TN revolutionary War Pension Allen Swett - Sweat Revolutionary War Pension Papers - Allen Swett (Sweat) and Nancy Swett File W19 Transcribed by Pamela Pearson; October 2003 [Document dated 6 Jun 1818] District of North Carolina On this sixth day of June 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the United States for the District aforesaid, personally appeared Allen Swett, aged about fifty-two years, resident in Wake County in the said District, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War". That in the year 1782, in Halifax County in the said District, the said Allen Swett enlisted as a soldier in the company commanded by Captain Becoats of the tenth Regiment, in the North Carolina line, on the Continental establishment, in the Revolutionary War, for eighteen months; that he continued to serve in the said corps until the end of the said war, against the common enemy, when he obtained his furlough at Hedley's Point near Charleston, South Carolina; which furlough has been destroyed by fire; he was in no battle - and he is in reduced circumstances & stands in need of the assistance of his country for support. Sworn to & declared before me the day & year first aforesaid. H. Potter, DJUSNC [Document dated 6 Jun 1818] No Carolina District Francis Jones maketh oath that he was well acquainted with the above named Allen Swett in the army of the United States during the Revolutionary War, & knows that the said Swett served in the tenth Regiment (& he thinks in Capt. Becoets's company) of the North Carolina line, the Continental Army in said war - that he saw him in service, particularly, at Ashby Hill in So Carolina; but how long he continued in service, the deponent cannot say - Deponent saith however that to the best of his knowledge he left the said Swett in the said service, when the deponent left the army in the capacity of servant to an officer. Sworn to before me the 6th June 1818 - H. Potter, DJUSNC [Document dated 6 Jun 1818] State of North Carolina, Secretary's Office 6th June 1818 I William Hill Secretary of State in and for the State aforesaid do hereby certify that it appears from the muster- role in this office that Allen Swett enlisted as a private soldier in the 10th Regiment of the North Carolina Continental line in the Revolutionary War in the year 1782 for the term of 18 months. Given under my hand at office in Raleigh the date above. Wm Hill [Document dated 17 Jun 1818] District of North Carolina Ascum Scott maketh oath that he has been well acquainted with the aforesaid Allen Swett from his infancy up; that about the latter part of the Revolutionary War, the said Swett, while living on deponent's plantation on Roanoke in the State of North Carolina, entered the service of the United States, in the said war, and deponent believes it was the Continental service, in the North Carolina line, for eighteen months, & went off with the army, and returned to his home about twelve months after, and after the treaty of peace; and deponent doth confidently believe that the said Swett did serve in said Continental service, against the common enemy, until the end of the said war. And further this deponent sayeth not. Sworn to before me the 17th June 1818. H. Potter, DJUSNC [Document dated 3 Sep 1818] I Henry Potter, District Judge as aforesaid, do certify that it appears to my satisfaction that the said Allen Swett did serve in the Revolutionary War, as stated in the preceding declarations, against the common enemy, for the term of nine months, on the Continental establishment, and that he is in reduced circumstances & stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and I now transmit the proceedings & testimony taken & had before me, to the Secretary for the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned Act of Congress. Potter, DJUSNC [Document dated 18 Jan 1819] Peter Becoats Capt. 2nd North Carolina War Department Revolutionary Claim I certify that in conformity with the law of the United States of the 18th of March 1818 Allen Swett late a private in the Army of the Revolution is inscribed on the Pension list roll of the North Carolina Agency at the rate of Eight Dollars per month to commence on the sixth day of June One Thousand Eight-hundred and Eighteen. Given at the war office of the United States this Eighteenth day of January One Thousand Eight-hundred and Nineteen. J. C. Calhoun Secretary of War [Document dated 4 Oct 1820] State of North Carolina, Wake County Superior Court Autumn Term 1820 On this 4th day of Oct 1820 Personally appeared in open Court it being a Court of records, Allen Swett aged 55 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the acts of Congress of the 18th March 1818 and the first May 1820 - That he the said Allen Swett enlisted for the term of 18 months in the month of June in the year 1780 or 81 in the county of Halifax in the State of North