Sweat, deceased Private, Company G, 6th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry Application # 278.766; Certificate # 296.935 Claimant: Terrell Sweat, father of James C. Sweat Declaration for an Original Pension of a Father dated 4 Oct 1880 Terrell Sweat, age 72 and a resident of Falcon, TN, declared that he was the father of James C. Sweat who enlisted on 22 Sep 1862 and died near Bethel Springs on 24 Oct 1862. He also declared that he was married to the mother of said son at McNairy County, TN in Nov 1828 by S. D. Pace, J.P. The mother of said son died on 24 Nov 1877 in McNairy County, TN. Treasury Department Report dated 17 Apr 1883 (in response to a request from the Commissioner of Pensions for evidence of "celibacy and sonship of the soldier, identity of the claimant as father of soldier, and death of mother") The report included the following: .) On 9 Mar 1866, Terrell Sweat, father of James C. Sweat, was allowed $100 under Bounty Act dated 22 Jul 1861. He also received arrears of pay to 24 Oct 1862. .) Terrell Sweat filed an application dated 5 Oct 1863 stating that he was the father of said soldier, and that his son died unmarried leaving no wife or child. Samuel D. Hanna and John Graham witnessed that the claimant was the father of James C. Sweat and to the soldier's celibacy. .) On 1 Aug 1868, Terrell and Louisa Sweat, parents of James C. Sweat, were allowed $100 under Bounty Act dated 28 Jul 1866. .) Terrell and Louisa Sweat filed an application dated 13 July 1867 stating they were the parents of said soldier, and that their son died unmarried having no wife or child. William Chandler and Jno Woods witnessed that they knew the claimants to be the parents of said soldier and to the soldier's celibacy. .) There was no evidence of the mother's death on file. Claimant's Testimony dated 21 May 1883 State of Tennessee, McNairy County Terrell Sweat swore on oath that his son James C. Sweat, deceased, enlisted in Company G, 6th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry in 1862 and was taken sick in camp at Bethel Springs, TN. No surgeons were attached to the command, so James was removed to his father's home and attended by Dr. E. Thompson until he died. Dr. Thompson had since died and he could not obtain the testimony of any physician in the case. Affidavit of Terrell Sweat dated 21 May 1883 Terrell Sweat, age 75 and a resident of Falcon, TN, declared "James C. Sweat was a son of mine & that his occupation up to time of enlistment in said 6th Reg - Tenn Cavalry was that of a farmer & carpenter. That he was a part of my help, and that I consider his services reasonably worth thirteen dollars per month". He also stated that Dr. Ephram Thompson "waited on him while sick" since the Regiment did not have any surgeons and that he thinks his bill was about fifteen dollars. Comrade's Testimony of W. I. Sweat 21 May 1883 W. I. Sweat of Falcon, TN, formerly a Private in Company G, 6th Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, testified that James C. Sweat was "in good bodily health and condition" at the time of his enlistment. He also testified that James was taken sick with flux and piles on or about 12 Oct 1862 and died about two weeks thereafter. [Note: Willis I. Sweat was the brother of James C. Sweat.] Comrade's Testimony of Henry A. Wolf dated 22 May 1883 Henry A. Wolf of Purdy, TN, formerly a Private in Company G, 6th Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry, testified that James C. Sweat was taken sick with flux and piles on or about 12 Oct 1862 and died about two weeks later. Proof of Disability dated 2 Oct 1884 State of Tennessee, McNairy County J. L. W. Boatman, age 54, and W. I. Sweat, age 43, swore that J. C. Sweat volunteered as a Private in Company G, 1st West Tennessee Regiment of Cavalry Volunteers and died at home on or about September 1862 of flux. James was "taken down with flux and carried home by his father Terrell Sweat, and by consent of the Col. Fielding Hurst, and only lived a short while after he was carried home". Affidavit of W. I. Sweat dated 8 Dec 1887 W. I. Sweat testified under oath that "James Sweat was a member of the 6th Tenn U.S. Cav Vol. and was taken sick with flux and piles while in camp at Bethel Springs Tenn and was sent home for care and attention and lay sick for some time but on Nov 24th 1862 he died. He was borned Aug 12th, 1839, he never was married but lived at home with his Father and Mother until he went into the Army and prior to that time he worked to support his Father and Mother. His mother died Nov 26, 1877. He owned to property nor had no income only as he worked for it which went to support his Parents as they were feeble and had no income owned no land and but little personal effects." Affidavit of J. W. Clifton dated 6 Feb 1888 State of Tennessee, County of McNairy J. W. Clifton, resident of Falcon, TN, testified that James C. Sweat was a son of Terrell Sweat, and that he knew him before the war and until he died. He also testified that James was a member of the 6th Tenn U.S. Cav Vol., that he was taken sick at Bethel Springs, and that he died in the fall of 1862. Adjutant General's Report on H. A. Wolf, W. I. Sweat, and J. L. W. Boatman dated 5 Jun 1888 The report substantiated the following: .) J. L W. Boatman, 1st Lieutenant of Company G, 6th Regiment, Tenn. Cavalry Volunteers enrolled 25 Aug 1862 at Bethel, TN. .) W. I. Sweat, Sergeant of same company, enrolled 15 Sep 1862 at Bethel, TN. .) Both men were recorded on the muster roll of 6 Mar 1863 at Bolivar, TN (this was the first muster roll of the company on file). .) Henry Wolf, Private in Company D of the same Regiment, enrolled 15 Sept 1862 at Bethel, TN. The muster roll of Company D, dated 15 Nov 1862 at Bolivar, TN (the first one on file) reports him present. He was transferred to Company G on 18 Mar 1863. Declaration for Dependent Father's Pension dated 6 Apr 1891 Terrell Sweat, age 76 and a resident of Falcon, McNairy County, TN, swore he was the father of James C. Sweat and that his son died at his home on 25 Oct 1862 from the effects of flux. Terrell was married to the mother of said son on 17 Nov 1828 at home by Abram Murry, and she died on 15 Nov 1877 at home in McNairy County. Terrell declared that he was without means of support and was living in the County Poor House. War of the Rebellion - Dependent Father Pension dated 1 May 1891 Terrell Sweat was awarded a pension of $12 per month commencing 1 May 1891. Notations included: .) James C. Sweat enlisted 15 Sept 1862. .) James C. Sweat died 24 Oct 1862. .) His mother died 26 Nov 1877. Affidavit of Dr. J. L Smith dated 16 Jun 1891 State of Tennessee, McNairy County Dr. J. L. Smith, age 47 and a resident of Falcon, TN, declared that Terrell Sweat is "an inmate of the County Poor House and has no other means of support, owns no property - and has no income from any source whatever, and that his physical disabilities are of a permanent character, and of such a nature that he is entirely disabled from performing manual labor at all, and I am confident his disabilities are not the result of his own vicious habits, but is the result of old age and general infirmities." Affidavit of Thomas R. Sanders dated 16 Jun 1891 Thomas R. Sanders, age 34 and a resident of McNairy County, declared that "he is keeper of the McNairy County Poor House and that the claimant Terrell Sweat is an Inmate of the same.Terrell Sweat was put in the County Poor House because he had no means of support, he is old and broke down both in health and finance, is not able to perform manual labor at all, and has no income from any source, does not own any property of any kind but is altogether dependant upon the County for sustenance, and I am satisfied his physical condition is of a permanent character, and his present disabilities are not due to his own vicious habits."
