They are in the original order and spelling used at the time, beginning the first year of county organization up to the first federal census here in 1830. They may provide some clues for further research or validate other sources. They were taken from microfilm of the original tax books, the images were very poor, difficult to read, so may contain transcription errors. The complete tax rolls list the poll or property taxes paid, the range and section location of the tracts, the number of acres, sometime the grant or entry number, and other notes. It is possible those over 50, not paying a poll tax or owning any land, do not appear on these lists. Some taxpayers may have never lived in Obion County. Land was granted here by North Carolina in the late 1700s, known then as the Territory South of the Ohio, Surveyors District 13, to their Revolutionary War soldiers. Many of the tracts were later sold by them, land speculators, or descendants back east. A further study of the deeds and grants may indicate which taxpayers actually lived in Obion County in the 1820s. These individuals may be listed on 1820 and 1830 census in other states or counties and were just passing through Obion County to cross the Mississippi River a few miles north at Hickman, Kentucky. Many of these taxpayers do not appear on the 1830 census here. ============================================================================= 1824 * page 1 missing * page 2 * ?
