Hale A. C. STAFFORD. The present county trustee of Montgomery county, Mr. A. C. Stafford, of Clarksville, has for many years had an influential place in political affairs of his county. As a public servant his efficiency and fidelity to the interests committed to his charge have fully justified his long official career. A native Tennesseean, he was born in Lincoln county on the 14th of December, 1851. He was the fifth of six children, three of whom are living, born to William and Mary (Shelton) Stafford. His parents were also natives of this state, so the family is one of the old-established households. His father, who died young, spent his active career in Lincoln county as a farmer. He was a Democrat, and he and wife were both communicants of the Christian church. A. C. Stafford is a man of self-attainment and has gained his advancement through his own efforts rather than by any influential family position. Educated in country schools, he first took up farming as an occupation and followed it successfully until he was thirty years old. As a loyal Democrat he began his political career early in life. The first office to which he was elected was that of constable. He then served as deputy sheriff, and for twelve years was a member of the Clarksville police force. His popularity had extended over the county, and he was then a successful candidate for the office of sheriff, holding that position for six years. The people then chose him to his present place as county trustee, where he has served for the past six years. Mr. Stafford was married in 1875 to Miss Dona Collier, who was born and reared in Montgomery county, a daughter of Hugh and Martha Collier, her father being one of the substantial farmers of the county. The Stafford home circle includes seven children, named as follows: Josie L., the wife of L. Clifton, of Clarksville; Daisy B., the wife of George Westenbarger, residents of West Virginia; A. C., Jr., at home; Charles, deputy trustee under his father; Frank, who is employed in the First National Bank of Clarksville; Louise, in school; and William McKinley, at home. In religious matters Mrs. Stafford chooses the Baptist and her husband the Methodist church. He is affiliated with, the Elks, the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias, and has many warm friends throughout the city and county.
