Apple died at his home in this city Thursday night, March 18, 1909, after a long illness. [Date 3/25/1909, Vol. VII, No. 12, Page 5] BAKER, DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. ED: Little daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Ed Baker died last Monday and was buried last Tuesday below Baker's X roads. W. Green conducted the service. Mary was a fine christain woman. She has been a member of the Baptist church for quite a number of years. She leaves a husband and two children, a father and four brothers, a large number of friends to mourn her loss, and I would now say to the bereaved family be of good cheer for as God has given so he taketh away. . . She was four years of age. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. They will be so lonely without little Mattie. L. Denny in this city last Thursday. He was about 80 years old and widely known in this section. [Date 2/10/1909, Vol. VII, No. 6, Page 5] BUCK, MRS. SHERMAN: Mrs. Sherman Buck died Oct. 25, 1909, at the home of her brother, Jonas Caruthers. She came here from her home in Kansas City about two months ago, intending to make a brief visit before going to New Mexico, where she hoped to find health, but this was not to be. She leaves a father, brothers and sisters, besides a devoted husband and baby daughter to mourn the loss of a Chrisiian (sic) mother. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. W. Baxter at Salem cemetery on Oct. 26. [Date 10/28/1909, Vol. VII, No. 43, Page 6] BYERS, W. C.: W. C. Byers died at his home near Brotherton on Friday, Nov. 12, 1909, of consumption. He was well-known in this section. He served with distinction in the Confederate army and in Indian wars. [Date 11/18/1909, Vol. VII, No. 47, Page 5] CHAPIN, W. P.: W. P. Choate died at his home in this city on Monday, of consumption. [Date 5/13/1909, Vol. VII, No. 19, Page 5] COOKE, BOLIVAR H.: Col. Bolivar H. Cooke died at the home of his son in New York city Monday, at the age of 82. He was known by the older citizens of this section. Cookeville was named for his father. Col. Cooke was a veteran of the Mexican war, and for many years a prominent business man in Nashville. L. Reagan, Mr. Parkins, Jordan Dow, Nannie Choate Noah, child of Mike Moore, Mrs. J. H. Williams, Mrs. J. M. Mabry, child of W. M. Smoot, Mrs. T. L. Denny, Mrs. L. J. Lowe, child of H. D. Cooper of Creston was brought down Wednesday night and buried Thursday at the Thompson grave yard. [Date 1/27/1909, Vol. VII, No. 4, Page 3] COOPER, W. J.: Bro. W. J. Cooper, who was reported last week as sick with typhoid fever, died Aug. 31st and was buried with honors of the fraternity (IOOF Mt. View Lodge No. 179), on the 1st, inst. Sunday, Jan 31, 1909, aged about nine months. The remains were sent here and beried (sic) at the West graveyard. Services were held at the home of Mrs. Belle Huddleston. Mrs. Davis is sick and so could not make the trip to Cookeville. [Date 9/23/1909, Vol. VII, No. 38, Page 1] DOW, EMILY: Mrs. Emily Dow, wife of Hon. D. L. Dow, died at her home in this city Tuesday morning, July 27, 1909, after a long and painful illness. The funeral was held at the Baptist church, of which she had been a member for many years, at 10 o'clock Wednesday, and was largely attended. Interment was made in the city cemetery by Rev. L. S. Ewton of Watertown. Mrs. Dow was almost 81 years of age and had a wide acquaintance throughout this section of the state and was highly esteemed by all. She is survived by her husband and six children, J. B. Dow, D. W. Dow, Robert Dow and Mrs. W. W. Baker of this city, Mrs. Geo. Cowan of Monterey and Mrs. R. P. Baker of Sparta. [Date 7/29/1909, Vol. VII, No. 30, Page 4] DOWELL, MARY: Mrs. Mary Dowell died Saturday night after a brief illness and was taken Sunday to the old home cemetery near Celina for burial. [Date 2/24/1909, Vol. VII, No. 8, Page 9] DUBOIS, MARY: On the night of January the 6th at 9 o'clock the death angel visited our community and claimed for it's victim our beloved sister, Mrs. Mary DuBois. Mrs. DuBois was seemingly in perfect health till within a few minutes of her death. The deceased was a devoted Christian woman and did much to advance the cause of Christ. She was a member of the Freewill Christian Baptist Church at Johnson Stand. She leaves four sons and two daughters and a host of friends, whose number can only be described as those who knew her to mourn her loss. . . . JOHN: Mrs. John Duke of Ashland City died at some of her relatives near Clarksville. She was struck with paralysis and only lived a few hours. [Date 3/11/1909, Vol. VII, No. 10, Page 2] ELROD, MRS. JOHN: Mrs. John Elrod, who has been sick for some time, died Wednesday. [Date 2/10/1909, Vol. VII, No. 6, Page 2] ENGLAND, A. J.: Death visited us one day last week and claimed from us A. J. England. