Mack had $12.00 and Amy $15.00 worth of work done - clear & warm. 24 A light snow fell this morning. 25 Baxter, Bettie, Sallie went to Roddy to hear preaching. 26 Snow fell last night half inch deep. W. G. Roddy cut down the big oak in his yard. 27 Papa & Mama gone to W. D. Smith's. 28 Papa sold to J. Keelon (Jahu Keylon, my gr-grandfather -ECS) 1200 lbs hay 50 $600 Rain in the evening - (Heifer) March 1, 1900 snowing this morning. Mama & the girls framed a quilt. 2 Mack took 7 bushels wheat to the mill at S. City. Rec'd for it 266 lbs flour. Papa settled with L. T. Troyman due Papa $1.57 (paid). 4 Baxter & Mack attend church at White's Creek - Baxter found Papa's sow & pigs yesterday. 5 W. D. Smith was here for dinner. 6 Papa went to Levi Tredway's. 7 Lea Walker & son (Freeman) here for dinner. Bettie went to Mr. Ewings this evening in route to Breedenton via River Road. 8 Mack caught the Yellow Rabbit 9 Papa hauled 96 ft railing for picket fence to Aunt Amy's (paid 95 cents). 10 Papa, Mama, Baxter and Mack attended church at Old Friendship. Nice day. 11 Papa, Baxter, Mack, Amy and Sallie attended church. Baxter went to W. D. Smith's this eve. Mack received 12 pictures. 12 Papa, bought 12 lb. nails for Aunt Amy's yard fence. (Paid 60 cents). 14 W. D. Smith here, Baxter cut his leg with an adze. 15 Snowing this morning. Continued to snow all day. Depth 6 1/2 half inches. Will Brady was here for dinner. Hugh Ray came to work on the farm on the 13th March 1900. 16 Mack brought Baxter home this eve. 17 Mack's "Yellow Rabbit" captured on the 8th instant, died last night. 18 Received letters from S. G. & M. R. Clack. Dr. Lawson is treating E. K. Stout for cancer. 19 Hugh Ray failed to appear for duty this morning, he worked only 5 days. 20 Walter Ray called this morning. 21 Baxter is gone to W. D. Smith's to work on the yard fence, he worked 2 3/4 days in all and paid Tope 50 cents for work. Total due Baxter (P'd on 29) $2.50. 23 Papa, Mama took dinner with Aunt Margaret Majors; and brought "Old Bill" (horse) home with them. Was offered $25.00 for him. Mack commenced planting potatoes. 24 Mack went to his Uncle Spencer's in eve. Papa commenced planting potatoes. Amy wrote a letter to Annie Chattin and one to her Aunt Amy Johnson. 25 Rain in morning and until 4:p.m. Wrote Aunt Amy again. 26 Mama took daughter to Roddy. 27 Papa sold "Old Bill" (horse) to H. T. Smith on 6 months time for $25.00 interest from date. Rec'd letter from Aunt on 26th. 28 Planted corn & irish potatoes. 29 Mailed a letter to Aunt Amy. Paid Baxter for work on Aunt Amy's yard fence. $2.50. 30 Amy's school at Roddy closed. Billie Smith paid Tope (yard fence) 50 cents and I gave Billie Smith cr. for 50 cents. April 2, 1900 Boid Dannel commenced work. 4 Papa sent Aunt Amy a cashier's check for $30.00. 5 Mama's birthday - 51yr. Work done getting R. R. fence posts by W. D. Smith 1 3/4 days - 87 cents, by W. D. Smith Wagon & Team 1 day - $1.00, by Henry Majors 1 3/4 days - 87 cents, by Frank Tap 1 3/4 days - 87 cents, by W. R. Clack 1 3/4 days - 87 cents. Total $4.48. 11 Tennie C. came to see us. 14 Tennie C. returned home. Papa attended church at Hinds Valley. Mama, Baxter & Mack at Old Friendship. 15 Papa, Mama, Baxter, Mack, Amy, & Sallie at Old Friendship. 19 Rec'd letter from Aunt Amy. Mack is helping A. J. S. raise his barn. Clack, Roddy, Tenn.