YOUNG deputy sheriff of Perry county, was waylaid and shot and probably killed on the 17th, on Lick Creek, Perry county, about seven miles from Linden. He was in the habit early in the morning of going to his pasture near his house, to turn his mules out. On the morning of the 17th, he was at the gap and in the act of letting it down when he was shot from ambush by John and Sion LEDBETTER. The weapon used was a shot gun loaded with buckshot and slugs. The first shot struck him in the face near the eye and knocked him down, but was not a dangerous wound. They shot him after he fell, the ball striking him in the shoulder and ranging down with his breast, producing a mortal wound, doubtless. The young men fled and have not been arrested at last accounts. The Messrs. LEDBETTER are cousin to YOUNG and the shooting is the result of an old grudge recently revived. Mr. YOUNG was one of the most energetic, enterprising, popular, and valuable citizens of Perry county. His mother was at the home of her brother our esteemed fellow citizen, Mr. B.P. LEDBETTER, when she heard of the death of her son. Mr. YOUNG leaves a wife and one child. John LEDBETTER is also a married man, and his brother is single. The scene of blood is only about seven miles from where Wm. E. GUTHRIE was killed in a similar manner by the DODSON four or five years ago. Since the war bloodshed has been frequent in Perry county, but for twenty years before the war only one man was killed. The LEDBETTERS and Mr. YOUNG are wealthy, sober, and of good repute, and the affair is a peculiarly unfortunate one. -- Jackson Sun, 27 Aug 1875, pg. 2 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/tn/perry/obits/y/young50ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/tnfiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
