Hale JOHN P. ADAMS. For seventeen years the business activities of Union City, Tennessee, have had an influential factor in John P. Adams, one of the leading grocers of the town, and the social life of the place also has felt his genial influence. Mr. Adams is a native of Tennessee, born in Obion county, June 27, 1864, fifth in the family of thirteen children of Robert A. and Ellen (Thompson) Adams, both natives of the "Volunteer" state. His early ancestors in this country were residents of New England. They migrated from Massachusetts to Tennessee in the days of pioneering and were among the primitive settlers of this state, where they engaged in agricultural pursuits. Robert A. Adams has been a farmer all his life. On the home farm, John P. passed his boyhood days, and in the public schools he received his education. On reaching man's estate, he engaged in the occupation in which he had been reared, and this he followed for several years. Indeed, he is still interested in farming and stock dealing, owning and operating two farms, of one hundred acres each, on which he raises corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco. A business career, however, had its attractions for him and he directed his attention to the grocery business, in which he has met with success commensurate with his genial personality combined with correct methods and honest efforts. By keeping his store well stocked with the best high grade goods, at reasonable prices, and by promptness and carefulness he early established and has maintained throughout the years a large and lucrative business. In October, 1895, Mr. Adams was married to Miss Lena Beeves, and their union has been blessed in the birth of four children, Louise, Marjory, Edward and Wallace. At this writing, 1912, Mr. Adams is a member of the Board of Equalizers of Obion county, and for the past thirteen years he has been city councilman. Fraternally, he is identified with the B. P. O. E., the K. of P. and the W. of the W. Additional Comments: From: A history of Tennessee and Tennesseans : the leaders and representative men in commerce, industry and modern activities by Will T.
