Hardin Mortgage Reg'd 11th Jan'y 1842 Know all men by these presents that I John Melton have this day bargained sold and delivered unto Wm Swain the following property viz: two cows, one year old heifer, twenty five head of hogs, thirteen head of sheep, one bed and furniture, one bedstead, one large pot and one Sorrel mare to have and to hold to him and his heirs for ever. [Now witness?] the above obligation is such that whereas Wm S. Wisdom holds three notes on said Melton for thirty dollars each one of which will be due the 25th of Dec.r next, one the 25th Dec. 1843 and one the 25th Dec. 1844 and whereas Jordan Hardin is security to said notes and said Melton being desirous to secure said Hardin doth agree that if he does not pay said notes when they become due the above named Wm Swain as trustee shall after giving ten days notice in the town of Purdy & two other public places sell to the highest bidder the aforesaid property and apply all proceeds as follows first to satisfy the expenses of the [same?] secondly to satisfy said debts and thirdly (if any remains) to pay it over to said Melton, it is understood that the above property remain in the hands of said Melton until called for by the trustee this 11th January 1842 John Melton [seal] State of Tennessee McNairy County Personally appeared before me J.R.
