He entered service in Virginia troops in 1775 under command of Captain Aaron Lewis. Later he enlisted again under Colonel William Christian and served in the Cherokee Campaign. He served as a spy in Colonel Arthur Campbell's regiment. He served with Colonel Daniel Smith in the Indian attack at Glade Hollow Fort. He also served under General William. Russell.
