Documents include: 1. Cover letter from R. W. Thompson, Atty for claimant, of Purdy, Mcnairy Co, TN dated 14 May 1873. 2. Declaration of Widow dated 10 May 1873. Martha Stanphill age Sixty-six [66] years [born ca 1807], states could not remember name of Capt. Her husband served under on Regiment/Brigade. States served two 4-months terms under Gen. Andrew Jackson and that he was from Franklin Co, TN and that she received two Land Warrants for her husband's services; one at Winchester, TN the other at Reynoldsburg, IL. States she was married 17 October 1811 by Haman Baily, M.G. at Franklin Co., TN and her husband died near Cape Girardeau, MO 7 May 1850. 1873, was living about 11 Miles from Purdy, TN on the Wagon Road from Purdy, TN to Saltillo, TN. Jacob D. Droke and Eli George signed attesting they were present when she signed , and stated they were acquainted with her. [NOTE: Either Martha's dob of 1807 or date of marriage 1811 must be an error. mlj] 3. Affidavit of Eli George dated 10 May 1873 stating he has been acquainted with Mrs. Martha Stanphill for more than 30 years and knew Cornelius and Martha Stanphill as man and wife, and has examined the family record, and knows they were married 17 October 1811. Eli George's Post Office address is Adamsville, McNairy Co, TN. 4. Affidavit dated 10 May 1873 of Jacob D. Droke, Coffee Landing, Hardin Co., TN, age 49 [born ca 1824] states he is acquainted with Martha Stanphill for more than 32 years, and was intimately acquainted with her deceased husband Cornelius Stanphill who resided in Lincoln County, TN in his lifetime. States Cornelius died in Cape Girardeau, MO 7 May 1850, and that he went from Hardin Co., TN to near Cape Girardeau, MO and brought "said applicant & her children to Hardin County, state of Tennessee in the year 1850." States he had seen the family record, and Martha & Cornelius married 17 October 1811, and the record shows the dates of birth of the children. 5. Government Claim Slip, states Claim No. 10113 of Martha Stanphill, Soldier Cornelius Stanphill, Capt. name unknown, Tenn Militia, received Warrant No. 32,252 - 80 - 55. Required: Service record, marriage, death of Soldier. Widow's maiden name is Martha Jones, 2 Land warrants issued to her. Report states that he served under Capt. Rogers (Chisms) Co., Tenn Vols from Jany 31 to July 6 1818 (Seminole Indians). Alleged marriage Oct 15, 1818. 6. Martha Stamphill, widow of Cornelius, of Capt. Rogers Co., Tenn Militia, residing Purdy, McNairy co, TN. Stating soldier enlisted Jan 31, 1818, discharged July 1818. Rejection form dated 1 May 1874, for pension of $8 per month, stating service was not in War of 1812. 7. Letter from Dept of the Interior Pension Office dated 30 Aug 1880 to Martha Stanphill, Tunnell Hill, Johnson Co., IL stating the discharge certificate of Cornelius Stanphill is on file. 8. Affidavit of Martha Stanfield dated 7 February 1881, of Johnson Co., IL, stating her husband volunteered in Franklin Co., TN, on two occasions and that his two discharges have since been lost/destroyed. Frank Estell, a Lawyer in Winchester, TN was employed to get one Land Warrant, which she sold to Estell; that she gave him one discharge, and has not seen it since. States employed Hiram H. Wise residing near Reynolds Burg, Johnson Co, IL to apply for a second Land Warrant in 1856 or 1857 when she living in Johnson Co., IL. When she got the Warrant for 40 acres, she sold it to Hiram Wise who then sold it to one Wesley Reynolds - but thinks she assigned the Warrant direct to Reynolds. States after she got the last Land Warrant, she removed from Illinois back to the State of Tennessee and resided there until December 1879 then removed to Illinois again and was on 7 Feb 1881 residing near Tunnell Hill P.O., Johnson co, IL. 9. Brief note from Jas T. Wolverton, Att, apparently to the ?Pension Office, can read partial date _____ 12, 1888, that indicates Martha was alive at that time, as she wanted to apply for a pension if entitled. 1865 Illinois State census listed Martha Stanphill, head of household age 60-70, total four in household: 1 male -10 1 male 20-30 1 female 20-30 Mary Lu Nelson Johnson 132 Skyview Trail Trafford, AL 35172-9288
