Hickey 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry Certificate 486373, Widow 1059.088 James G. Hickey was born 13 May 1836 in Macon County, North Carolina. He died 6 January 1916. No official record of his marriage was located in Fannin County, Georgia or Cherokee County, North Carolina. A family record of marriage of James G. Hickey and Ruthy J. Voyles was certified by W.L. Voyles, notary of Cherokee County in 1916 from a family Bible that was published in 1876. The Bible was in Ruth Jane Hickey's possession in 1916. The Justice of the Peace, Sol Stansbury, who married them at his residence was deceased and only a few of James' family were present and they could not be found for the deposition. Ruth sent a letter stating that they were married in Fannin County, Georgia on 20 January 1859. There is a deposition from Alice E. Lipford dated 15 February 1916. She states that she is 41 years old and that she was present when James G. Hickey died on 6 January 1916 at his home in Turtletown. She states that she has known both James and Ruth for 11 years. James G. Hickey stated that he was 5 feet 10 inches tall with light complexion. His eyes were blue and his hair was light. His occupation was listed as farmer. James listed his places of residence since leaving the service as follows: in Georgia in 1865, in Cherokee County, N.C. 1865 to 1905. In Polk County, Tennessee since 1905. His post office address is listed as Turtletown, Polk County, Tennessee. Dated 31 May 1912. His original affidavit dated 14 April 1883 stated that he resided in Fannin County, Georgia in 1861 and moved to Cherokee County, NC in February 1862. He returned to Georgia in the Fall of 1862 and then returned to Cherokee County in the spring of 1863. He moved to Madisonville in Monroe County, Tennessee in January 1864 where he remained until the date of his enlistment. He stated that his post office address while in Georgia was Morganton, Fannin County. While in Tennessee his post office addresses were Madisonville, Sweetwater and Philadelphia. While in North Carolina his post office address was Persimmon Creek and since the war (till January 1877) Murphy, NC. Since 1877 it has been England's Point, Cherokee County, NC. James enlisted for the service at Loudon, Tennessee on the 9th of July 1864 as a Private in Company G, 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Infantry Volunteers. He was discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee on 30 November 1864. His pension was approved at the rate of $20 per month commencing on 24 May 1911. He served in the battles of Loudon, Knoxville and Cumberland Gap. His captain was E. Voyles and he names one of his comrades as James Voyles. There is a deposition from John Voyles of Culberson, North Carolina who had been a neighbor to him. He states that James became sick while on a raid to western North Carolina and was unable to travel. He was sent back in a wagon to Madisonville by order of Dr. R.P. Crowder. He says that he went on to western North Carolina and when he returned to Madisonville, TN he found the claimant there under treatment by a Dr. Upton. He was being treated for jaundice and liver trouble. He was unable for service thereafter. He stated that he knew the claimant had never been well since then and had difficulty working. T.D. Hickey sent a letter to the Commissioners of Pensions, Washington D.C. stating that Ruth J. Hickey, Certificate # 806888 died on March 7, 1917. The children of James G. Decatur 1866 Isabellar 1870 Samuel 1876 and George 1878. Note that the birthdates differ greatly from the more complete report later. T.D. Hickey applied for payment of last expenses of Ruth J. Hickey, his mother. He stated that the pensioner lived with him at the time of her death and that she had incurred $92 in expenses. She was buried at Friendship Cemetery in Cherokee County. T.D.
