He was born in March 1752. He enlisted in Botetourt County, Virginia, later Rockbridge County, in 1776 or 1777. He served twelve months in Captain Thomas Posey's company. When Captain Posey was promoted John Nelson served under Captain James Buckhanon in Colonel Daniel Morgan's regiment. Later he served in the militia. He was in skirmisihes at Monmouth and Seony Point He refered in his application to his wife and five children who were living with him in 1818. Mathew and Daniel Nelson, citizens of Knoxville, declared that in 1818 that they were sons of John Nelson. In July 1820 John Nelson, aged 68 in March 1820, wrote to say that his family consisted of wife, Sarah, aged about 60 years, daughter, Rachel, aged about 19 and a son Samuel aged 17.
