Chars. Conway’s Co. Tenn. Mil. State of Tennessee County of Morgan On this twenty first day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifty personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid Solomon Potter aged fifty eight years a resident of Morgan County in the State of Tennessee who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Solomon Potter who was a private in the company commanded by Captain John Chiles in the Regiment of E. Tennessee Volunteers in the War with Creek Indians during the war with Great Britain declared by the Untied States on the 18th day of June 1812 that he volunteered at Knoxville on or about the [blank] day of October 1814 for the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of seven months & twenty days and was honorably discharged on the [blank] day of May 1815 on account of peace being made. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the “Act granting Bounty Land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States,” passed September 28th 1850. /s/ Solomon Potter [HANDWRITTEN AFFIDAVIT] State of Tennessee Morgan County Be it known that on the first day November 1851 before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid duly authorized by law to administer oaths personally appeared Richard Springfield and made oath in due form law that he and Solomon Potter and others volunteered at the Town of Knoxville under Captain John Chiles some time he believes in the month of Sept 1814 and marched to the Hickory grove as now (fort Jackson) where he the said John Chiles their first Capt was elected Mayor and Charles Conway was elected Captain of said Chileses Company when it was known as Conways Company and that the said Solomon Potter served out the full term of six months then a further term of one month and twenty days and that they the said Richard Stringfield and Solomon Potter served the tour of duty above stated together and were discharged at Knoxville Tennessee at the same time as he believes some time in May 1815. Their discharges specified a tour of service for the term of seven months & twenty days. Richard (his mark) Stringfield [HANDWRITTEN AFFIDAVIT] State of Tennessee Morgan County Be it known that on the eleventh day of December 1857 before me a Justice of the Peace in and for said county personally appeared Joseph Holloway and made oath in due form of law that he volunteered in Captain John Chileses Company in Knox County, Tennessee and that Solomon Potter who is now an applicant for bounty land under the act of Sept. 28th 1851 and started to the Hickory grounds for a six months tour about the last of Sept 1814 was a volunteer marched on to where the said Joseph Holloway was thrown from his horse and so disabled that he could not proceed further and that the said Solomon Potter was still in the service in said company and went on and after the expiration of said tour came back with others of the said company but that Charles Conaway became Capt of said company in the room of Chiles after Chiles was elected Mayor. Scott Justice of the Peace WAR OF 1812 DECLARATION OF SOLDIER FOR PENSION State of Tennessee County of Morgan On this thirteenth day of March one thousand eight hundred and seventy one personally appeared before me John L. Scott Clerk of the County Court a Court of Record within and for the county and state aforesaid; Solomon Potter, aged 78 years, a resident of Eighth District, County of Morgan State of Tennessee, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married, that his wife’s name was Easter Melton, to whom he was married at Squire Smith’s Roane County Tenn. on the [blank] day of [blank]; that he served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Solomon Potter who enrolled in Captain Charles Conway Company at Knox County Tenn. on [blank] and was honorably discharged at Knoxville Tennessee on [blank] 1814; that he was honorably discharged as above stated and afterwards made application to Department for land warrant & in said declaration enclosed said discharge which was sent to Washington DC with said declaration & has not been returned; that he, at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort or exercised the functions of any officer whatever under any authority or pretended authority in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the Constitution of the United States; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States, under the provision of the act approved February 14, 1871, and he hereby constitutes and appoints with full power of substitution and revocation, A.J. Johnson of Knoxville, Tenn. his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his post office is at Wartburg County of Morgan State of Tennessee, that his domicile or place of abode is eighth civil district. /s/ Solomon Potter Attest. /s/ A.P. Gallaway /s/ W.B. Crenshaw WAR OF 1812 BRIEF OF CLAIM FOR A SURVIVOR’S PENSION In the case of Solomon Potter, a [blank] of Captain Chas Conway Company, Tenn. Mil. Residence Morgan County, Tenn. Wartburg, enlisted Sept. 20, 1814, discharged May 1, 1815. Declaration and identification in due form, filed May 25, 1871. Service for sixty days, shown as follows: Report of Third Auditor shows that Solomon Potter served in Capt Chas Conway’s Co. Tenn. Mil. from Sept 20, 1814 to May 1, 1815. Length of service, 224 days. Claimant declares he is not a pensioner under any previous act. Loyalty, claimant’s averment and testimony of A.P. Gallaway & W.B. Crenshaw, good character of witnesses, certified to by Jm. Stropter.