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss and quite a number of friends. We would say to the bereaved family prepare yourselves to meet him in that sweet home where parting is no more. Mr. England professed religion some few days before his death and we now believe he is at rest. Will say to his children prepare yourselves for you know not at what time you may be called. She leaves a husband and four children, a father and mother, one brother and four sisters and a host of friends to mourn for loss. Fisher died Aug. 1 after a wearisome illness, leaving a husband and several children and many friends to mourn her departure. Dear ones it was because God loved you so much that he has taken your loving mother to himself, that you of the family who are not Christians would come to Jesus and be saved. [Date 8/12/1909, Vol. VII, No. 32, Page 3] FREEMAN, BURR: The death angel visited our community Saturday July 17, and claimed for its victim Mr. Burr Freeman, aged 24 years, 6 months and 21 days. He leaves a wife and five small children, mother, two brothers, two sisters and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss, but our loss is his eternal gain, for Burr was a good christian man. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. He was buried Sunday evening at the Phillips graveyard, in the presence of a large concourse of friends. [Date 4/8/1909, Vol. VII, No. 14, Page 5] GENTRY, MRS. MARION: Mrs. Marion Gentry died at her home at Monterey Thursday and was buried here at Gentry Cemetery Friday. [Date 6/3/1909, Vol. VII, No. 22, Page 2] GIBBONS, ANGELINE: Angeline Gibbons died June 22 and was buried at Clay Springs the 23rd. [Date 7/1/1909, Vol. VII, No. 26, Page 6] GILLIAM, HASKELL: Mrs. Arva Gilliam's little son, Haskell, died a few days ago with fever. The little boy was loved by all who knew him. He has gone home to his father who was killed on the railroad some time ago. May the Lord bless the mother so she may meet him and father in Heaven above where all is love and there they may be a united family again. Home, sweet home, for all who love the Lord. [Date 5/13/1909, Vol. VII, No. 19, Page 3] GORE, MOUNCE L.: Col. Mounce L. Gore died at his home in Jackson county last Friday, June 18, 1909, aged about 68. He was a member of the Christain church, a Mason and a Confederate soldier. Col. Gore was a brave and dashing soldier, a knightly gentlemen, a Christain citizen. He leaves a wide and four children -- two sons, Frank and John J. Gore, the latter Surveyor of Customs at the port of Nashville, and two daughters, Miss Carrie Gore, of the Cookeville High School, and Miss Nell Gore. He is also survived by one brother, Samuel Gore, and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Morgan and Mrs. W. M. Pickett. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. Hammock, age 8 year and 9 months. . . . [Date 11/4/1909, Vol. VII, No. 45, Page 8] HAMTON, LIZZIE FLOYD: Mrs. Lizzie Floyd Hamton, wife of George Hamton, died several days ago. She seemed to be in good health, washed Monday, ate some krout, some time in the day took something like colic and died Friday night. She left six small children, one baby seven months old. [Date 2/17/1909, Vol. VII, No. 7, Page 3] HANEY, JOHN: The summons of death was sent to the house of our neighbor and took uncle John Haney on the night of Feb. 3. Mr. Haney was a good neighbor and citizen, a Christain (sic) gentleman; we hope his spirit is basking in the eternal light with the angels aronnd (sic) the throne of God in Heavens pure and happy home. O.: Resolutions of Sympathy -- Whereas, the angel of death has again hovered over the town and claimed as its victim the father of our beloved neighbor, J. O. Holladay, . . . Uncle Joe had many friends and relatives throughout the country, to whom we extend our sympathy. [Date 1/27/1909, Vol. VII, No. 4, Page 3] HOLOMAN, BUD: New has just reached this of the death of Bud Holoman, a prominent citizen of Granville. It is reported he died of pneumonia fever. There was a large crowd present. [Date 5/6/1909, Vol. VII, No. 18, Page 7] HOWARD, BEN: Also Ben Howard died last Sunday of pneumonia. He leaves a wife and six small children. His wife is almost blind. We feel very, very sorry indeed, for anyone that is left alone with a family to raise if they can see, but more sorry for one that is