Hale THOMAS EWING McREYNOLDS. An active and prosperous business man of Clarksville, Montgomery county, Thomas Ewing McReynolds is known as one of the leading undertakers and furniture dealers of this section of the state. He is a native of this city, his birth having occurred in Clarksville November 2, 1852. He belongs to an old and highly respected Kentucky family, his grandfather, Williston McReynolds, a prominent farmer, and his father, William L. McReynolds, having been born in Logan county, Kentucky. Born in 1822, William L. McReynolds was there brought up and educated. Coming from Kentucky to Tennessee when seventeen years of age, he learned the carpenter's trade, and for many years was one of the foremost builders and contractors of Clarksville, where he erected many large buildings and fine residences. A steadfast Democrat in polities, he served as an alderman several terms, and both he and his wife were prominent members of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, which he served for many years as steward and Sunday-school teacher. He married Mary A. Jett, who was born in Montgomery county, Tennessee, which was also the birthplace of her father, Alfred Jett, a prosperous agriculturist. To them five children were born, as follows: Clara, Jiving with her brother Thomas, in Clarksville; Orlando E., residing in Florida; Thomas E., the subject of this brief sketch; Bet-tie, wife of B. F. Wood, of Jackson, Tennessee; and James C., of Colorado. Neither of the parents' are now living, the death of the father having occurred in 1881, and that of the mother in 1909. Receiving his education in Clarksville, Thomas Ewing McReynolds attended both the public schools and the Southwestern Presbyterian University. Ready then to begin life on his own account, he secured a position as clerk in a furniture store, and in that capacity gave such eminent satisfaction to all concerned that he was retained by one firm for a period of nineteen years. In 1908 Mr. McReynolds started in business for himself as a furniture dealer and undertaker, and is meeting with acknowledged success, his reputation being well established throughout this section of the state. Mr. McReynolds is one of the directors of the First National Bank of Clarksville, and also of the Southern Trust Company. He is an active member of the Undertakers & Embalmers' Association of Tennessee, of which he had the honor of serving as its first president, and is also one of the trustees of the Odd Fellows' Home, at New Providence, which was established in 1895, and has now one hundred and two inmates. Mr. McReynolds has been twice married. He married first, November 16, 1893, Mary Harris, whose father, Sampson Harris, was a native of Montgomery county, and for many years one of its successful farmers. She died January 11, 1907. Five children were born of their union, namely: William Harris; Clement E.; Robert L.; Sarah; and Mary T., deceased. On February 15, 1910, Mr. McReynolds married for his second wife Mrs. Nina Bryant, of Paducah, Kentucky. Politically Mr. McReynolds is identified with the Democratic party, and has served as alderman one term. Fraternally he is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; of the Knights of Pythias; and of the Woodmen of the World. Religiously he is a member, and a steward, of the Methodist Episcopal church, to which Mrs. McReynolds also belongs, and of which his first wife was a consistent member.