Carolina in the company commanded by Capt. Peter B. Coats in the regiment commanded by Col. Archibald Lyttle being the 2nd Regiment in the line of the State of North Carolina on the Continental Establishment - that he continued to serve in the P. Corps until he was honorably discharged on or about the month of July at Charleston in South Carolina having continued in the service on or about thirteen months. And in pursuance of the Act of the 1st May 1820, I Allen Swett do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of any of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th March 1818 & that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income nor means of support except what is allowed me as a pension under the act of Congress of the 18th March 1818 which I have received from the Bank of the United State at Fayettesville by virtue of my pension certificate being No. 5440, having received as yet only one payment due on the 4th March 1819 & there still remains 2 payments due under the act of 18th March 1818 and one under the act of 1st May 1820 - that is up to the 4th Sept 1820. And also what is contained on the following schedule to wit - Schedule State of North Carolina, Wake County On this 4th day of October 1820 Personally appeared in open Court being a court of Records Allen Swett of said County aged 55 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War in the 2nd Regiment in the company commanded by Capt. Peter B. Coats of the North Carolina line and that his original declaration was made before Judge Potter on the 6th day of June 1818 and having received only one payment by virtue of his certificate No. 5440 as aforesaid and I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities or contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereunto annexed & by me subscribed - To wit No real or personal estate of any kind 1 small mare - valued at by the Court $30 1 cow, 1 yearling 12 1 set knives & forks . 75 1 small pot & oven 2 $44.75 And that he is himself aged 55 years & his wife Nancy 48 yeas & has seven children in his family to wit - John aged 18 years, Hezikiah 14, Terrell 12 (sons), Cary 10 years, Aggy 7, Candis 5 and Hillsman 2 years of age. That they are all his family - and his employment is farming upon rented land & being infirm he is unable to pursue it so as to obtain a competency for himself & family nor has he any person other than his family to assist him or contribute to his assistance. Hinton, CSC [Document dated 7 Oct 1820] State of North Carolina Wake County I Ransom Hinton Clerk of the Superior Court of Law for the County of Wake do hereby certify that the foregoing oath and the schedule thereto annexed are truly copied from the records of the said court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of the said court that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid Schedule is forty four dollars & seventy-five cents. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand & affixed the seal of the said Court this 7th day of October AD 1820. R. Hinton, CSC [Document dated 23 Dec 1826] Application for a Transfer State of Tennessee, Lincoln County On this 23rd day of December 1826 before me the subscriber, a justice of the peace for the said County of Lincoln, personally appeared Allen Swett, who on his oath declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Capt. Peter Bacot in the Regiment commanded by Col. Archibald Lyttle in the service of the United States, that his name was placed on the pension roll of the State of North Carolina from whence he has lately removed; that he now resides in the State of Tennessee in the said County of Lincoln where he intends to remain and wishes his pension to be there payable in future (at Nashville Tennessee) and that his reasons for moving from North Carolina to Tennessee were that he thought that as it was a new country it would suit him better than to remain in North Carolina. Wm Emiston, Justice of the Peace [Document dated 23 Dec 1826] State of Tennessee, Lincoln County This day personally appeared William Swett before me William Edmiston one of the acting justices of the peace in and for said County and made oath in due form of law that he is well acquainted with Allen Swett who has made the foregoing affidavit, and that he well knows that he was placed on the pension roll of North Carolina, and that he believes from his own knowledge that the foregoing affidavit of the said Allen Swett is true. William Sweat {his signature} Sworn to & subscribed before me this 23rd December 1826 Wm Edmiston, Justice of the Peace [Note: William Swett was the oldest son of Allen Swett and Nancy Evins] [Document dated 23 Dec 1826] I William Edmiston a Justice of the Peace for Lincoln County (Tennessee) do certify that William Swett who made the foregoing affidavit of the identity of Allen Swett is a man of veracity as he believes. 