blind. [Date 6/10/1909, Vol. VII, No. 23, Page 8] HUDDLESTON, ISAAC: It seems that the death angel has visited our community very frequently in the last month. Mr. Isaac Huddleston died several days ago. He was a good man -- good to his wife, children and neighbors. I have lived near him for 25 years and if I ever heard a harmful word skoken (sic) against him I do not remember. [Date 2/17/1909, Vol. VII, No. 7, Page 3] HUNTER, MARRIETTA: Mrs. Marrietta Hunter, wife of Fred Hunter, died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Belle Huddleston, in this city Easter Sunday, aged about 17. She was buried in the city cemetry (sic) Monday. Rev. W. E. Doss conducting the services. [Date 4/15/1909, Vol. VII, No. 15, Page 4] JACKSON, ANDREW J.: Death visited our town Dec. 29 and claimed as his own Mr. Andrew J. Jackson. The end came peacefully and quietly. Mr. Jackson had long wished to die, but was willing to live as the Lord saw fit. He was 78 years old and had been an invalid half of these years. He had lived in several states, coming here about ten years ago. He was a leader in establishing Oberlin College on a firm working foundation. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. Funeral ceremonies were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. E. Wheeler, assisted by Revs. H. E. Partridge and L. T. Smith. Music was rendered by Misses Dodge and Morley and Messrs. Clark and Phillips. [Date 1/6/1909, Vol. VII, No. 1, Page 8] JARED, JESSE: Another Murder -- Jess Jared was killed at his home in the lower end of the county last Saturday afternoon by John Watts. His head was nearly blown off with a shotgun. The men were neighbors and both good citizens. Watts has not been captured, so far as we are informed. [Date 2/17/1909, Vol. VII, No. 7, Page 1] JARED, MRS. R. L.: Mrs. R. L. Jared died at her home in Nashville Sunday, after a long and exceedingly painful illness. She had been in a hospital much of the time during the past year, and had undergone several operations. The funeral was held in Nashville on Monday. [Date 7/22/1909, Vol. VII, No. 29, Page 4] JOHNSON, LUCINDA: Lucinda Johnson, daughter of Columbus and Mary Johnson, of Monterey, was born March 21, 1899; died March 27, 1909, aged 10 years and 7 days. She left a heart-broken father and mother and two brothers who sadly miss her sweet presence in their home. . . . [Date 7/29/1909, Vol. VII, No. 30, Page 5] JONES, JOHN FISHER: We are sad to report the death of Mr. John Fisher Jones, which occurred here last Friday morning at 5 o'clock. He heard the eastbound local come in and went to the depot to see how many of the train crew wanted breakfast at his son's boarding house. He was standing on the main track talking to the fireman when he was caught under a switch engine and terribly mangled, suffering intensely until 11 o'clock, and went peacefully to sleep and never awoke. Appropriate funeral services were conducted at the Holiness church by Revs. A. P. Welch and Lige Weaver. He was buried in the city cemetery by the side of his wife, who died about 17 months ago. He is survived by one son and a daughter, both of Monterey, Chas. Jones and Mrs. Alvin Countess. Mr. Jones was a devout Christian man, and had a host of friends in Monterey, as well as all over Putnam county. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. Keith, one of the best known and wealthiest men of Nashville, died suddenly on Sunday at the home of his son at Ridgetop. W.: Mrs. J. W. Lee died at her home in this city yesterday. [Date 4/15/1909, Vol. VII, No. 15, Page 6] LEE, Z.: Mr. Z. Lee, who has been sick for some time, died Sunday morning. E.: R. E. Lewis, clerk and master of White county, died at his home in Sparta Aug. 7. [Date 8/19/1909, Vol. VII, No. 33, Page 6] LOWE, L. J.: Maj. L. J. Lowe died here Friday and was buried by the Masonic Order in the City Cemetery Sunday. Maj. Lowe was a Major in the Confederate Army, and was 83 years old. He leaves five children, his wife having died only a few months ago. He been living here with his son Gid H. Lowe, for about two years. JOHN: We are very sorry to announce the death of Mr. And Mrs. John Madewell's little daughter, who died Friday nigh and was buried Saturday. McCluen died at her home in this city on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1909, after a long illness. She was buried in the city cemetery on Monday, Rev. J. T. Price conducting the services. Mrs. McCluen was a most estimable lady, and had resided here several years. She is survived by her husband and nine children, to whom the Herald extends the sympathy of