Hale SAMUEL J. HODGSON. One of the oldest business establishments in Clarksville is the Hodgson marble works, which was founded in 1852 by the father of the two enterprising brothers who now conduct the business under its original name. Throughout many years of its residence in this city the Hodgson family has represented that integrity of business character and worthy citizenship which give solidity to any community. Samuel Hodgson, the founder of the family name and fortunes in Clarksville, was a native of England, whence he came during his young manhood to America and in Clarksville married Julia Kearney, a native of Ireland. They were the parents of seven children, three of whom are now living. The parents were both members of the Methodist church, and in politics he adopted the principles of Democracy. Samuel J. Hodgson, who with his brother, Lee M., continues the business founded so many years ago by their father, was born in Clarksville and has spent practically all his life in this city, having obtained his education in the public schools. He and his brother are both expert marble cutters, and have the executive ability to develop a business beyond the needs of the local trade. With their traveling salesmen they send the products of their yards and shops all over the tobacco district. Under the management of the brothers this has became one of the large business assets of Clarksville. Samuel J. Hodgson married, in 1889, Miss Georgie Wood, whose father, Hardin J. Wood, was a wealthy farmer of Trenton, Kentucky. The four living children of their marriage are Marguerite, Mabel W., Louis W. and Georgia C., the two youngest being still at school. A Democrat in polities, Mr. Hodgson is now serving his third term as alderman. Both in office and as a private citizen his support has always been behind such movements and undertakings as provided a definite improvement and betterment of Clarksville. At the present writing his firm is building a plant, with most modern facilities at a total cost of about sixty thousand dollars. Especially has he been of service in- getting the water works and the sewage system installed, and in the list of municipal enterprises, though not the first in point of time, these are always first in importance for the welfare of all citizens.
