Fanalou Carlen dies at 89; services Friday
Cookeville - Mrs. Fanalou Whitson Carlen, 89, widow of William Benton Carlen 
Sr., died today in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville after s short illness.
     Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Avenue Church of 
Christ. Glen McDaniel will officiate. Buriel will be in Cookeville City 
Cemetery.
     Her family will begin receiving visitors at 6 p. m. today at Whitson 
Funeral Home.
     Mrs. Carlen was a descendant of pioneer settlers of the Cookeville area. 
She was a native of Putnam County and a daughter of the late Jere and Frances 
Parizetta Terry Whitson.
     Her father was one of the founders of Dixie College, now Tennessee 
Technological University, and he gave the land for the establishment of the 
college.
     Mrs. Carlen's husband was the owner of Carlen Motor Co., a Chevrolet 
dealership. He died in 1979.
    She attended Dixie College and was a graduate of the former Ward-Belmont 
junior college in Nashville.
     Mrs. Carlen was a member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ and its 
Ladies Bible Class.
     She was a member of the Old Walton Road Chapter, Daughters of the American 
Revolution, a past state vice regent of the DAR and a member of the Colonial 
Dames of America in Tennessee, the Ladies Hermitage Association and the Book 
Lover's Club.
     Survivors include two sons, William Benton Carlen, Jr. and Walter Whitson 
Carlen, both of Cookeville; a daughter, Mrs. Frances Carlen Long of Knoxville, 
six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
     Memorial contributions may be made to the Jere Whitson Memorial Library at 
Tennessee Technological University or the Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ 
Library.

Francis Loucinda "Fanalou" Whitson was born 1 May 1897 in Putnam Co., TN. She 
married to William Benton Carlen 23 Dec 1919 in Putnam County. He was born 28 
August 1892 and died 9 Nov 1977 in Nashville.