--- ECS) Lancaster Texas April the 16 1900 My Dear Amy I will try to write you this afternoon I guess you are thinking that I am lost or a strange being because I am so long answering your good kind letter which came to hand the 6th with the check all right in it. For which I feal undear many obligation to you all for your kind favors & good letters that I have received since I have been hear well I have been out at Bill Johnson when I came to Lucy she had taken my letter out of the office so I have not been well & have just let the time pass on untill I could cry about it hope you will excuse me well I have about decided to start home this day wek and come strait threw I would like so much to see Sam & Vesta & the children but as I am not fealing very well & all alone & I am tired & want to be at home I thought I had better come the nearest rout they are all saying stay another month I cant oh I wish you could see how pretty every thing looks hear know corn is about ready to plow wheat & oats looks fine they are just planting cotton know garden stuff is in such as onions lettus mustard reddish we had a rain storm last knight very hard thunder we heard this morning that they had a cyclone at Royes City last knight I feal uneasy about Bro Cage & family they lived in 2 miles of that place. Cage has been down hear to see me I received a letter from Gorda Johnson in Chattanooga a few days ago insisting that I must write them when to meet me & that I must stay with them a week or two I will write you againe before I leave with much love for all I close Amy Johnson (additional notes on edges---Ecs) Sister Lamira health is pretty good she could come home with me if she would. I hope to see you all soon then I can say more then I can write by by 27 Aunt Amy J- arrived at home today from Texas. 28 Mack brought Aunt's trunk from Roddy. May 3, 1900 Papa went to Spring City. Mack & Boid moved the hay-stack to barn. (pointing hand) Mrs. Bill Hicks died yesterday. Baxter & Mack attended Commencement at Grandview. 6 Mack went to Evansville on No. 7. 8 Papa went to Rockwood. Stopped at Dr. J. A. Murrays on his return. Duncan finished R. R. fence on the Johnson farm on the 8th of May. 12 (pointing hand) Cyrus W. Henry died last night at 12 M. at Rhea Springs at the age of 65 years. (pointing hand) Hardy West died May 12, 1900 aged 97 years 7 mo. & 8 days. (was born in Branville County N. C. Oct. 6th, 1802.) And was with tender hands laid to rest in the Newport Cemetery at 3 o'clock on the evening of the 15, May 1900. (Hardy West was the Gr-Grandfather of Cleo West Clack, wife of William Baxter Clack - ECS) 15 S. G. Clack & Maggie here for dinner. 17 Commenced sowing millet and peas. 19 Papa took Sallie to Roddy in route (pointing hand) to Harriman Tenn. (Planted Yellow Corn) 21 Papa went to Rockwood. The boys marked my pigs. 22 Baxter commenced fireing Carver's Saw-Mill Engine. Sowed peas in Spring field. 23 A nice, gentle rain is falling at 12' M. 26 Miss Carrie E. Morris of Knoxville is visiting us. Boid Dannel left here for home at 10:30 a.m. Bettie & Miss Morris visited Miss Carrie Wilson this evening. 28 Eclips of Sun 7 o'clock a.m. 29 Papa went to Rockwood. 30 Mama & Aunt Amy visited Mrs. Narimores. 31 Miss Carrie E. Morris left us for her home in Knoxville Tenn. June 1, 1900 Had a nice rain last night. 2 A.J. Talent, Senses taker here for dinner. 3 Mack attended Church at Whites Creek. 4 Amy went to Dayton enroute to Atlanta Ga. She expects to meet Mrs. Betty Wilson at Dayton Depot in the morning. 6 Planted W. H. Johnson white corn. Papa went to Rockwood. 7 Boid D. worked about 4 hours. 10 Aunt Amy went to S. G. Clack's. 15 Baxter is attending Co. Convention. Commenced cutting wheat on the 13th and finished on the 15th. - 90 Deg. 16 Boid D. went home this morning. Still cloudy & raining. 19 (pointing hand) Mrs. Sirena Naramore Died at 7 o'clock p.m. -Age 74 yrs 8 mo. & 12 days. 20 Papa went to Rockwood. Attended Mrs. Naramore's funeral at Hinds Valley at 4:30 p.m. Papa mailed a $10. Cashier's Check to Amy C- to Atlanta, Ga. 21 Sowed peas by the garden. 