A son of the late L. S. Whitefield, he was born June 16, 1865, in Montgomery county, where he has always made his home. His paternal grandfather, William Whitefield. was a native of North Carolina. L. S. Whitefield was born on the home farm in North Carolina in 1832. A man of versatile talents, he was variously employed during his earlier life, at one time having been employed in mercantile pursuits at New Providence, Montgomery county. He invested largely in land, and for forty years prior to his death, which occurred in 1906, was engaged in farming, a part of the time living on the farm now occupied by the doctor, but owning another estate. He married, in 1847, Eliza Trice, who was born in Davidson county, Tennessee, November 20, 1833, and died in Montgomery county, December 11, 1903. She was of Virginian ancestry, her father, T. H. Trice, having been born in Virginia, where his father located on coming from Scotland to America. Of the two children born of their union, Dr. Whitefield, the younger child, is the only one living. Amply fitted for the exacting profession which he had chosen, and for which he was so well adapted, Dr. Whitefield located at New Providence, where he built up an extensive practice. At the end of seventeen years of strenuous professional work, the doctor's health became undermined to such an extent that he was forced to relinquish his profession, and is now living retired at his pleasant home.