23rd Dec. 1826 Wm Edmiston [Document dated 23 Dec 1826] State of Tennessee, Lincoln County I Brin M. Garner Clerk of the Court of Pleas of Quarter Sessions for the said County do certify that William Edmiston before whom the foregoing affidavits of Allen Swett and William Swett were made and who has certified the character of William Swett is now and then was an acting justice of the peace in and for said County and that his signature thereto is in his own hand writing. In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand & affixed the seal of said Court at office in Fayettesville this 23rd Dec A.D. 1826 Brin M. Garner, Clk [Document dated 20 Mar 1845] Raleigh N Carolina, March 20th 1845 To Maclin Cross Esq. Sir your letter requesting a transcript of the Marriage Bond and license of Allen Swett to Nancy Evans I send you a copy certified of all the proceedings that I can find connected with the marriage & have stated in the certificate that many other bonds of about the same date are very imperfect. I hope that this may answer your purpose if so & it will be of any benefit to a Revolutionary Soldier's wife I shall consider myself amply paid. Yours respectfully & truly, W. A. High P.S. The license was never filed in the clerk's office. -- - a marriage as in other states and the only evidence that can be had here is a copy of the Marriage Bond. [Document dated 20 Mar 1845] State of North Carolina, Wake County I James T. Marriott Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the County of Wake & State aforesaid do hereby certify the within to be a copy of a Marriage Bond filed in this office among other Marriage Bonds as also many others on file are in the same condition partly blank of and about the same date and that the within (of which I certify this to be a copy) is endorsed on "Marriage Bond - Allen Swett to Governor". Signed Sealed & Delivered in the presence Theo Hunter Jr. Allen Swett {his mark} Reuben Evins {his mark} Nancy Evins - 21st day Jany 1792 [Note: Alexander Martin was the Governor of North Carolina at the time of the bond (1792)] [Document dated 29 Apr 1845] Declaration. In order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th July 1838 entitled "An Act granting half pay and Pensions to Certain Widows" State of Tennessee, McNairy County On this 29th day of April 1845 personally appeared before this Honorable Circuit Court of McNairy County State of Tennessee, Nancy Swett a resident of said County aged seventy three years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 entitled "An Act grating half pay and pensions to certain widows". That she is the widow of Allen Swett who was a private in the Army of the Revolution in Captain Peter Becoats Company and Second North Carolina line, and who was admitted as a pensioner under the Act of Congress passed 18th of March 1818 and is inscribed on the Pension List Roll of the North Carolina agency at the rate of Eight dollars per month. The service rendered by the said Allen Swett will fully appear by reference to his Declaration now on file in the Office of the Secretary of War. She further declares that she was married to the said Allen Swett on the twenty-third day of January in the year Seventeen Hundred and Ninety-Two, that her husband the aforesaid Allen Swett died on the Twenty-ninth day of March in the year One Thousand Eight-hundred and forty-four, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January Seventeen Hundred and Ninety four viz at the time above stated. Given under my hand the day and date above. Sworn to and subscribed in Open Court on the day and year above written. Nancy Swett {her mark} A. Kincaid, Clerk, McNairy Circuit Court [Document dated 29 Apr 1845] State of Tennessee, McNairy County On this the 29th day of April in the year of Our Lord 1845 personally appeared before the Honorable the Circuit Court now sitting for said county, Dollarson Swett, who is a respectable person, aged forty-seven years old and made oath in due form of law that Nancy Swett the present applicant for a pension and Allen Swett late of said county did live together as man and wife ever since my recollection, and that Nancy Swett was Nancy Evins before her marriage to Allen Swett, and that they were married as I have always been informed and believed in Wake County State of North Carolina, and that Allen Swett the present applicants' husband died in McNairy County State of Tennessee on the 29th day of March 1844. Kincaid, Clerk, McNairy Circuit Court [Note: Dollarson Swett was the son of Allen Swett and Nancy Evins] [Document dated 29 Apr 1845] State of Tennessee, McNairy County On this the 29th day of April in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight-hundred and forty five, personally appeared before the Honorable Circuit Court now sitting for said county, James Magee and Archibald W. Murry, two respectable