the community. She was nearly 74 years old and belonged to the United Baptist church. [Date 10/21/1909, Vol. VII, No. 42, Page 7] MILLS, LUCY HILL: Mrs. Lucy Hill Mills died several days ago with cancer of the breast. She was a good woman she always met you with a good word and a pleasant smile. We all loved her and hated to give her up, but God knows best. G.: The little daughter of Mr. And Mrs. S. G. Moore was buried at Dodson's Chapel last week. [Date 11/4/1909, Vol. VII, No. 45, Page 6] MORROW, NAT: Nat Morrow of near Cookeville was shot and killed by Oscar Moss at the Welch stave mill near Caney Fork Wednesday evening of last week. The murder resulted from a quarrel over a trifling matter during the day. Moss escaped and has not been arrested as yet. His brother who was present was arrested, brought here and placed under bond. Morrow was about 25 years of age and leaves a wife and two children. [Date 8/12/1909, Vol. VII, No. 32, Page 4] MOSS, PAT: Mrs. Pat Moss of Carthage died last Saturday and was buried Sunday evening. For four years she had been suffering with that dread disease, rheumatism and had been helpless as a little baby, unable to turn herself in bed. She suffered untold agony but she bore her suffering with much patience and said if it was the Lord's will she was willing to stay on and suffer a while longet (sic) for him he had suffered and died on the cross for her, and he willeth not the death of any but that all might live. . . . It is reported that Oaks assulted (sic) Carr with a knife while the latter was cutting wood. She was a good woman and was loved by all who knew here. She has gone to that beautiful home where parting is no more. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss. We extend our spmpathy (sic) to the bereaved family and pray God's blessing to rest on them that they may live on the higd (sic) plain of God's great love, and when he calls them home there will be a united family in Heaven above. He was buried at the Phillips graveyard. Bro Carr conducted the services and at the close took up a collection, the people giving freely, and in less than ten minutes they had $19. His home was in Whitewright, Texas. He leaves three sisters and two brothers and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Proffitt, in this city, Thursday night, Dec. 2, 1909, at 7:45 o'clock, and was buried in Jackson county on Friday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. E. Pennington of Algood. Mrs. Profitt was 79 years old last September, and for many years a member of the Freewill Baptist church. She leaves four children, Mrs. W. E. Hensley of Quebeck, Mrs. H. J. WILL: Mrs. Will Randolph died at her home last Saturday and was buried Sunday at Neverfail. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones. After 83 years of earthly existence one more of the purest and most like of women has entered life more abundant . . . Mrs. Elizabeth Ray was born Feb. 24, 1827. She was converted when young at a meeting conducted at her father's home by Rev. Jesse Hickman. Her father was converted at the same meeting and some more of the family. They all joined the C. P. Church at Hopewell Campground on Cane Creek, then White County, now in Putnam. Aunt Lisey, as she was so often called by many, lived devoted Christain for more than forty years. She was wholly sanctified in the last part of her life and left all the evidence that could be desired to prove to her friends and loved ones that she was ready for the summons and was going to greet her husband and children that had obeyed the summons of death and gone on before. So on the morning of the 7th of March, 1909, at 6:30 o'clock her spirit took its flight to that everlasting home of rest that the blessed Savior went to long ago to prepare for all his children. She was married to J. P. Ray Oct. 11, 1849. To them was born one son and two daughters. The son and two daughters. The son and one daughter died in infancy; the other daughter married J. P. Young of Smith County, now living one mile from Cookeville. Aunt Lisey leaves six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, one daughter and son-in-law, and a host of friends to mourn their loss but her great gain. His remains were shipped here for burial, arriving Wednesday noon, and the funeral will take place today. Bob, as we called hi, was a son of Mr. And Mrs. A. A. Reagan of this city, and he lived here most of his life, going west a few years ago in the hope of recovering his health. Their baby was in a cradle in the room where the fire started and was also burned. The parents had left