23 Mack went to Rhea Springs to mill took about 7 Bux. wheat. Brought home about 280 lbs. flour. Ordered 1 Steriscope by Mr. Jones of Maryville Tenn Price 90 cents to deliver it here in about 20 days. (My uncle,Walter Raleigh Clack, has this Steriscope and the pictures that came with it - ECS) 26 Papa sold 2 pigs to Dannel for Three & 75/100 Dollars. ($3.75)(pointing hand) Adam Kirkland Died 7 o'clock a.m. 27 Papa & Mama went to Rockwood renewed certificates of eposits. 28 Boid sick worked half of the evening. 30 Amy L. C- returned from Atlanta Ga. Aunt Amy returned rom S.G.C-'s. July 3, 1900 Papa went to Rockwood. Boid Dannel went to Grandview in Eve-. Laid by our S. Potatoes. 4 The Texas Frog died. Mack cut oats. 5 Sallie went to Evensville to attend the "County Normal". Stacked our wheat (T.90 degrees/zero). 6 Boid Dannel discharged.- He worked sixty three days - paid him $24.25. 7 1st mess of Rousting ears. 8 Papa & Mama took dinner at Uncle J. Stinecipher's - Light rain fell. 10 Planted late corn. 12 Mr. Jones delivered steriscope, & 13 pictures. Cost $2.90 (Pd. cash 2.40). Dr. J.M. Clack was here yesterday to see Aunt Amy. 13 A heavy rain fell at noon. 15 Rev. J. B. McCallon lodged here last night. 18 Mack went to Rockwood. 19 First melons today. Mack is gone to Evensville this evening. 21 Coopers sale at Roddy. Mack & Sallie returned from Evensville this eve. 22 (pointing hand) Jack Easts child died Age 15 months. Alice Eaves & Hattie Clack arrived here this evening. 23 Papa & Mama attended the funeral of J. East's child, at Glen Alice, Tenn. Mack is gone to Jesse Smith's. Good rain at 11 o'clock a.m. Dr. Murray came to see Aunt Amy on 21st. 25 Mack took Alice & Hattie to the Gipson Spring. Maggie Clack & Sallie Roddy came home with Mack this evening. 27 Mack took Sallie Roddy & Maggie Clack to Roddy. 29 Mrs. Saunders & Mrs. Bowman lodged here last night. Mack took Sallie to Mt. Zion to School. August 1, 1900 Papa went to Rockwood. Mack cut millet grass. 2 Election day. (pointing hand) Mrs. E. C. McCuiston died at 11 o'clock a.m. 3 (pointing hand) Mrs. Emeline Garrison died at 11:30a.m. 5 A. J. Stinecipher & wife here for dinner. 11 Mrs. N. B. Johnson & 5 children arrived here at noon. J. M. Ewing & wife took dinner. 12 Rev. J. B. McCallon here last night. Mrs. Emma Roddy here for dinner. 13 Threshed wheat (31 bushels). 14 Mama & Mrs. Lucy Johnson took dinner at Mr. Ewings. Papa loaned Martha Talent a horse to ride to Ewings. 17 Jesse Stinecipher & Carrie Wilson here for dinner. 18 Two of the Stout children here for dinner. Sold 18 frying chicks to Joseph at 15 cents per head. 19 Mack took Mamia & Bess J- to C. G. Baxter & Mack is covering Phil Gillespie's house. Will Clark is plowing. 24 Papa went to Rockwood for the Associational Minutes. Will Clark quit work. Small pox at Rockwood. 27 Killed 3 hogs net weight 567 lbs - - weight of largest one 280 lbs. net. 28 Aunt Amy returned home from Uncle Spencer's. Rev. Parker is conducting a protracted meeting at Roddy. December 3, 1900 Papa went to Rhea Springs & engaged a beef cow (Frosty) to Chap. Wasson at 2 1/2 cts per lb. 6 Delivered beef cow at Rhea Springs weight 1000 lbs at 2 1/2 = $25.00 7 Book agt. - Paul lodged here last night. Mack & Bettie at meeting at Roddy this morning. Queen Victoria died at 6:15 p.m. at Osborn House, Cowes, Isle of Wight. Dave Robinson died 24th January. 23 Baxter attended the funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey at Shiloh, Mama attended the funeral of Mrs. Sarah Whittenberg at Beans. 