(Grandpa) Brown was born near Adamsville, Tenn., Feb. 21, 1843, died at his home in Erick last Sunday night, Nov. 5, 1922, at 10:20 p.m. The news of his death came as a great shock to the people of Erick. Mr. Brown had just returned from a visit to friends in Illinois and it is presumed that he contracted pneumonia while returning home, for shortly after arriving in Erick he took sick, and gradually grew worse. Last week he informed those who were near and dear to him that he was going to die, and had all his papers and legal business attended to. John Thomas Brown was converted at the age of 18 years, at which time he united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Pleasant Ridge, Ill. Was married to Susan Tennessee Hanks, Nov. 28, 1865. To this union was born one child, now Mrs. Jeff Gallegly of Erick, Okla. He leaves to mourn his death a wife, one daughter, four grandchildren, Clifton, Ersie and Glennie Gallegly of Erick, Okla., and John Gallegly of Seward, Alaska, two great grandchildren Johnnie Wayne and Billy Gallegly of Erick, Okla. Grandpa Brown was the last survivor of a family of four boys and two girls to be called home to rest. He was a member of the Masonic order, and its members took charge of the body. The town of Erick has lost one of its best citizens in the death of J. T. Brown, and his place is not going to be soon filled. John Brown, served his country, in the civil war, and few men reverent the stars and stripes as did he, who did his duty as a soldier and a citizen. For years we have known Mr. Brown and it was our pleasure to have him stop at our office, for he always seemed to bring gladness and good cheer, never complaining but always looking on the sunny side of life. He was a grand old man. Additional Comments: My thanks go to the good folks in Beckham County, OK whose transcription project lead me to my lost ancestors.
