Hale WILLIAM McCLURE DRANE. Among the notable Tennessee families none has been more conspicuous in the business life of Montgomery county than the Drane family, which for three generations has produced citizens of a solid integrity and business men who have been able to assume a large part in the work and commerce of this portion of the state. William McClure Drane, who was born in Montgomery county, May 23, 1866, has for a number of years been identified with the manufacturing and commercial activities of Clarksville. He is a son of the late William M. and Amelia (Haddox) Drane. His father was born in Clarksville, September 29, 1826, and the mother was born in Logan county, Kentucky, February 22, 1836. In the death of the senior William Drane, which occurred December 9, 1909, Montgomery county and Clarksville lost a business man and farmer of exceptional ability and achievement. As a tobacco dealer he was for years one of the largest in the county. He was a member of the Episcopal church. He was the son of Walter H. Drane, who was born in Montgomery county, Maryland, in 1798, accompanied his parents to Kentucky, where he studied medicine at Transylvania University, and after a brief practice engaged in the tobacco business at Clarksville, where he acquired a fortune. He married Eliza McClure, whose birth occurred in Montgomery county, Tennessee, in 1808, and her father, Hugh McClure, was one of the pioneers who laid the foundations of civilization and industry in this part of Tennessee. William M. Drane had an excellent preparation for his business career, and was graduated from the Southwest Presbyterian University in the class of 1889. For several years he was bookkeeper in the Northern Bank of Clarksville, and then engaged in the machine and foundry business, in which he still has some interest. He is now the head of an important establishment dealing in agricultural implements. December 14, 1899, Mr. Drane married Miss Mary Luckett, daughter of T. D. and Maria (Gracey) Luckett. Her father was born in Kentucky, November 2, 1843, and is now in the tobacco business at Louisville. Mr. and Mrs. Drane have two children, Roberta, born March 14, 1911, and W. M. Jr., October 4, 1912. Their church is the Episcopal, and Mr. Drane during his college career was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