the house for a few minutes when the fire occurred. They took shelter under a tree with a team, which was also killed. [Date 10/14/1909, Vol. VII, No. 41, Page 8] SIMS, TOM: Fatal Accident - Tuesday morning of last week Tom Sims, colored was killed by a Tennessee Central freight trains at the crossing near R. P. Morgan's residence. Sims was driving a team belonging to the Cookeville Roller Mills, hitched to a wagon with no bed and collided with the train. He was thrown under the engine and badly mangled. His team was not hurt and the wagon slightly damaged. Sims was a respected negro and had lived here many years. Stephens, express messenger on the shopping train was shot and instantly killed in his car as the train was leaving Boma last Friday morning. J. H. Thomas did the shooting. He boarded the train at Boma, went into the express car and picked up Stephens pistol. When told to put it down he shot Stephens in the head and again after he fell also shooting at Conductor Owen and the porter. Thomas is said to be insane. He has a family and lives near Boma. He was arrested, brought here, placed in jail and indicted for murder in the first degree. Stultz died Saturday, June 5 at her home in Nashville, and was brought to this city for burial. She was the widow of Henry Stultz, who died several years ago. Mrs. Stultz lived here a number of years and was well known in this city. She was about 76 years of age, and a noble woman. She leaves one child, Mrs. Ella Hogan of Nashville. [Date 2/24/1909, Vol. VII, No. 8, Page 6] TERRY, WESLEY: Wesley Terry, 14 year old son of P. Terry, was accidentally killed at Livingston last week. He was driving a delivery wagon for his father when the horse ran into a telephone pole throwing him from his seat under the horse, where he was kicked and stamped upon until fatally injured, living only a few minutes after being take from under the horse. [Date 5/27/1909, Vol. VII, No. 21, Page 4] THOMPSON, ALICE: Mrs. Alice Thompson died at Monterey on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1909, aged 43 years, and will be buried at Cookeville today. Mrs. Thomoson (sic) was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Dow of this city and leaves four children. She has suffered greatly with cancer, and great will be her reward now that rest has come. Mrs. Wallace was well known in this section, and was famous during the civil war. B.: J. B. Watts committed suicide at his home near Chestnut Mound last Friday by taking morphine. He was under indictment for killing Jesse Jared some time back, and his case was set for trial in Cookeville Monday. He was about 70 years old and leaves a family. [Date 6/3/1909, Vol. VII, No. 22, Page 1] WATTS, THOMAS L.: Died Aug. 4, 1909, at Granville, Tenn., Thomas L. Watts. Age 88 years, 9 months, and 29 days. Professed the religion of Christ in 1866, under the ministry of J. L. Dillard, D. D., of the C. P. church. Bro. Watts became a member of same and lived an exemplary life, a tender-hearted, affectionate Christian. Expressed himself many times to the writer: "I am only waiting the Master's time." His wife preceded him to the home above eleven years. Their bodies sleep side by side at Sadler Cemetery. Their funerals were preached Aug. 5th by the writer (A. C. Morgan). A large crowd at funeral. THOS: The infant child of Mr. And Mrs. Tho's Welch, who lives about five miles from here, was drowned last Saturday by falling into a tub of water, and was buried yesterday. DANIEL: News reaches us that Mrs. Daniel Whittaker of this city had been drowned in the Cumberland River, below Gainesboro at their farm, where she was visiting. He was a gallant officer in the Civil War and also served with distruction (sic) in the Philippines as major of the First Tennessee Infantry. JIM: The death angel visited our community and claimed for its victim Mrs. Jim Willeford aged 71 years, she leaves a husband two children and nine grandchildren. She was buried at Hilham. After suffering five weeks with typhoid fever he left this world of sin, pain and has gone home to dwell with God and his Angels. He said in his last moments "I am going home." He leaves a wife and one child, three sisters and three brothers and a host of friends and relatives to mourn his death. We would say to the bereaved family be obedient unto God and some day we will meet him in heaven where parting will be no more. Williams died at her home in Louisville, Ky., last Saturday, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Williams was the mother of Mrs. A. Algood of this city, and known by many of our citizens.