27 Raleigh Stout - at home. Clack Roddy Tennessee Kind friend we have just received your most welcome letter all vary glad to here from you one time moore & learn that all was well vary sorrow to here of Mrs. Roddy death this is one of the times that I can fully sympathize with the Roddy family it seemes to me that I have lost more of my own folks than any one thus far it makes my symathy run out afor any one that had to give up any one of thaise family it dose look so hard but still it is right we have had eight days of the worst weather in Texas that I have seen snow & sleet & ice we have had several deeths in the past 10 dayes most all of them from phneumanian and a number of cases still on hand and some of them cannot get well also we have got 1 case of smallpox in town I am glad to say that I think Carrie Roddy will get well now she has been vary low Prof. Roggers of Commanchie that mairried Ellen Johnson is dead they phond me but the weather was so bad we could not go I see that he had taught school thaire for 17 years the prossession was over one mile long six hundred children marched after the corps to his last resting place. Mr. Rogers had done well & had lots of friends and left plenty of land and other means for his family we have just received a letter from one cousin Lucus that lives on grapevine prairie stating that he is vary low with lagrippe asking us to come at once to see him he is 84 years old will try to visit him this week I went to see him three months ago he came here in the early settlement of Texas and has made lots of money he is well fixt & will leave his children plenty this will inform you that all is well I am always vary glad to here from you please write W. Papa gave Bettie, Amy & Sally each a nice heifer calf. 7 Rev. J. P. Sharp lodged here last night. Baxter subscribed for a book. 8 Baxter is gone to work on Shell & Andy Bowles house. Their house was burned about the first of February. 9 Rev. J. B. McCallon here for dinner. Jim McCallon & son, Boliver, came in the evening and staid all night. Mack came home again. 10 Mack returned to school . Sallie went with him, took ten pounds butter $2.00 (pointing hand) Cash paid to W.R. Clack for shingles to cover the church house. By A. C. Ewing $2.00, A. N. Stinecipher 50 cents, E. B. Ewing 50 cents, Jesse Stinecipher 50 cents, D. J. Stinecipher 50 cents, H. J. Stinecipher 50 cents. Total to date $4.50. 3000 shingles cost $6.75. 13 W. Potatoes $9.50 and 11 chicks $1.65 15 Baxter took 8 3/4 bu wheat to Rhea Springs mill & rec'd about 300 lbs flour. 20 Papa had 8 head of cattle dehorned 21 Papa sold "Toney Cow" to J. M. Benson for $20.00 22 Papa took off 13 bus S. Potatoes $9.10, paid E. K. Stout 25 cents for use of wagon. 26 Sent Mack $10 suit by Baxter to Grandview 27 Sent 9 lbs butter to Grandview by E. K. S. Papa paid Sallie $10 balance due on account. March 3, 1901 Papa & Mama took dinner at A. J. Stinecipher's 4 Tempa at noon 70 degrees above zero 6 Temp at 7 a.m. 16 degrees above zero. (pointing hand) Mrs. George Smith died 8 Baxter & Bettie went to Grandview and took 4 lbs butter 9 McCallon & Chastien here 11 Jacob Bowles commenced work at 3 p.m. 12 Papa took 30 lbs honey to Rockwood $3.00 14 Papa took 12 bus S. Potatoes $9.00 Sold Dr. Murray 2 bus peas $2.80. Baxter covered north side of kitchen 15 Rev. John Sharp here in morning (book). Mack came home in the evening. 17 Mack returned, took 3 lbs butter 18 Jim Monday commenced work. Joe East commenced work Feby 28th. 21 Rev. J. R. Smith lodged here last night & Papa ordered 14 apple trees to be delivered next November 20 cents each $2.80 less one night lodging for Smith of 75 cents. His leg was taken off about half way between his knee and hip will be a cripple for life I never have seen any one take it so hard as Maryville did I had to stay with him 12 days and I have to go to see him every week.
