Submitter Notes: Elias Howard was born Eli Jackson in Cookeville, TN.
He changed his name sometime after 1870 when he left TN for KY. He
is listed on the roster of the Fourth TN Mounted Infantry as Eli Jackson.
His Union Pension Application lists him as Elias Howard (alias Eli Jackson).


    ELIAS HOWARD, CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES
            AT RESIDENCE HERE

    Member of Mounted Infantry of Tennessee
          Succumbs Sunday Night

Elias Howard, 93, one of the few surviving veterans of the Civil War,
died at his home here, 939 Mathers street, at 11:50 p. m. Sunday after
an illness of a week.

Mr. Howard served in the Civil War with Company K, Fourth Regiment,
Tennessee Mounted Infantry Volunteers.

He was born in Cookeville, Tenn., June 3, 1844. After being mustered out
of the army, he went to Monticello, Kentucky, where he was married to
Miss Josephine Meek. They came to Illinois where they have lived for
many years.

Mr. Howard is survived by the following children: J. P. Howard, of
Centralia, Ill., Charles W. Howard, of Table Grove, Mrs. Ervin Hull,
Miss Ann Howard, Mrs. Glen Sooy, and Cyrus B. Howard, all of this city,
and Mrs. Earl Adamson, of Pocatello, Idaho. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 at the Williamson
Funeral home in charge of Rev. J. E. Boston. Burial will be in the East
Jacksonville cemetery.
