Johnson. In May, 1780, Colonel McDowell sent orders to Captain Johnson for all soldiers that could be furnished horses to march to Burke County Court House and proceed against a party of Tories collected at Ramsour's Mill. He marched as ordered and was placed under Captain Bowman in Colonel Bernard's Regiment in the battle of Ramsour's Mill. Captain Bowman was killed in the engagement. Samuel Blair received his discharge from Captain Johnson and re-enlisted in July, 1780, in Burke County, as a substitute for William Smith, serving under Captain Clark in Colonel Williams' Regiment. He was in the battles of King's Mountain and Cowpens. He was discharged in March, 1781. He re-enlisted and served from July, 1781, to August, 1782, when he was discharged at Chatham Court House. He was in Captain Zabner Mask's, Company and Colonel Roger Griffin's Regiment. After he left the service he returned to Virginia and lived in Shenandoah and Botetourt Counties.