persons, and made oath in due form of law that they were well acquainted with Allen Swett in his lifetime, and his wife Nancy Swett, that they lived together as man and wife during our acquaintance with them which was a great many years, that said Nancy Swett is now a widow and has remained a widow ever since the death of her husband. We are also well acquainted with Dollarson Swett, he is a man of character and standing in said county. Given under my hand - A. W. Kincaid Clerk of the Circuit Court for said county to hereby certify that the foregoing contains a full true and correct statement of Nancy Swett for a pension in our said court. Dunlap Judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit in the State aforesaid, which circuit includes McNairy County do hereby certify that A. I Kincaid whose name appears signed to the foregoing certificates is now and was, at the time of signing the same clerk of the circuit court for McNairy County. Edward Esq, Washington City [Document dated 1 Sep 1848] Declaration In Order to Obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress of 2nd February 1848 entitled "An Act making further provision for surviving widows and soldiers of the Revolution". State of Tennessee, County of McNairy On this first day of September 1848 personally appeared before me the undersigned an Acting Justice of the peace in and for said county Nancy Swett with whom I am personally acquainted, a resident of McNairy County in the State of Tennessee aged Eighty years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed on the 2nd February 1838 granting pensions to widows or persons who served during the Revolutionary War, that she is the widow of Allen Swett who was a private in the 2nd Continental North Carolina line commanded by Captain Peter Becoats, that she was admitted as a pensioner under the Act of Congress passed 17th June 1844 and received an annual pension of thirty six dollars and sixty six cents. Adams, Justice of the Peace [Document dated 1 Sep 1848] State of Tennessee, McNairy County Be it known that on this first day of September 1848 before the undersigned an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county, duly authorized by law to administer oaths personally appeared Nancy Swett with whom I am personally acquainted and acknowledged the foregoing declaration to be her act and deed for the use and purposes therein contained. Witness my hand and seal this 1st day of Sept - 1848. Geo. G. Adams, Justice of the Peace [Document dated 23 Sep 1848] State of Tennessee, McNairy County I A. A. Sanders Clerk of the County Court for said county do hereby certify that Geo. G. Adams Esq. is now and was at the time of signing the same an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county duly elected, commissioned and qualified, agreeable to law and is authorized by law to administer oaths, that full faith and credit should and ought be given to all of his official acts as such. Sanders, Clk [Document dated 8 Sep 1882] East Carondelet, Saint Clair Co., Ill. To the Hon. United States Pension Agt, Washington D.C. We would like to have some information in regard to a pension that was drawn by my grandfather from the Revolutionary War. His name was Allen Sweat. He drew a pension & was to get some land also. He died & all stopped & now my mother wants it looked up. If you will write me in regard to it and what it will cost to get it if it can be got I will pay all charges. Also the necessary measures to be taken in the ---. I think he served three or four years. By informing me of the above facts will greatly oblige. Yours truly, Geo. W. Gray [Noted on pension card] 1882 Sept 8. G. W. Gray - no data given to identify this case with Allen Sweat stated in his letter. Sent circular; children cannot prosecute for pension - also that children must be under 21 years March 3 1855 to obtain bounty land for Rev. service. [Note: Candis, the daughter of Allen Swett and Nancy Evins, married Ward Gray. She is the "mother" referred to in the above letter.] [Miscellaneous Notes on Pension Cards] ú Allen Swett inscribed on the Roll of North Carolina at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence on the 6th of June 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 18th of Jany 1819 and sent - Henry Potter Esq, Raleigh, North Carolina. ú The pension agent erroneously reported Mr. Sweat dead [no date given]. ú Mem. 1845. Allen Swett appears on the rolls of the N.C. line as having enlisted in Augt. 82 and discharged in July following making 11 months. ú Nancy Swett, widow of Allen Swett, who was a private in the N.C. line, inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 36 Dollars 66 cents per annum, to commence on the 29th day of March, 1844. Certificate of Pension issued the 8 day of July 1845 and sent to Maclin Cross, Purdy, Tennessee. Recorded in Book A, Vol. 2, Page 197.
